i read a story once about a guy who met phish backstage this show and it was his birthday. phish asked him what song he would like to hear and his response was "anything but runaway jim." now if thats a true story i think he got his wish bigtime. this is epic

Easily one of the highlights of the greatest tour in the history of music. Fall Tour 97 is where its at.

14:15 Has to be one of the best subtle flexes of talent I’ve seen from this band. The way they all fall in with their own respective fills and layer on top of each other is incredible. The way that once trey’s lick is finished, Jon hits a quick drum fill and then is IMMEDIATLEY complimented with Page’s haunting keys and it’s all wrapped up in a nice bow with Mike’s bass fill is phenomenal. I love jamming with friends and these kinds of moments where everyone’s on the same wavelength never ceases to amaze me and I just know they had to have a grin on their face after that bar, also the whole groove from 14:00-21:00 is just immaculate.

Fan since 95, saw them in 96 in Tallahassee. Front row won by radio station by my friend. "Hey u know that band called phish? Want some tickets"? um, hell ya. Best time I ever had. This is probably one of the best james ever. Takes me on a journey through my mind. Amazing.

I used to have an hour long commute and I'd pop this jam in after a tough day to relax. I wish Phish still did these prolonged jams.

I remember cooking a steak dinner listening to this jam... On Sirius XM Jam_On a few years ago-- By the time I had finished eating, I could hardly believe my ears when I looked up and noticed these guys were still going at it XD what memories--

I always wondered if he meant he watched Stop Making Sense or if he really got that pure unadulterated crack and watched the Rome 1980 video.
If you haven't seen Talking Heads Rome 1980 stop what you're doing and do that now. Seeing them crushing all those Remain In Light songs live before they even came out is a great reminder of why that album completely and utterly changed the direction of Phish once Phish got into it in 1996 (took awhile for the lessons to take hold, but by summer 97, they were a funk beast)

WTF is up with Phish never playing either of those last 2 songs again? A travesty! At least they do Golden Age. TVOTR really channelled the Heads better than anyone else outside of maybe early 80s band A Certain Ratio. Radiohead really has that paranoid polyrythmic funk thing down pat as well.

remain in light had an enormous impact on phish 96 on and I think really helped devolop and shape what became Phish's definitive sound. Sure, they had a unique and identifiable sound pre 96 but the moogified space funk and subtler eno inspired ambient stuff that began to dominate jams in the late nineties were seemingly devoloped from learning remain in light.

uh lots of people/musicians have thought it possible, & achieved 1-song SET. Ever heard of Mike Gordon's(the bassist for PHISH; one of best in the biz) 'famous show' with his side-project, Live in Athens, GA[UGA], where they played the most epic *FOAM* .. ever?!? It was over an hour in duration; & as one whom was in attendance, I can tell you that it was absolutely magic! The type of atmosphere that only Phish(Cactus in this case) can create. I wonder if the band knew it was going to be this epic when it started or if they just felt the magic happen and let it go spontaneously ? Were they even aware of how long this was going on ? A musical masterpiece for sure. They've probably got their own early 90's practice tapes with tons of all-day non stop jams. Performance art.

It isn't really. They stuck with the main progression for a few minutes, but they constantly changed it up, from the chords to the tempo, to keep the song interesting. It's not like they actually played the SAME thing for 59 minutes. Minute 37 is much different from minute 12 (etc etc).
