Urist "McDuff" McDwarf, a memepost-level character that was a heavily armored dwarf wrestler. I meant for him to be a complete joke, but the campaign's setting of a megadungeon let him hold enemies in place and create chokepoints for his party to exploit. He was beloved by the party, and we all wept when he died. After his death, we as players swore to have at least one McDwarf in the party at all times.

In my opinion being a forever DM makes it hard to make a meaningful character. However when you finally get traction, you can make somebody extraordinarily special. That being said here is my PC I made for a one-shot I played with my brother-in-law.
An Owlin Artillerist Artificer named Owlimarr Hu (Pun fully intended). He was a shut-in tinkerer who owned a small shop taking commissions making small magic items, such as Bags of Holding or Bottles of Boundless Coffee (his personal favorite). Owlimarr also has a keen eye for things that go boom or bang, hence the Artillerist sub-class. Also Mr. Hu is only 3'4" and 40 lbs. I also picked up the telekinetic feat (which gives Mage Hand) and Enlarge/Reduce. Owlimarr can walk, fly with wings, or carry himself with Mage Hand, all while having a tiny cannon that I make look like a handgun. All in all, my most recent and favorite character is an owl with a bottle of hot coffee and a gun.

I'm currently making a 5e campaign that my forever DM is playing in. He wanted a wiz/fight cross class (old 3.5 habits), but has settled on the spellcasting fighter subclass. High elf. Lots of backstory that he is severing all connections to at the beginning of the game (I got a little bit of 🙄 for that, but I'm gonna let him play how he wants). I'm very excited, because his wife and daughter (my goddaughter) are playing their first game with us. Wood elf druid (wife) and death domain cleric (daughter). I'm also bringing a friend who is playing a wood elf ranger

Last time the cycle was broken for this forever DM I played Johan (roughly 2 1/2 years ago), a half elf inquisitive rouge that was a journeyman for one of the faction's cartography guild. He also moonlighted as an information broker, which helped our party pretty immensely. In the last session of the campaign (ended at level 6 due to the ever present scheduling conflicts) he almost single handedly destroyed the orc general due to his insightful fighting ability. It was fun while it lasted, then it was back to the grindstone...

Vargas. just Vargas, in Traveller (a scifi ttrpg), to create an image he was a big lug of a man, auburn hair on a short mohawk and a pair of matte chrome arms powerful enough to use as pipe wrenches or crowbars, smoking a cheap cigar as he's cleaning the crews weaponry, assembling armor or maintaining the ships power core. Vargas was a former Mars-academy army engineer who had lost the use of both his arms in a FUBAR operation, and got them replaced with cybernetics. He ended up as the ship's chief engineer when the crew was escaping from Earth after a couple missions went sideways for a... less than legal agency they all enlisted with.
They ended up messing around in the solar system, made an enemy of the UN World Government, fought alien bugs and eventually returned to Earth and succeeded in an unlikely mission that crippled UN.
It was great fun, even though there was a bit of chafing with the DM at certain point.

Not quite a forever dm anymore, as my players took up wanting to run games themselves (so proud) and I have been invited to a few. But my first one was albehe, (pronounced al-vey, it's galiec.) He was a izzet battle master artificer minotaur in a ravnica campaign. He has a family line in the boros and still kept himself in shape, but was way to creative and bored with Soldiering. So he ended up applying, and got in into the izzet. He invented the ruby of the war Mage, in-game. My favorite moment was that in an attempt to be stealthy, when attacking a warehouse that was part of a crime ring, he bull rushes the guard off the dock and legit runs past the open door to do so. He has Disadvantage On the stealth factor of the attack, and while he rolls poorly, all the guards inside completely miss the massive man just clomping by at full speed and the following splash of their buddy going into the water.

Forever DM here, I’ve DMed 2 campaigns spanning 3 years for my friend group and my friend finally wanted his try at it so i gleefully obliged and created a behemoth Known as Mausoleum. Mausoleum is a happy go lucky Minotaur beast Barbarian with magical Gauntlets that change forms in his different rages, The first couple sessions consisted of Riding a wind dragon like a bull, getting possessed and almost causing a TPK and then bringing a tree down on a giant hunter worm and LOTS OF PRESSING BUTTONS. like literal buttons, he loves those things. Needless to say he’s extremely fun and strong and the party adores him, His main goal is to ascend to godhood and in recent sessions my DM has hinted at that it might actually be possible for him since his unknown lineage might contain some dietic blood so who knows, the newest God of himboism might take his throne in the clouds.

A Goblin Wild Magic Barbarian, backstory was basically raised by a hag in secret and mildly experimented on leaving him with wild magic. His overarcing plot was to become an incredible detective, about half way through the campaign it was revealed all the cases he was solving he actually committed the crime and framed a random bystander. Since I had DM'd multiple campaigns the DM basically let me have this without question as it didn't really do much in the campaign. It was super duper fun and the randomness of the wild magic table added so much extra to my PC. 10/10 fun time.

Haemir Gantar, a chaos barbarian/circle of the moon druid combo. He was the youngest of his family of 8 siblings that grew up on a large orchard and farm. We were playing descent into Avernus, and Haemir was one of two members of his large family who didn't get sucked into hell. When his brother (an ex-hellrider due to a severe injury) asks for him to take his place in investigating cult activities in Baldur's Gate. Haemir was a bit of a stick in the mud at first (the rest of the party was very chaotic in nature). He'd try to wrangle the rest of the party members from doing trying to do too crazy stunts. But, over the course of the campaign he pretty much became the "dad" of the group, in a good way. He was a solid foundation for the group, and at his wedding at the end (he married the wizard tiefling who teleports you to Avernus), everyone came together to celebrate. It was such a great break from DM-ing, and such a great campaign with my friends all around!

As a forever DM, I would love to play a character that has the same options that I give my players when I am a DM. Like when I am a DM I ask my characters what they want to play and work with them to build their character, all the strange and exotic classes, races and archetypes so that they can build what they want and have fun seeing what they can do. The only problem is that when one of my players wants to DM, its always just core rulebook only. This has been a bit of a downer for me and other players as they could have so much fun with the options, but when it moves yet again to another player they are just as restrictive. Often saying that they dont know how to deal with the more exotic races even though they play them all the time in my games as well as me letting them making up their own races. I keep telling them "well you played them in may games and the only way you will get use to dealing with them as a DM is by running them as a DM", and they have DM'ed before but always with the "core rulebook only" rule.

I made a fairy wizard/fighter that was entirely designed to support the other player, who was a rogue. Most players try to be the one that hits the hardest and doest the coolest thing during the session. Using my turns to constantly give advantage to the other player, or enable him to do that cool thing on his turn, was very rewarding and a lot of fun.

So I have not yet broken the cycle but until then I have a whole laundry list of character concepts I want to try including one I have reserved as my first. Yeroc the Barbarian. He's a half orc that left his tribe because he just didn't have that killer instinct. He doesn't actually want to fight but oh boy is he good at it when he does. Sure he can swing an axe well enough but when he sees something wrong like a grave injustice he will F*** shit up. I went with Barbarian because combat is pretty simple get angry and hit things. It's nice to be able to join the battle and kill enemies like a rockstar which frees up my brain for more roleplay oriented things which is where the meat of the game is for me. So basically murder enemies and then go and be the group dad giving sage advice and cracking bad jokes.

Got an idea for a cursed item, and because i don't know if i will ever get to use it, i'll write it doen here.
When you roll, the better you roll, the worse it does, and vice versa.
If you roll 3,it's as if you rolled an eleven, and if you hit a 20,it's as if it was a 2.
    Then we apply modifiers.
    If it was a 2 with a +3 modifier we get a 5. And that's worse.
And in the end, we double it up. So,if we roll a one, that is like a normal 20,then we add a +3 modifier, with it becoming like a 17, and in the end,it doubles up, and becomes a 34.
Don't know if it's good or not. Just wanted to share.

Im still a Forever DM until this day because no game that doesnt have me involved in the DM process doesnt last past the third session, if that.
But heres a couple of mine:
A Dragon sealed into a human form, who ended up with amnesia. At the time of the adventure, the seal has started to weaken, causing draconic traits to start to emerge. The slight wisps of a breath weapon, scales flaring up when their emotions peak, etc. But due to the seal and amnesia, he's conditioned to believe this is all 'Normal Human stuff', and denies being a Dragon. In fact, he simply believes that Dragons are the final stage of the human growth cycle. Human -> Dragonborn -> Dragon.
Mechanically hes just a reflavored Dragonborn.
A cleric beloved by an entire Pantheon of Gods, each one giving him a fragment of power as a bribe, giving him enough to be a cleric. The issue is, they all want his devotion to them alone, so if he picks one, the rest will treat it as a betrayal and smite him. So he has to negotiate with the gods to use any cleric feats without them getting mad.
His goal is to find a way to get rid of the Pantheon, because its a stressful existence, and have you tried getting a good nights sleep while getting divine visions or being pulled into some chatroom?
Mechanically, I roll a d12 and whatever number I land on is his Domain until the next long rest. I can reroll it once after waking up but need to pass a persuassion check or suffer a punishment, which could be straight up having no domain at all. Besides that its normal cleric stuff.
Third is a Lightning Gensai Artificer who uses his electricity to power his devicee. He was born to a temple devoted to a god. One day a nearby village was attacked, but the Temple had a rule of not interfering with fate. He didnt like that and rallied a group to save the village. It worked, but he was outcast
Ever since then he's held a grudge against higher powers, and seeks to prove that true strength comes from your own will and determination.
The most recent creation of mine is a Eladrin Elf who left the Feywild to see what it is that other races do. He stumbled across a Artificer Workshop, mistook what was going on, 'learnt' their craft from them, and now proclaims themselves as an Artificer. They're actually just a Wizard, using magic to reshape components and junk into 'gadgets' that cast the spells. Like Shocking Grasp is basically a Tazer, Chromatic Orb is a handcannon, etc.
Ironically, he's in a party with an actual Artificer, who constantly has to restrain himself from correcting him every time he talks about his 'craft'. They tried actually teaching him, but he's so innocent and clueless the lessons just go over his head. After all, why go searching for parts when its far easier to just conjure them from nothing?

Let me first state that I ran this character past the DM and all the other players and got thumbs up from everyone: I played a paranoid-schizophrenic anarcho-capitalist hillbilly gnome artificer. His goals in life were to
    - never pay taxes
    - kill all the squirrels because they're not real and spy on your for the man
    - have Jebedia Thornbuckle Inc. corner the alchemical market
    - find a cute gnome GF and settle the new world as Jebedia Thornbuckle the First (he was originally the 17th)
I made him because I thought "What kind of a character would use the spell Fabricate to turn potatoes and water into bathtub vodka" and this is what I came up with.

  • @MechbossBoogie
    @MechbossBoogie Před 2 měsíci +1

In my experience the more basic the character the longer it tends to survive.
I min-maxed a fighter in Pathfinder to be an absolute meatshield. She died session one because the DM rolled 7 crits in a row on her. She tanked them all. My artifice/Knowledge cleric? Stepped up to big bads all the time, hardly ever got hit. Got yelled at a lot because I was the healer and I was frontlining him. But every attack that went my way and didn't land was one hit the main damage dealer wasn't taking that I didn't have to dump a healing spell into, and I kept him from getting flanked. On top of that I was also landing attacks.
It was interesting to me that the DM was putting almost every single attack into me being on the front line. I'm pretty sure he was trying to prove a point about the healer not being on the front line but I wasn't going to stop him, because the attacks hardly ever connected and he complained the whole time that he couldn't hit me.
Yeah. I know. That's why the healer should be on the front line. If you're casting healing spells during a fight one of two things happened: either you're doing it wrong, or something went completely sideways.
So, a lot less damage coming into the party, more damage coming out, a lot less going into one guy and it was getting spread out more which is significantly easier to heal with the channel positive energy ability. Why give clerics medium armor and shield proficiency if they're not supposed to use it? I've got more than enough health to actually take a hit. Maybe not at fighter/barbarian levels, but it's enough that you're not going to have a downed healer if a couple hits get through. There's a reason a lot of DM's don't allow certain Cleric builds involving full plate and a tower shield at early levels. Basic Clerics and Druids are actually really good if you build them right and it doesn't require a whole lot of mental effort to get it to work.

I've only been a player for a few months when i started DnD. I've changed to DM after those campaigns broke due to scheduling and one where i dropped out due to it no being a fit for me. I have been DMing for 2 or so years afther in one mostly homebrew campaign that is still running with the party at lvl 15 now. A few months back , one of my players decided to try to DM as well his own first campaign. And so , "Fortune" came to be . A recycled concept from one of my npcs. A Fairy Draconic Sorceres , and as avatar , "Navi" from the Zelda games. Ice dragon heritage , but specialized in "hey listen"(thunder) damage and stabies (rapier with ruby of the warmage and a shield). Sowing mischief both on frontlines and back lines. Up until now she had a great luck with some random Nat 20 when using Chromatic Orb , petting a dragon ( got downed for it , but still a nat 20) and some other random athletic checks . Now from the navi form as base , she changes froms into the "Fortune Fairy"s (yu gi oh) that match the element of the spell she uses. As we are preparing to take on the dragon that she pet but it did not respond in kind.
Other party members : Assimar Paladin , Risen Bard and Halfling (maybe or gnome) Druid.

Auron a homebrew, ancient gold dragonborn wings and large size. He was a paladin of Io drawing his power from tiamat and bahamut. His ultimate goal being to unite the two Gods to restore Io. After 2 years and level 10-20 this goal was achieved and it was amazing. Thanks to my dm Chris I got to see a decade long character concept brought to life.
