- Aaaaaaaaand we're back on the Rubber Soul train! Welcome, one and all, as we talk all things (well, many things) Ringo. This is a celebration of a humble but killed drummer, holding space for the talent and egos of his stellar bandmates.
In this episode: virtual guests, and a fart story (because what in life isn't best improved with a good fart story?)
Special thanks this week to @TheArtofGuitar for letting me share some of their video, and to esteemed Elementary Penguins drummer Ollie for weighing in! Thank you very much for your combined four cents.
A closing note: it would appear that my camera-focus celebrations were a little premature last week - it seems to like me best when I am stationary, which...I never really am. I'll keep working on it.
For those of you with a burning desire to generally support what I do, I'm here to help you along in that journey: www.buymeacoffee.com/fathommu... (but no pressure, friends☺️)
Happy Friday, folks!

Thanks for your sharing your attention with me. :)
Love your passion for The Lads! Thanks for including me. :)
You made an excellent video!
Thanks for sharing your story with everyone!
One of my favourites on the album!
Ringo's drumming in this is just so good.
"Ringo is the best Beatles. Or certainly one of the top 4"
Please have this guy again 😂
john’s guitar part-the choppy one-is my favorite part of the song! i think it’s BRILLIANT.
Love that you chose to dive into this song, Nancy. I don't think I've ever seen anyone else focus on this one.
I agree with you that "What Goes On" is the weakest track on the "Rubber Soul" album. I see it as the weakest side opening track on any of their 12 classic albums.
(2:30) "Sounds like there's this a sort of... cranky gremlin kinda grunting in the background of the track". Now that's a quote.
(4:05) Loved your take on that line ("Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die?"). Yes... soooo incredibly melodramatic.
Loved the segment about Ringo's drumming. Anyone who puts down Ringo's drumming - is a lost cause (like the weirdos that believe Paul died in 1966).
Ringo was the perfect drummer for this group. There are dozens of great drummers who agree.
Love Ollie's contribution ("the way he plays it is super consistent".) This made me think of an interview I saw where Ringo was saying someone once asked him if he wanted a "click track" for some song he was working on... and Ringo's reply was: "I AM the f----ing click track".
I also agree with Ollie... that Ringo "is certainly one of the top 4 Beatles".
Also agree with you comment on the "clashing and resolving harmony at the end of the chorus".
Also love the way you use your hands to help explain Paul's walking bass lines (11:54).
Btw.... I'll own up to it. That was my fart.
Nancy - Looks like you are trying to start a "Ringo is dead" rumor in your video description ("This is a celebration of a humble but KILLED drummer").
You might want to fix that typo (from "killed" to "skilled".).
🤣 you're right! I did mean "skilled"!
7:20 I've seen that video! 😂
Of course this is quick filler, you're completely right. Still fun to hear George's rockabilly licks for a final time, and the harmonies are excellent as always.
I can agree with your comments about this song to an extent, but I still always enjoy it every time I listen to the album. It’s a great vehicle for Ringo, it demonstrates a wide range of styles the Beatles could cover, and it’s a true toe tapper. Most of all, while it’s true they recycled formerly rejected material and slapped it together at a late hour to fill space on an album facing a deadline, it’s still a good song. It shows that even the Beatle’s lesser, even least stuff is still better than many, many bands better stuff.
Thanks for the Ringo love. He’s such a cool dude.
Maybe I’m a contrarian, but as for the out of time, sparse guitar bits in ‘what goes on’ I like them. They give the song an edgey/punky flavor that helps take off some of the buttoned-up, pop sheen that Martin and McCartney seemed to lean in to at times.
Same, I love this song...
Haha - would that make John your favourite? He seemed to be partial to the slightly gritty.
@@fathommusicnz John is the most interesting to me, for sure. Have you ever seen the documentary The United States versus John Lennon?
@@edvonblue I haven't, but I am aware of it - is it a worthwhile watch?
@@fathommusicnz I really liked it. I like American history a lot - especially the 70s. That was a really interesting time to me.
Interesting to hear another person's perspective... I've always loved the songs, it's one of my favourites.
The song was kinda rushed and done in one take, and I personally really love it.
I love the whole album and I couldn't pick a least favourite... but if I really had to... maybe "The word"
It's not as strong as the rest of the album in my opinion...
Either way, masterpiece album.
I think it's a sign of just how solid their songwriting was that one person's least favourite on a Beatles album is sure to br on another's best-of list. I'm glad to hear there are people out there who really adore "What Goes On".
What go’s on demo rhythm is a little like I’ll Cry Instead
Yes! I thought so too, but ultimately decided to leave it out of the video, because I didn't think anyone else would find it interesting. I'm glad someone else noticed too!
great video as always!
always felt like this was like The Beatles’ equivalent of Let It Be by The Replacements; a transitional album between two significant halves of a legendary band’s career
That's a really interesting analogy that I haven't heard before! I like it.
I'll 'listen' sometimes, though I don't skip (that's a nono on Beatles albums). I don't know that demo, but it sounds more authentic and I liked the fuller sound on the rhythm guitar. Think I prefer Act Naturally. Some have this album as their fav and yet it's got this (sometimes I... oops already said) and Run for Your Life.
Run for Your Life is the big problem on RS. Got into a debate before about this one. I'll maybe save that for when you get there: it's gonna be interesting when you do?! I'm not devaluing Rubber Soul, it's brilliant.
Haha, yes, part of me is dreading that one, because I briefly mentioned it in a previous video and someone went off at me a bit. The comment section on the "Run For Your Life" episode may be a bit of a minefield...
I hadn't heard that demo before I recorded this episode either, and I really liked it!
Where in the world are situated, fathom? It's only Thursday where I live 🙂
My two least favourite tracks on the album are "What goes on" and "Think for yourself".
Cool guest appearance from ollie!
New Zealand! We're one of the first to see the sunrise. 😀
@@fathommusicnzthat explains it 😎
I agree with your view of "What Goes On"... but I really loke George's "Think For Yourself". I think it's his best song through 1965.
Yes, What goes on is by far my least song on this great album! And yes Ringo is a great drummer!
You made my least fav song on RubberSoul VERY fun Fathom! Thanx again.
Nice comment. I so agree with it.
What Goes On would have been more suited for Beatles for Sale album.
Spot on!
Thanks, I would also conclude Run for Your Life would have been better on Beatles for Sale as well. :)
I love this song but it is my least favorite.
A testament to the overall quality of their work, eh?
and i dislike the same song you dislike, i just don't have all your good reasons, lol.
My least favorite track on the album would have to be Michelle. Highschool wannabe poet lyrics, soupy melody. Not grounded in anything. Not my cup o' tea.
