i got my budgie a week ago. i bought him from a local pet store. i was told he was there for quite some time and was there for longer than all the others, so i bought him. he seemed kinda sad and quiet when i first got him. now, he is happy and loves to fly around, sing and play. his name is nugget

My local pet store just told me my budgies were too young to figure out there gender..
@RedGaming Studio Not all some are actually good for the animals I have one pet store and sometimes my mom gets birds from there i know the owner a little he is really nice to everyone and all the animals i also buy the food for my birds and dog there
@RedGaming Studio he also gives them water change 2x/day and he cleans the cages alot (But the best part is he likes cleaning the cages and giving them food because thats what makes him happy!)
Budgies are not sold in pet stores in my country, nor any other birds. They do sell the supplies tho. This meant I had to find my budgies at a breeder and they're usually very supportive and nice. The good news about that, is that the budgies are sold at a low price everywhere, but the bad news is, that the lower the birds are sold for, the easier it feels for someone, like parents, to get rid of them, if they bought it for their child, that now have no interest in them. I see too many post about 2-3 year old budgies trying to be sold because of the owners getting bored of them. God I hate when people consider pets as materials.

I worked for a little pet store up until recently. We ordered 50 budgies at a time, separated them between our three stores, and kept them for sale until they all sold. Some were there so long that they went into breeding condition but they found a home still. We got sick budgies in every now and again and tried really hard to nurse them back to health.

@@maniacram Our culture isn't used to people doing the right thing anymore. I work retail and people are so shocked that I'm genuinely nice and actually there to help them.
If it means anything, I did bring home a baby budgie that had a broken leg that the manager was going to put in a plastic bag and tie it shut, then put it in the freezer to kill her. She's what got me back into budgies and I made a tiny splint for her with a qtip and medical tape, then she healed up 2 weeks later. I was not about to let him kill her for something that could be fixed, especially in such an inhumane way. Her name is Kiwi and I would do anything for that bird. I got two friends for her a month later.
They do not care at all. I used to work in a petshop and the owner of the petshop didn't wanted even to clean the cages properly or feed them any fruits or veggies because they are "expensive and make a lot of mess". At the petshop I used to work they didn't even send the sick budgies back to breeder or any vet. They just took those budgies in the deposit in very small cages and let them die there without any water changed daily. After those poor souls die, they throw them in the trash. I couldn't work there more than a month, but I tried at least to give those poor animals a better life. I taught the new employees to change their water 2 times a day at least.
Wow, That's sad. At least where I live, the pet stores actually care and take care of the birds. They have fruits and veggies in their cage at least twice a week, they have a calcium block in the cage along with toys, the sick birds are put into a separate cage in the back (that has food water and toys) and the cages where the birds are normally kept are massive.

Same. The pet store I used to work at didn't care at all either. We cleaned the cages once a week, And got them fresh water and food, but the cages weren't very big. And they held about 10 birds each. There where no toys, and just one stick that all the Birds just sat on, all day, every day, for months until they either got sold or died.. A really sad existence tbh. I felt so bad for them.

I currently work at a small local pet store! We keep all of our budgies until they’re sold, and if one gets injured or sick, our back room serves as our animal hospital where we have spare cages for any kind of animal, and it’s not uncommon for one of us to take home an injured animal as well since we can’t sell them. We strive for proper pet care!

I actually bought two budgies less than a week ago.. the owner advised me against one of them, when I asked him if she has any health problems he went on to say that he didn't like her head patterns and she had too many dark spots that make her ugly.. I was infuriated because I fell in love with her the moment I saw her, i felt so protective over her and became even more adamant on taking her home after that because I knew she won't be sold,and I didn't know what would her destiny be.. now I'm just hoping to become a good parent to them, I'm totally new to this

Ok I do agree with you about giving the budgies a better life but if you do buy them all then that's basically telling the company to keep breeding more birds so that they could get sold. I guess the only way to actually stop these cruel animal business is to start boycotting them untill something happens. It's sad that pet stores don't have a more humane way to sell animals.

When I brought my 2 cockatiels over 30 years ago, I went into the pet shop and there were only 2 there, a scabby(that is an English saying for ugly looking) , manky bald female, and male. But the shop owner said I could not just buy one I must buy them as a pair. Well I got them, named them Bonnie an Clyde, but all the 20 years I had Bonnie, she never got rid of her baldness, and always looked a funny bleeder. Clyde only lived 12 years, but when he died, I got Bonnie a new companion, only a few months old, Mitch, he will be 22 this year.
Tip: Budgies love night lights. I keep my 14 budgies in my spare bedroom with many natural branches set up around the room. I never keep them totally in a dark room as they get night fright. After Xmas, strings of small tree lights are greatly reduced in price. Set up around your budgie room (low down) serves the purpose of soft low light for budgies as well as work as a great night light through the open screened budgie room door.
Budgies that don't get sold at my petsmart go in my house. Let's just say a flock of 14 birds is chaotic

We have a cage that is 6 foot long and 10 foot in length. We also put alot of natural branches straight from trees and wraped moneyplants around it.The country I live in doesn't sell any bird toys at all so I created different toys for my birds. We tried our best to give them the most natural environment we could.It is really nice to see my birds all happy and active
This made me so sad ! 😭 I found my parakeet in my front yard. She literally just walked into my home and heart. 💕 It is rough to imagine what she could have been through.
When I wanted to get my budgies. I first went to a pet store. I went to 2 different stores multiple times and all budgies where (luckily) sold.

I got my 2 budgies from a man who kept birds as a hobby of some sorts and he’d sometimes let them breed. A lot of the budgies there were birds that didn’t get sold. It was nice to see that he kept those too and all of the budgies were very tame. Sadly, bird stores don’t know how to handle birds at all. I went out to buy bird toys once and some lady chased a budgie down with a net.. It was clear that it wasn’t used to hand contact at all and it looked frightened! Pet stores should stop selling animals and inadequate cages, as it just leads to people being misinformed and pets being unhappy.

I bought my budgie from a wonderful breeder that hand reared all of his birds and the ones that were born blind even though he breeds show budgies he looked after well.

My late grandma raised budgies. She had a tiny little handmade sign in her flower bed that read "baby budgies 4 sale" but I don't think she was a motivated seller. She turned my dads old room into an aviary. She also screened in the front porch for her birds.
Whenever I buy a budgie, I always try to pick the one that's sitting by himself. I don't like separating two budgies that clearly like each other, and I feel that the lonely budgie will at least get a new friend with the other budgie I have back home.
Both of my budgies died last year, but they died several months apart. Since I hate the idea of having one budgie sitting by himself, all lonesome, I got two new budgies. Both of whom were sitting by themselves in the pet store, and both of whom seem to really like each other now. They just can't leave one another alone.

Thank you for this video. Budgies are so overlooked and treated like objects becayse if their size a lot. I have 6 Budgies, a Macaw and a dog and rhw budgies are super fun. We don't have shelters in my country or I'd adopt but I've rescued budgies no one wanted and returned because 'they weren't social enough' I'm happy to see someone who sees how amazing they are.
When i got my budgie, Archi, my heart told me to change his water. When I opened the tiny glass his water is kept, the water was dirty, slimy and awful. The seller even told us that he is a baby, Who just learned to eat. I know that there could be situations even worse than this, but honestly, no bird, animal, NO ONE should be mistreated!

Here in the Philippines, budgies are sold a lot and at cheap prices. We don't care about the age at all. Because every bird can be tamed with enough time, bonding, love, and care❤️

My mom owns a pet store that's locally owned here in town and she keeps all of the budgies until they are sold and some of them may never be sold so she just provides what they need and tries to allow them to live their fullest life

Unfortunately buying from these bad pet shops just encourages them to keep doing it. Better to buy from a reputable shop, or a small breeder who treats the birds well. Let these bad petshops go out of business.
Yes! Some of us should create a bird rescue that raises money for the supplies budgies need in a pet store and a person should work there that supports it so that way we know the money is being handled correctly
I bought a budgie 7 months ago, cause I thought my other budgie felt lonely. The fact is I don't know its age. When I got it, its beek already said it's a female. She was alone in the cage, talking to no other budgies like all her friends were sold. I think she was here for a long time.
This is something I’ve thought about a lot, that’s so sad to think about. Poor babies, I wish they wouldn’t treat them and many other animals as if they were just a product to be sold. They’re living things, they don’t want to live in a box all their lives :(

I have a cute budgie named Kira I didn’t get her at a pet store but a biker who was friends with our neighbor found her on the sidewalk. She looked really beat up especially on her beak. He put her in a box and gave it to our neighbor who eventually gave her to us.

At a pet store I was at, there were a lot of parrots, and only 2 Budgies in one cage. Me and my family were only planning to get ONE for me, but we saw both of them scritching eachother and chriping to the other one in joy, we got so sad of making their friendship break apart that we got the 2 of them. Now, if everyone in the house is gone they can keep eachother company! They are so happy together and i've never seen them sad before. Im proud of these guys.
My first little boy was adopted, but he was only a single bird. I decided to get another budgie, but I did my research and went to a breeder. Spent ages talking to her, learning the history of every bird, seeing how she interacted with them before deciding to buy from her.
I would love to be able to adopt one of the “useless” budgies to help them. I already have two little brats who they could befriend. Hehe.
This is sad for some situations but their is hope for them! I hope any neglected birds have some type of love someday!
I got my budgies from a pet store and they take really good care of their budgies, they have a pretty large open space and have toys to play with, I love my budgies with all my heart and I hope you love them too!

When I went to travelling in other countries, I like to visit pets stores, especially to see budgies. In many shops, they placed food and water dishes right below the sticks birds standing. It can be seen clearly birds drops are in the water dishes. Every time, I went to talk to shop assistants, show her or him the problem that birds would get sick or die if they eat or drink dirty food or water, I advised them to place these dishes in different places so birds drops would not directly drop into dishes. I hope more people can do this when see this kind of problem.

I have a budgie at the moment, I never thought of buying a bird now. But I went to the pet store and saw this budgie with a bald spot trembling, I bought him, he looks better now
We mostly bought our budgies from the pet store, except for two. One we actually adopted because he was listed on a pet adoption site back in early 2007 and ended up outliving many of his store-bought buddies. The partner he had before passing away was bought back in 2013; after mid-to-late 2019 when the adopted one passed away, we ended up finding another budgie listed from an adoption site who is now my current store-bought budgie's partner. I personally plan to adopt if getting any more in the future.
If you feed a sick budgie to a snake doesn't that make the snake sick too....

We bought like 60 of those birds in the stores in the very past. Wesold them all and kept 1 of them. He's tamed and was born here and still lives a happy life 10 years later.
When I was a kid I was given a senior budgie because the owners couldn't care for them anymore (they were elderly and going to a nursing home). I kept the bird until he passed. I wanted another bit never had a job. But when I got my first job I went to a local petshop to buy one budgie. However, when I got there, there were only two and I didn't just want to leave one behind so I took them both. Now they are thriving.

true story. my first budgie, Asher, was gotten from Petco. His wings were clipped from an extremely young age, and they never grew back as he got older. unfortunately, he passed away from illness. My next budgie, Odin, has extreme anxiety. Whenever I adopted him, the woman warned me that he was from a very bad household and to be patient with him. I have had him for at least 4 months. He doesnt bite as much as he used to, but he is still terrified of people. Goes to show you how much budgies can remember. especially with trauma

The employees in the pet shop i saw were really good at taking care of them, the budgies have fruits and veggies in their cage, they're fully tamed and they even bonded with the employees. Even though they're tamed, they still sell it at the same price like the other stores. They said when they have free time they always approach to the budgies just to play/talk to them. But when a budgie is at age of 6 months, they breed it to find a mate and live a normal life in a aviary for budgies.

My bird was from a store cause I live in a very small town and there are no local breeders that aren't 4+ hours away. I chose the oldest and his name is Dove(he's gray and I was young and unoriginal) he is super skittish and I've never been able to hand tame him even tho I spend every day next to his cage holding millet? He eats the millet but won't step onto my hand. I think he may be too old to get over his fear of people from the pet store? If anyone else knows about this behavior in their birds drop me a comment? I've had him for about 2 and a half years and love him dearly

I got my budgie almost 2 years ago her name is Mai she originally belonged to my step brother who bought her from my dad,my step brother also bought another budgie from my dad but he kept them in a small cage and in his room which was freezing cold so one of the other one sadly died,and after weeks of my step brother not taking care of Mai I just straight up took her cage and brought her to my room and she has been under my care ever since,I got her a new cage and let her out everyday,I love her I don’t know what I would do without her and my older sister has a sun conure Mango he’s such a jerk but I love him too
Also same thing happened with my hamster but he belonged to my step sister not my step brother and my step sister didn’t have a another hamster it was just Chewy(my hamster) his cage was so stupidly tiny and she didn’t even feed,give him water or clean his cage because she “didn’t want to care of him” her words not mine,so she just let me have him so yeah I got him a new cage and ect and in conclusion..my step siblings should never have animals that aren’t dogs

I got my cockatiel from a pet store, and my sister got her youngest budgie from another pet store. She got her older one from a breeder. All of them are wonderful birds and have been taken good care of by the places we got them from.

It's not easy to teach them to talk but I heard that to teach them to talk you need to repeat the same word over and over until they can said it
I've got my budgie for 5 months now and now he mimics the sound of kissing and his name kiwi. All I did is to repeat his name every day at least for 10 minutes or when I'm playing with him. Also when you're talking with them and they repeat it give them a treat even if they just piped they tried at least
Even if the pet store takes good care I would still suggest getting them directly from the breeder.
The thing with the pet store is just that during every sale, the whole flock gets spooked when they have to catch one out. So they are always super shy.
I bred budgies until I finished university and left my parents' home.
I vetted everyone who bought a pet bird and made sure they would be good owners.
Any bird that didn't sell and wasn't suitable for breeding due to quality or old age, I donated to the aviary in the local park where there was a flock.
I used to go down and visit them and check they were OK.

For me, I went to the shop to buy budgies and I saw this person who was holding a budgie sooo hard and the budgie he was holding looked like it was gonna DIE so we bought it and turns out, the budgie we bought is super friendly! Her name is sunshine
i have 4 budgies my self and watching those birds that didnt get sold and were neglected truly broke my heart, i couldnt imagine that happening to my lil birds, luckily i take great care of them

I’m getting a budgie on Saturday, Sunday, or next week, and I have wanted a bird ever since I knew that you can get one from a pet store/breeder and my dad got rid of my ducks that I had and didn’t let me say goodbye and doesn’t want me to get a bird, but I have my own money and i have all the support from the rest of my family. My aunt owns MANY birds and has had budgies in the past... she now only has finches but she is full of advice and goodies for my soon to be, friend. And I have been binge watching your videos for 3 days straight. And I want to say thank you for handing this information out!!
I got my budgie from a local pet store, the owner is super sweet and even gave me a great budgie cage for free, the one mistake I did was not get another budgie, lets just say, my budgie is getting a friend soon. 💜

They don't clip their nails,give them a cuddle bone,toys,food or water,the parakeet beaks are broken and overgrown,their are dead ones , there is no source of air,and to top it off they put like 23 budgies in the smallest space

Thanks for bringing up this topic. It’s sounds like an awful fate for the unwanted budgies. Also, that pet store you show, should have wide ladder like structures on a slant across from each other. With the odd ladder rung being of a different texture. That way the budgies have many choices where to sit. Up or down, also they can fly/hop across from one ladder to the other. If you know the owner well, perhaps you can make, something like that for the owner to try. That would show the owner cares for the birds enrichment.
That's a thought I think I tried to bury for a long time. Glad you brought it back out - I love all birds and because I do, I no longer keep them as pets.

There arent much places that sell birds but there are good amounts of breeders where i live
Love buying petshop budgies and also unwanted pets, i bring them home and they live in my huge aviary with natural tree branches and rope swings, the change you see in them after a few weeks is astounding.
I have 10 budgies and some of them are from a breeder, who really cares about his budgies.And some of them I adopt from relatives and friends, who don't wanted them anymore :/
I'm so happy with my little budgies (and a very old red crowned parakeet, who gets hopefully a friend soon) and would do literally everything for them.
I just love my birds :3
2:10 oh my god, hopefully they don’t feed budgies to ball pythons (which is the kind of snake that he put on the screen) ball pythons should be fed a diet of strictly rodents. I have a ball python myself, and I feed him mice. I would NEVER recommend feeding birds to a ball python.

The one where I'm getting my burd has them there for ages they feed them give them toys and a giant cage they live there their whole life till there baought it awesome because it's a family store and the worker kicks anyone out who does any thing to stress the birds I love them

I ones bought a zebrafinch from a pet store. She looked sick for a few months and had problems socialising with my other zebra finches. I really thought that she's gonna die soon.
But now (3 years later) she's doing so great. She looks healthy and is really good friends with two brothers. But still the beginning was really hard for her. :(
Yes this is very true I know this Chinese men who have budgies cockatiels ringnecks and love birds and they are in terrible conditions very dirty cages their feathers are terribly messed up in their beaks are filled with nasty things on them and I remember three years ago I brought three budgies and when I got three of them they were happy and healthy with me I give them fresh food water toys everything they could have imagined and most Saturdays I will go to the same place to see how the birds are doing and they are the same condition ever since I got the three budgies. And I'm pretty sure they're all the birds they have there is completely sick cuz of how they are and when I went to get one of the three of the birds which is a blue one I saw in the in the cage are dead budgie in the man knew about that dead budgie and he says that he just going to leave it there and it was just painful to see that dead budgie like very painful I wish that all of this will change of how people have these budgies in cages but this is very terrible.
