- Nelson Rockefeller was governor of New York State, Vice President of the United States, and made several runs for the Presidency, but he never slowed down when it came to his parallel life as a patron of the arts. Together with his wife Happy, he wanted to explore the many ways that materials could be shaped and reshaped to make new works of art. The couple’s vision and curiosity brought them directly to artist’s studios, and they developed close relationships with a number of artists in their collection, including Joan Miró, Jean Dubuffet and Fernand Léger. This fall, Sotheby’s is proud to offer the Rockefeller’s most treasured pieces in a dedicated auction of 25 lots. Discover how the couple seamlessly blended fine art with important design, as consoles and table lamps by Albert Giacometti stood side by side with elegant murals from masters like Henri Matisse. Oh how I remember flying a helicopter with state officials along with the governor of NYS. New York was facing a financial crisis. Nelson was so very nice and gracious to me and my crew member. He assigned a wonderful lady to tour the estate. She mentioned Happy's love of modern art and the statues on the grounds reflected that.
At that time the famous tea house was started or about to be. Everything to build the tea house was imported from Asia along with the workers who stayed until completion.
We viewed many water colors and things his lost son Michael had made before he was never seen again while on an expedition to New Guinea.
We then were brought to the grotto that stored amazing things. I don't remember the full detail, but there was a car, I think was copper, but it was formed, if I remember correctly a person.
We went to his fathers golf quarters. I was told that to this day everything was put out and ready for his father to golf and returned to his closet for the next day.
It was an amazing day to see things and listen to stories that no one had seen or heard up until then.
Happy was a dude.
