    Great video! After paying a shop to diagnose a stuck fan on, I watched them slap on a new solenoid, then new high pressure switch and charge 2 hours of labor. They swore it was fixed... Didn't bother diagnosing the fan clutch with a vacuum guage or pressure test.
    20 mins down the road fan was stuck on... I drove home and personally removed the fan clutch and hub from the engine bay. Not a hard of a job. I opened the fan clutch on a table and found the 20 cent o ring falling apart, not sealing air in. You couldn't hear it leak but it was enough to force the fan to run.
    Folks, tips in this video will save you hundreds of dollars in bad repair service bills and the frustration of trusting unskilled/ lazy mechanics with your truck.

    Just gotta thank YOU for mentioning the stick clutch. I left my hood open over night and the fan was stuck in afterwards. I jumpered the airline at the switch so it had full truck air to the clutch all the time and with the engine off and air changed rapped it with a hammer and she let go. $450 and many hours saved! Thank YOU so much!!!

    Great video. I subscribed. My 2017 Cascadia sat on my concrete driveway for a month (my bad for not starting it once a week for 30 minutes) and yesterday when I took it for a ride I noticed the fan was on all the time. Watched your video, verified I had air going to it with the ignition switch on, no air leaking, so I tapped on the fan clutch last night,but it would not release. This morning I started up the truck and aired it up to the 140 psi max (last night it was 110-120 psi), shut truck off, turned ignition to the on position and tapped the fan clutch 8 to 10 times and it released. Whew!! Seems to be fine and I will be starting the truck at least once a week from now on. Thanks again. Be safe. ✌️

    Some trucks like paccar may have two high pressure ac switches. One thing with Cummins isx if the fan clutch is bad it will stay in the on position. Also if the clutch is thin enough it can separate and now you have a clutch, fan and radiator to replace. I had the clutch fail in that fashion on my isx

    Great vid....my truck started making a high wind noise while driving. Could it be the fan clutch? The mechanic says I need to change the fan clutch solenoid....but he said the clutch itself is fine. I just wasn't sure if thats the reason for the high wind sound. But what I did notice when he checked and tried to spin the fan by hand....it didn't spin. But he did do air pressure test.....and his suggestion was getting solenoid replaced....it's a 2012 cascadia dd15

    • @DIYSEMI
      @DIYSEMI  Před 3 lety +1

      did he have the key on and air pressure built when he tried to spin it by hand? give that a try. if it spins by hand then the solenoid is releasing the clutch. If not, could be solenoid. try to walk thru the steps in the video. if he did test it with air then he is probably right. He looked at it hands on so I would probably trust what he had to say.

    I have the Detroit D15 and some pressure is building up in the cooling system that pushes coolant out of the surge tank. Engine's fan looks OK. What could cause that problem?

    • @DIYSEMI
      @DIYSEMI  Před 4 lety +2

      that's not good news. without knowing all the details, the first things that come to mind are: bad air compressor, bad head gasket ,or cracked head. If you are looking to start looking for something simple first, check the cap on your surge tank...make sure it is the correct psi, and that it is functioning...or spend a few bucks on a new one. I'm not all that experienced with the dd15, drove one for a bit but never had to work on it. sorry to say, if it's not a faulty pressure cap, then it's probably an expensive fix. Someone more experienced with that engine would be more qualified to help you.... but that's just my first thoughts on it.

      @@DIYSEMI , coolant is pushing and leaking through the little, overfilled hose.
      I noticed silicone under the heads. It says to me there is not head gasket, and somebody put just silicone. I do not think it is original. Truck is 2016, and has just around 300K miles on it.
      Thanks for your good advice. I appreciate it.

      From my experience it came to be the air compressor so I’d troubleshoot that after the filler cap.

      if all the mechanical items seem to be working properly, it is possible it's an ecm issue. or a temp sensor might not be sending a good signal to let the ecm know to kick it in. just my first thought.

    I got a 97 freightliner fld120 with a cummins m11 my fan wont turn off it did twice and started blowing out the over flow line of the reservoir ( i think the reservior was over filled ) my question is even with the fan blowing my temp should still be above 140-150 right? I replaced my thermostat and still have the same issue. Will the fan really keep my water temp down that low?

      @DIYSEMI we haven't been running it for long but last year when we bought it the temp gauge still showed that same temp even in the summer ( I just wrote it off as a bad thermostat ) we just had it replaced and found out it is stuck closed wouldn't that cause it to run hotter? I also live in Florida it was about 55-60° here when we ran it after replacing the thermostat.Thanks for helping me BTW this has been racking my brain for the past few days! I

      did you verify the temp gauge is working, since it never changes?

    On a 2012 Freightliner M2. Once my fan engages, it stays on. It does it even when the A/C is off. That wouldn't have anything to do with the high pressure switch would it?
