Spontaneous abortion or miscarriage is a very tragic news for the couple especially if they are trying hard for pregnancy. The family is usually devastated and the health care provider must provide support to family so they can cope with the loss. The SPIKES protocol is a tool for helping health care providers counsel patients while breaking bad news.
S - Setting
P - Perspective/Perception
I - Invitation
K - Knowledge
E - Empathy/Emotion
S - Summary/Strategy
Each letter of the SPIKES acronym stands for an action. Each action allows the health care provider to structure the counseling session in a logical and rational method. There is also an element of empathy and validating/recognizing the emotional reaction of the patient.
There are many situations in which such counseling is required. Such situations include gynecological cancer, obstetrical and gynecological complications.
