    This is how you know Homelessness isn't a real problem: There are no Rich homeless people. Capitalism has created homelessness. There are plenty of places for people to live. If anyone with money needed a place to live, they would be able to find one. But homeless people are poor, so they can't afford housing. So the problem isn't real in the same sense as a power outage, or something like that. Homeless people could be housed and fed, without a doubt. Our way of life just doesn't support them, because they are so disadvantaged that they can't function successfully as they are expected too. Regardless of the reasons for why a person is homeless, there is still plenty of places for them to live, which is why I consider it a manufactured problem. Its sort of like reducing the supply for a product to inflate its value, a manufactured or manipulated way to increase its value.

    • @sdrfz

      It's not Capitalism that's the problem. We could house homeless people in these cheap temporary structures all over Austin, but NIMBY prevents it.

    • @rkm23456
      @rkm23456 Před 3 lety +1

      @@sdrfz Well, if housing didn't require some sort of rent or mortgage, then all people would be able to find housing. If housing is available, but the cost prevents people from living in it, money is the problem. Homelessness is basically the best example of how easily capitalism can fail to meet the needs of society.
      Most of the homeless housing projects are an eyesore, and I wouldn't want hobo camps in my backyard either. Just give them regular housing, like apartments.

    • @sdrfz
      @sdrfz Před 3 lety

      @@rkm23456 You just helped confirm that NIMBY is the main obstacle to putting the homeless into these temporary structures. You should not need nice apartments to place people. Those temporary homes cost about 20 times less per person than the hotels that the City is purchasing for the homeless. The City budget can easily handle that.

      I just pulled a volunteer stint at a homeless shelter. I'm 64 and everyone I worked with was my age or older. One woman had Parkinson's. Another had left a wife-beating husband -- every day she walks past the house she raised her children in. One man was a disabled veteran. Another was in a wheelchair. These people worked for years but they are not employable now. And with a studio apartment at $1500 in this town, they need almost $5,000 in deposit and first and last just to move in, nevermind deposits for utilities and etc. etc. Even if they could save this much, their social security or disability won't house AND feed AND buy them the meds they need every month. One thing they do have -- they're KIND to one-another. Which is more than you have, Sir. Kindness.

Also the cost of housing, wage stagnation for decades, and increase in general cost of goods also plays a role here. Some of this requires investing tax payer dollars to fix.
