Awesome video Dylan. Back in 2020, I had played with Drone Deploy to see what all the rave was about....and I was blown away by the clarity of the Ortho Map I had captured with my Mavic Mini 1 and it's tiny 12 MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor. Now I have the M3 and have been generating my own ortho maps and man this drone just continues to amaze me

Thanks for the insight. Although not sure this growth will benefit commercial drone operators so much with companies becoming more capable than ever to run their own in-house drone operations. Training providers will be sure to benefit of course. The same way the commercial photography market declined in the early 2000s and 2010s as digital photography hardware/software developed to enable more in-house photo and video solutuions.

How are you looking at the introduction of the Autel Max 4T for mapping and thermal ? It doesn't seem to have the limitations with the SDK for 3rd party app's on the controller that DJI has built into the individual product lines. And it looks like the camera and zoom spec's are better than the DJI line of products, mapping functions, and says that it has terrain following. The meshing is interesting, use of multiple drones and being able to use a drone in the mesh as a repeater. This looks like it might be the answer around all of DJI's limitations. But the price is up there.

Yes, we can all agree that industries will include more and more drone technologies (HW + SW/AI) to automate a lot of tasks. But, I don't know, whether there is a growing market for human piloting - rather the opposite way ...
Humans are still required to take the drones to the work site, swap out their batteries, etc. Even if the piloting uses a lot of AI, the clients don't need to know that.
Exactly! There is going to be a mesh of both realities for the long term.

I just found your channel today, but missed your Richmond, VA appearance. I have the original Mavic Pro and Mini 3 Pro which the SDK update should be out in the next month or so according to what I read from DJI which said the early 2nd quarter of 2023. I also have access to a Mavic 2 Pro if required. I've flown drones for 18 years and I want to start shifting into making it a business. What would you suggest as my first venture to get some income with the UAV at my disposal? How do you get your foot in the door to get your first customers?

Plenty of folks do corn, soybeans, wheat, etc (traditional cash row crops), but I’m finding it difficult to source a software package that applies all the crop analysis to grasses and pastures. I am glad i found your channel. I live in Nova Scotia in Canada . We have been hit with a major hurricane in the last 6 months millions of dollars of damage from farmers to wood lot owners . My buddy approached me asking about my drones i have some cheep ones i have been practicing with .he wants me to do an aerial survey of his wood lot. The 3d molding program would be an extremely productive way to produce a report for him. I worked in the logging industry for several years and have multiple connections . The drones i have are incapable of doing the task of surveying the large wood lots. I was thinking of the DJI mini pro 3 as my upgrade. I was thinking of opening a business dealing with drone photography and surveying. The rural area where i live does not have any existing services like that. The possibility is endless farming, logging,
Real-estate . Would you recommend the dji mini 3 pro as a reasonably good drone for starting my business it seams to be decently priced with high grade professional software. I was hurt on the job and no longer to do physical work. I fine now boredom is the real fight since I have been medically retired. I feel I have more to offer and I'm not ready to curl up and Drift Away into nothingness. So I've been contemplating ways to get back out there make a little bit of money using my drones. Is a mini 3 pro and air 2s good for any of these?
I was in the drone industry for 3 years and spent more on drones than I ever made back. How is the industry growing if no one wants to pay anything over a couple hundred dollars with all the new pilots joining in everyday and offering such low prices since they’re just getting started? I still have all my drones and would love to get back into them if someone could explain how they’re are getting proper paying clients. Everyone I dealt with either wasn’t interested or wouldn’t pay over $200-$400 for a job.
What industry were you focusing in? If it’s residential real estate you will never get anyone to pay you over $200. As soon as you can step into the commercial side of it (such as the ones I highlighted in the video) there’s opportunity to make decent money. But none of this is a guarantee either, nothing in life really is a guarantee in all honesty.
@@DylanGorman I was doing marketing videos for businesses at first and making $500-$1500 per video at first. Then by the 2nd year most people would come back saying they had a new pilot willing to do my job for $100 and that I’m too expensive and trying to scam people now. So I attempted to transition into industrial drone services after getting super lucky with a crypto pump. I made the mistake of going straight to buying an M300 RTK only to find out I needed like $10k+ more in certifications and all types of insurances that I had no idea how to get. I ended up just keeping all my drones but stopped offering drone services and just went back to running google ads.
How are the google ads working for you? I have never tried it.
You missed a one industry that is quietly🤫 involving drones and drone tech to everyday usage; Law Enforcement. From using drones as an eye in the sky for over watch to drones in front of SWAT. They are using drones to map crimes scenes and gather evidence in many crimes. Not only officers trained on the use of drones they reaching out to drone tech companies for other innovations.
Good point! Unfortunately as a civilian it’s hard to “jump” into that industry. Law enforcement has always used new tech to enhance their safety and monitoring for crimes, thats usually the hardware and software companies that can play in their politics.

Just bought a DJI mini 2SE and absolutely love it and the opportunity that it can bring. I can see home inspections (siding, roofs and such) being something to specialize in and peddling to Real Estate brokers. Is the FAA Drone License required in order to make any money with drones?

It really depends on which market you get into. Finding a repeat client or a job that requires you to revisit the site multiple times is usually a good starting point to help pay for the software.

Just wait til the API is released for the mini 3 pro this year, the. It will be able to work with all this software.
That’s only if the software companies update their apps to support it. That will still take time for that to happen even when the SDKs come out

I was curious to know if you feel like these industries are still able to be broken into by an individual looking to start a small operating business. When I google my city and drone thermography services there are a lot of sites that come up with professional businesses already offering these services. Do you think that someone who is just starting to get into these industries is capable of competing with larger scale organizations that already have a good foothold in the drone imaging industry?
Im glad that you actually did a little research to see your "competition" in you city because most people just comment without actually putting in any effort to back up their statements. What I will say is that most drone companies that say they do "thermal" services or list off all the services that they "provide" haven't actually provided those services or have only done it a handful of times. It's very easy to just list off all the know applications that a drone can fit and then just fake it till you make it providing that service which actually hurts the industries and individuals who are actually capable of offering the proper service. So short answer is I do believe that there is room to get into the industry as a sole proprietor, however, it will take hard work to do so.

It seems like when I looked at their site analytics that they were bigger companies with HQ in NY and other capitals but they didn't have an actual presence in my city, they just push the different state names in their analytics to push for calls and quotes for there(or they will travel to it) so it did seem like there was opportunity for market share to be had in my area.

I only used my Mini 2 to do mapping (just to see the overall site and looks neat in report).
Aker technologies detects specific crop diseases from drone flyovers as well.

The new DJI Agra T-40 is a big step towards an agricultural boom in drones. The T-40 is better for orchids, etc and not quite there for row crops. Row crop spraying will need at least twice the gallons of herbicide per flight and twice the flight time between battery charges. Also, the FAA will have to make some exceptions for the use of large drones for row crop spraying. Since they are used only at low altitudes this should be done.
I am itching to get my hands on a T-40. Looks like such a killer drone for the ag world

Thanks for the great video. I'm interested in what UAS you would recommend in this political climate. There are real bans of Chinese drones in some jurisdictions and there is a threat of a federal ban. I like Skydio but they're behind the Chinese in image quality.

I think the agricultural aspect with limits to water resources are going to make this side of the industry explode in coming years. Especially in the western part of the US, crop yield is going to be huge based on water access or lack there of as we’ve seen in recent years.

Just stumbled onto your videos. I am in public safety and have been "selling" drones to all the agencies I am affiliated with. Its a hard sell and I don't know why. I love your outlook however it looks like most of the future will eliminate the pilot in person.
Right, it's hard to see what actual work will be available apart from drone software programmer, drone sales man, automatic drone maintenance, when everyone just wants to be a pilot.

Hi Dylan, big big fan. I'd like to get your opinion on a matter that I see discussed a lot. Some argue that being just a DSP isnt a smart idea and that drones should just be used as a tool in an already existing job or profession. Others argue that being a DSP and having that as a sole profession, with obvious training in other niches, is also doable. I'd like to get your opinion on the matter.
Honestly both arguments are valid but everyone is in a different situation. Sometimes it’s better to add a drone to your services, other times is best to be just good a the drone services part. Really depends where you are in the industry.

A lot of these companies have so much money that they can hire someone in house and buy whatever drones they want. And it's so specialised and expensive that not many can just start a company doing what u doing. Only a few lucky ones who might later get big contracts.
Interesting stuff but I can't help thinking the growth will just come to existing companies with the tech, experience & contracts already in place.
New opportunities pop up each and every day. There will be a constant change in the industry as tech evolves.

I don't have any certifications or degrees (never went to college). But I do firmly believe having a background in a technical field can help out a lot and even give you a leg up in the industry as a whole.

If everything goes well, I will be working in the construction field here in Chicago. Planning on getting my Part 107 and hope that will help find a job in the construction/drone industry
I heard all this for 10 years. Did it for a living until 107 came out and every person that could get 70% on a knowledge test that tells you nothing about how to really do the job. Then they all came to the market with their little plastic certificate under bidding each other. Even a large construction site takes less than a hour and no one is going to pay you enough to make it worth the time. Once you pay for all the subscriptions to process the data and generate reports and hardware, you’ll have enough left over for Taco Bell. Without BVLOS and all the competition, your time is better spent becoming a real pilot.
A lot has changed over the last 10 years. Additionally there’s more to bring a commercial drone pilot than just getting a part 107.

It seems that drone in a box solutions would reduce the number of opportunities for construction work. What is going to increase those opportunities for pilots in the future? Also in Construction, as well as infrastructure and specifically oil and gas, is the current trend to bring those service in house, or are small companies or independent pilots still able to get a foot hold in these verticals?
Drone in a box is only going to get rid of the low paying jobs allowing for the “trade” style inspections and technical flying pilots to get better and more focused on more important tasks. At least that’s how I see it!
So...I'm no expert but my question is what about a pilot having to have eyes on the aircraft. I must be missing something.

We’ve been mapping for 7 years now and it’s never been more than a side hustle unfortunately. We’ll do nothing for months then £6K in a week, it’s bizarre
How will it blow up if the country bama DJI drones?
Drone companies that program drones get involved with installing Aviation and Govt. legislation determine where we fly. They simply make the restricted zones larger all the time. The drone cannot fly. The Drone manufacturers may as well fold to prevent our unnecessary purchase of a restricted Item. In Canada we practically need a pilots license, registration, certification and are permit which costs more than the Drone. Also they cannot fly without an LTE network connection. Check before you buy.
So none of these drones I'll be buying, don't want them exploding on me. Nice video thanks for the heads up
Clearly the adoption of drones in these sectors will continue. The real question is what percentage of usage will be done by drone service providers versus in-house drone programs. I suspect that more companies are bringing drone technology in-house, leaving less business for DSPs. I haven't seen any data projecting this service mix, but new DSPs need to understand the changing landscape. I think the inspection work will largely be automated to the point of eliminating the pilot (i.e. drone in a box flying an automated mission). Traditional solar panels will be replaced with new solar "stickers" that can be monitored with AI and cost effectively replaced when they fail, eliminating the need for maintenance. So, in-house drone adoption and additional automation will force consolidation in the DSP market. We need to think about how we survive with those dynamics in play. Thoughts?

It’s affordable relative to the work that you get with it. $5k-15k contracts for data capture and delivery with LiDAR, I think $30k for a sensor is reasonable.
