  • This is a quick fix guide for those who use Ubuntu, and find Google Chrome opens a blank window when they click on a hyperlink, rather than opening the URL.

No problem ulpanikk. Glad it helped. It doesn't appear that many people have this issue judging by the view count, but I'm pleased to hear it's still saving some people from the irritation of this problem!

Thanks, %u helped... I did have this problem with Firefox (in Linux Mint). I reinstalled Linux Mint on my old laptop and I did get this problem, while click on hyperlinks it just opened a new blank window (not a new tab to existing opened Firefox window).
Only thing I can say (little complain), that it is VERY hard to see what you typed in there, but hear you talk about url, I did type url and that did indeed change from opening new window to a new tab, but didn't found that site (url). Try to see what you typed ended to change that to "%url" but that lead to try opening rl so I did figure out it should be %u
I will recommend you fix this in the description (that it need to type %u to fix this).
    But again, thank you.

Do u have a tut for macbook?

Afraid not Osman. But as both Mac OS X and Linux tried to stay similar to Unix, it is worth looking for a similar file just in-case they are aligned (I have a feeling however that ".desktop" files are not in Mac OS X. In Mac OS X "/Users" is the equivalent of Ubuntu or Linux "/home" I believe. So worth looking for /Users/{your username}/.local/share/applications
Obviously the other option is to uninstall and reinstall Chrome and see if it corrects the issue.
Please do respond if you find the answer, as this will probably be really helpful for others.

I tryed to find .local and share but coulnt find anything on my computer. I also opened the packages insite chrome on my mac, but still nothing similar to yours. So no, i still haven't fix this issue.

Sorry to hear that Osman. I'm looking around for the differences Mac may have. In the meanwhile, I would suggest:
      1. Clear the Chrome browsing data if you don't mind losing it (support.google.com/chrome/answer/2392709)
      2. Reset Chrome settings to default (support.google.com/chrome/answer/3296214)
It's always worth trying these steps, and obviously upgrade to the latest version of Chrome, if you're not already running it.
If this doesn't work, it's probably worth checking whether you have exactly the same issue as this video covered for Ubuntu. i.e. Chrome works fine when typing a URL or clicking within a website. It fails only when opening a hyperlink from other application (then Chrome opens, but doesn't go to the URL)
