The Leyburn Cafe ride - I'm a cyclist & I live in the Pennines

- On this ride we are cycling high up in the Pennines which are sometimes called the spine of England. Today we took on 4 of the Yorkshire Dale's iconic climbs with Park Rash, Grinton Moor, Buttertubs and Newby head being the challenges for the day.
If you are a keen cyclist, or are looking to get into this great sport, then I hope my videos give you an insight into road cycling in the North West of the United Kingdom.
With maps, a live narration and a "First person" view of what it is like to descend these great hills, I hope to inspire you to get out there and "Go for a ride"

Big Day Out - great stuff lads. Terrific countryside with some classic Dales passes.
Roll on spring and the warmer, longer days when everything opens up again and the best bikes come out!
Must admit Gordon, I am enjoying the comfort and robustness of the winter bike, but yes, roll on the warmer days out in the Dales.
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures Definitely looking forward to rising temps and extra daylight. I do my big days on titanium so I get comfort too. An armchair that you pedal :))
I live near Leyburn and its a fantastic area to ride.Grinton moor road(firing range) was the Tour de France route 2014…I often end up doing Settle-Kettlewell routes.Great vid 👍🚴🏼

Thank you kindly my friend. I thought I'd lost all the footage for this one a few months ago when the external hard drive completely failed. Fortunately the data was able to be recovered (which was a small fortune might I add) It means a lot to me to be able to tell the story and share the memories, which I think is priceless..

Thanks Michael, it's well worth giving it a go or even doing it over a couple a sections in order to enjoy the views and everything that the Yorkshire Dales has to offer.

Most of the time - off camera, we talk with stupid accents. We even send voice messages to each other too with Sean Kelly being one of them, and here's me trying to give these videos a serious and informative edge to them.

@@MrDazP1adv3ntures from what I've seen so far, I'd say genuine first hand accounts of two friends enjoying their cycling and showing the reality of it. To sum up they turn out to be very good.

Thanks for your comments Terry, they are great appreciated, It's a ride I had been contemplating for a while and today was the day. Me and Mike thoroughly enjoyed it and yes, it is always great to get some good old scram inside you to keep the engine ticking over

As always, amazingly put together with the views, Mikes impressions and seeing him speeding off like the cartoon character “Roadrunner”, absolutely amazing mike.
I weigh in at 81kg and I agree very much that weight difference between riders can make an enormous difference to riding effort and speed.
I always think that September, with Autumn approaching, is the last chance to get a good ride in weather wise before the seasons change.
For me the most dramatic was seeing the long shadows of yourself and Mike cycling when going through Bolton-by-Bowland, perfect.
I always look forward to the next video, and as others have commented, you both inspire other to go out, but I’m not sure about those hills.😮

Thank you Steve, the big hills are always an imposing prospect but once you find your rhythm, it's just a case of getting over them at your own pace.
I can get just as out of breath on a descent as on a climb too.
It was a fab day out and certainly makes the weekend worth it's weight in gold after a tough week at work.
You can be buzzing on a Wednesday after a tour of the Dales like this, which makes you want to come back for more.
Absolutely love riding around the Dale's, just gorgeous lanes.
Can tell you that in the cold,wet,snow, ice its grim. Esp if you throw in some stupid climbs
There is something very special about it for sure. I have been out riding my bike today near Appletreewick. Loved it !

awesome. Best direction to take Buttertubs that aswell! I only managed to get to the Dales a handful of times last year, gonna have to up the ante this year I think!
Defo buddy. Junction 37 M6 is a great place to park up.
You have the Lakes to your left and the Dales to your right.

I usually park in Embsay and start from there, up thru Malham, Stainforth etc either that or park near Hawes if im further North. its a gorgeous ride back aswell thru Burnsall Bridge and Barden Moor. .absolutely stunning, what a gift eh, having this on our doorstep and the means to ride it regularly, very lucky! Hello sir and thank you for watching this one. How's the weather been up your neck o' the woods. We have a great weekend but last week it did rain a lot at times ....
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures HI Daz yes still getting out but when it was icy l came off landed on my bum funny though didn't hurt the bum hurt my ribs. But three lads came off same day not far from me unfortunately one broke his hip one knocked himself unconscious and a broken bike not good .
OMG, that does not sound good, speedy recovery to those people.

Cheers buddy, do you think that your bike would be able to cover this terrain on a full charge ? It would be interesting to know how much they take on long hilly outing
@@MrDazP1adv3ntureson that sort of climbing mate probably wouldn’t even last 15 miles. On my big rides I usually have it switched off for most of it and switch on for crazy climbs. In April I’m buying a normal bike as I’m pulling the extra weight of battery and motor when it’s off 😊
@LakeDistrictcyclist that's good to hear, I take it your natural fitness is developing then.
Must admit, an E-bike sounds like a lot if fun, especially on a hilly section, it gives you more energy for the descent
Yes getting a lot fitter, hopefully another good summer of training and I will be doing routes like this 😊

It is a wonderful place to ride your bike and I hope you have the weather for it because it makes all the difference. Me and Mike were going to cycle down the valley to Reeth a few years ago and had to bail out and go over Buttertubs because of the snow flurries. It all adds to the adventure I guess
Fantastic video. I've cycled amongst many of the lanes featured and it truly is spectacular. Thank you for the reminder though you and Mike seemed to make relatively light work of Park Rash - unlike my good self who huffed and puffed. Well done!

I couldn't do these kind of rides without constantly training through the week.
I guess it pays off in the long run .....

Sure thing Andy, I have been out in the Dales today on a ride and it is kind of infectious stuff. I have been coming back to this area since the days I had my 10sp Peugeot Premiere in 1983

A great exhilarating ride Darren, also an unexpected trip down memory lane, has to be over fifty years since exploring the Butter Tubs which were awesome but scary, don’t remember how we came across them, but do remember staying at Hawes, I recollect buying a beautiful piece of quartz from a mineral shop, wonder if it’s the same shop! 🤔👍🤗
Ps. When you were looking in the mineral shop window, to the right on the floor was what looked like a piece of quartz, but on closer look it was a Kleenex pack of tissues 😂

And as for the rock shop, there is one in Sedbergh and then this one in Hawes, so either way, you were probably very close
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures Hi, Darren, my memory isn’t so clear on specific details, but I can remember the names of villages and towns I’ve visited, I was looking for the Butter Tubs when you were approaching ‘Hawes’ but couldn’t recognise the terrain after all those years, but it was lovely going back in time once again, 🙏😊🤗

That's a good question Leon, Mike tends to wear his helmet at the cafe stops and there is a valid reason but it's not for me to say why. Whereas if my hair is a bit of a mess or needs cutting, I tend to put my beanie hat on at the cafe 🙂

No worries buddy. To be honest it's not always a nice experience having someone waving a camera in front of your face when you want to eat your cake etc, and that's exactly what I do...
