- Here's an NBC News Special Report on the death of former Vice President and New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller as aired on WMAQ Channel 5. The bulletin came at the end of a commercial break and interrupted an edition of The Midnight Special which featured The Village People amongst the musical guests. I left some of the song in at the end for fun. Includes:
Tail end of commercial for Tickle anti-perspirant for women - "You'll Love The Way It Works" - (C) Bristol-Myers Company 1978
NBC News Special Report on death of Nelson Rockefeller from an apparent heart attack; as noted by his press spokesman Hugh Morrow, he had died at his Rockefeller Center office around midnight (New York time) (voiceover by Bill Rippe)
Returning to The Midnight Special, already in progress, with The Village People midway through their big hit "Macho Man"
This aired on local Chicago TV early Saturday, January 27th 1979 at about 12:17am.

“Former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller is dead. And now....THE VILLAGE PEOPLE!”
This was what Nelson and his young lady friend were grooving to when he died.
What a weird transition
So it's like when BBC Radio announced Prince Phillips death then went to rave music but 50 years prior.
How ironic!
It is apt that they announce Nelson Rockefeller's passing & they go back to the "Midnight Special " with the Village People singing "Macho Man", sort of cosmic gallows humor. 😂
And the name of and shape of the deodorant packaging also gives that strong '70s sexual vibe.
It tickled me and I don't mean the deodorant stick.
Rockefeller’s Law - Never be caught doing what you wouldn’t be caught dead doing.
Nothing like some hot disco action to help recover from the sudden bummer of hearing some bad news.
Incredibly sexually suggestive deodorant ad. Nelson Rockefeller is dead. The VILLAGE PEOPLE. The 70s were awesome.
that was deodorant?!
That's so sweet they deidicated Macho Man to ol' Nelson the "Rock".
He didn’t actually die at Rockefeller center. He died at his townhouse at 13 West 54th Street. He was with a 25 year old female aide.
Yep and he was 71.
@@muffs55mercury61 he was 70
They never knew this at the time
He was 69 at the time
Now THAT was an AWESOME clip! Love the late 70s music and was a big fan of musicians who played for the Village People
More Village People!! P.S. At least JFKs special report was followed by an instant coffee commercial
How did NBC's special report on LBJ's death end with some aspirin commercial?
When I finally pass on, which, hopefully, will be in the far distant future, I hope after the announcement somebody'll cut straight to the Village People for me so everyone will feel better.
Amazing how news coverage has changed. Nowadays they'd have brought on 27 pundits.
The 24-hour newscycle was a few years away. Networks (unless they had a special like an election) did not keep on-air newspeople in the studio all the time. It was the in-house announcer who usually had to do special reports after 11 p.m. unless it was something major and then they would call in the flagship station anchor to fill time before the main guy gets in.
Gary Rasberry Jr. thanks for the information! That’s really interesting!
The irony of both the commercial and the song given the way Rockefeller (allegedly) died
Ladies and gentlemen: The 70s!
List of Nelson Rockerfeller accomplishments as Vice President of the United States:
--He was appointed, not elected.
--People already thought he was dead or forgot that he existed.
--Popularized the catchphrase: Who is he again?
Thank you and God Speed.
Nelson Rockefeller, 1908-1979
Governor of New York, 1959-1973
U.S. Vice President, 1974-1977
His grandfather once the richest American.
The deodorant and the song all seem to fit the occasion.
LOL. Was only 6 years old in 1979, thus way past my bedtime lol. Now when a former American VP dies it's the lead story on the cable news channels for hours. Funny how in 1979, the VP/Governor Rockfeller death announcement comes on around 1245am-1am in the morning with a brief 1 minute bulletin.
And to George Master. "The Midnight Special" was a 1970's era "Live concert" series that came on every Friday Night right after the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson around 1230am. *ET/PT* The Midnight Special was an early version of MTV's "Unplugged" series of the 1990's and early 2000's.
Going from reporting Nelson Rockefeller's death to the Village People. You can't make this shit up.
LOL!!!
After a deodorant commerical in which the packaging and name was....ummm.....
He ain't that important despite that the highest office he reached it was vice president of the United States to Gerald Ford
VP Number 41 was "getting it on" with his secretary in Rockefeller Center (home of NBC News and the 30 Rock studios) and ends up croaking over, while trying to prove to the world that he was a free-wheeling "Macho Man". Years ago, especially in the late '90s, early 2000s, this would have been excellent late night material for Leno and Letterman.
Whatever happened to Megan Marshack--the "secretary"?
Posting at 6:19 pm ET September 1, 2020. Seeing the Tickle spot at the beginning brought back a long-forgotten memory.
Who is that actress on the ad before the bulletin? she looks so familiar to me. :)
I would think network flagship WNBC-TV New York might not have returned to "Midnight Special", but may have had additional locally-produced coverage, given that Mr. Rockefeller was from New York State..
It was like midnight everybody went home from wnbc probably or to a bar cause it was the weekend lol
1:23 - brother was getting it!!🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿
70 YO Nelson Rockefeller died doing what he loved .... with his biographer, Miss Mershack
What's with Macho Man after the NBC News?
In those days, there was a late night show called "The Midnight Special" that aired on NBC after Johnny Carson. The NBC logo seen there was the "Trapezoid N" logo used from 1976 until 1979 when it was replace with the "Proud N" logo that has the familiar NBC Peacock superimposed over the "Trapezoid N". (Something I wish that Comcast would bring back.) Thus the NBC News Special Report was broadcasted after 12:35 am. But that's the 1970s for you: a deodorant commerical in which the product resembles a sex toy with a suggestive-sounding name, the report of the death of the 41st Vice President of the United States (who was rumored to die while "getting it on" with a young secretary or aide in his office in Rockefeller Center - the HQ of NBC and the 30 Rock studios), followed by The Village People on The Midnight Special singing "Macho Man".
@@rwboa22 it was true
Sad thing is,I remember this...does that mean im getting old?
After he died "Tickling" his then-25-year old aide.
Same here.
Geez, only thing missing is Chevy Chase announcing it like he did with Franco!
Was With Another Woman When He Died!
Ohmigoodness...reading some of these comments, the Tickle ad, the Village People *immediately* after Nelson Rockefeller's death announcement sent me into a laughing jag that went on for minutes on end. Tears down the cheeks...some of you people oughta be comedy writers, you missed your calling. Damn!
Johnny Carson did get a few laughs everytime he brought up Rockefeller's young female aide.
LMFAO
If the local time is correct according to the description, the brief need bulletin occured at 12:17 AM CT, which would make 1:17 AM ET. When did "The Midnight Special" aired in 1979 during its time slot?
Also, as a CZcams viewer noted, in New York City, was "The Midnight Special" completely preempted due to Rockefeller's death? Also, in the days before cartoons gave way to weekend newscasts, did NBC (and/or WNBC-TV, the flagship in New York City) devote any coverage to the former Vice President's death? [Thanks for the correction. That's my age (or lack it) showing.]
Midnight Hour? You mean The Midnight Special?
The Midnight Special aired Friday night immediately following The Tonight Show at 1:00 Eastern, Midnight Central.
Bill Rippe (who was on duty at the NBC announcing booth this late night/early morning) would have led off with Rockefeller's death on the sign-off newscast (or, as he would have put it, "a report of late news, sports and weather from 'NewsCenter4' "). What would have aired after "The Midnight Special" on WNBC, would it have been "Marcus Welby, M.D." or some other old filmed TV show? Whatever it was, Rippe would have read the news over slides after that.
Now this is where I believe they renamed that legendary area in New York City. Rockefeller Center/Rockefeller Plaza.
I can't stop watching this for some reason 😂 the audacity of it all is perfect! I hope when our modern-day
"president" is no longer here, please let it be aired just like this 🤞🏾
Well considering they started singing "YMCA" at all of the later rallies...
Imagine if they announced Sleepy Joe’s death in a news bulletin like this, then cut back to a scene of someone suffering from dementia. Not gonna lie, I would be laughing for minutes on end. 😂
Did NBC ever interrupt Saturday Night Live with a special bulletin? If so, did they have to say this is a real special report and not a paordy?
The Bill Murray episode from December 1981 was interrupted by a special bulletin about Poland declaring martial law.
I understand that the last photo of Vice President Nelson Rockefeller was taken when he died on top of his mistress. Rockefeller's wife who went by the first name Happy changed her name shortly after that.
Should have changed her first name from happy Rockefeller to sad Rockefeller
What happens to Megan Marshack?
+Jason Bertalotto She later married and moved to California.
She got F'd and spent an hour putting Rocky Felther's clothes back on him before reporting his heart attack.
Megan Marshack looked unbelievably hot
Wow how ironic former Vice President Rockefeller then Macho Man song by the Village People's!
That TICKLE deodorant looks like a _________.
Audrey Jefferson no duh
It looks like Nelson Rockefeller’s throbbing member when he died
There used to be on CZcams a video clip of ten minutes or so of Rocky's death. It was I believe a local broadcast.
Who's the girl in the commercial
One of thousands of actresses who got a commercial and was never heard from again.
That was Veronica Hamel who became a star in acclaimed TV series, Hill Street Blues
@@davidgibson7615 Wow you are correct!
Wonder if he's enjoying hell.
.... Well, certainly not “you can sail the seven seas” ... we don’t want to disclose the site of burial...
Rocky died trying to be a macho man...
I had little sympathy at the time. He came from the wealthiest family in the country and never had to struggle like ordinary Americans did. His biggest failure was his War On Drugs which only led to mass incarceration but never stemmed the flow of drugs very much, if at all. People with simple possession of pot often spent five years or more in prison at taxpayers expense.
now weeds be legals
What the hell was Tickle?
Vib.....Never mind
Maa-cho maa-cho maaaaan...
What a both funky and sexual way to die!
Had he lived. He probably would of been candidate in 1980.
At least he went out with a bang
He retired from politics just before the 1976 election
I doubt unless he challenged Carter for the democratic nomination that’s the only way I could have seen it. Rocky was no fool he knew his kind of republican who are just slightly softer democrats was a dying breed and there was no place in the federal party for him. If he did Reagan would have whooped his ass in the primaries. Nelson last chance of being president was and even this is kind of far fetched given how popular Johnson was at the time was in 1964.
0:04 The woke crowd would NEVER allow a product like this to make it today....
The conservatives would NEVER have a divorced New Yorker with a history of womanizing as the GOP nominee today...
@@stephengalvacky5259 They also wouldn't introduce their anti-LGBT nominees with songs from musical groups like the one here either.
@@MrMatteNWkActually, Trump supported gay marriage long before Biden ever did, and I’m not even a fan of the guy.
