  • This video looks at the options for storing Bitlocker Recovery Keys, and hopefully will help you identify where you stored yours.
    Covers querying Windows for your current Bitlocker Recovery Key (if you currently have access to the files on the drive), and the original Bitlocker Recovery Pin creation in-case you can't get into Windows without it.

      @@rahneegultiano7648 Really sorry to hear that. I try to block and remove the spammers as fast as I can from comments. The authorities have more knowledge of Bitcoin address owners than people think. It would be sensible to report the address to online scam addresses and the authorities of your country if you are happy to. I doubt you would see your money back, but it is worth seeing if they can be stopped from future scams.

    Thanks for this, really saved my day! Apparently my Surface Pro (2017) came with the drive locked as I was never prompted to set a pass code for this "feature". Only ran into it now trying to do a clean install and got stuck in a bootloop! Thankfully your advice to check my MS account did, indeed, show the pass code. So again, thank you so much!
    Hope you are staying safe and well.

    Thank you so much. I am an 18 year old girl and I got this Hp PC for Mr my graduation. I turned on my laptop like an hour ago to see it asking for a bitlocker recovery key, I have never seen or heard of that before. I was just excited to continue watching an anime o started and was so annoyed and upset and even more so because I felt clueless and could do nothing about it. I followed the instructions countless times, the key was not on my Microsoft account. I was about to just reset everything when I decided to watch a video from the video section on Google. I found this. And I got the key. I felt like crying because I thought I would lose my information so it may sound like a bit if a drag but with all my heart, I thank you. I'm happy again.

      Please help... I follow your instructions to the tee (Commandline method) but it only gives me alpha numeric codes and not the number 48-digit code required to unlock. I feel like I'm so close yet so far. Have you come across cases where there is no code generated?

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  Před 6 lety

      Hi Luthando, yes I have. The code isn't shown if the drive is currently locked, or you're not using a pin/password. For clarity, this video isn't a hacking tutorial, there are some pieces of software out there that will (very very slowly) try every password possible to get in. The video assumes you have lost your recovery code, but still know the pin/password. You need to enter the pin/password so you have access to the drive for the command line method to work.
      If you genuinely don't know your pin/password or the recovery code, you are looking at having to try to crack the password. As skylark304 suggests, Bitlocker is extremely strong, and not a quick (or often worthwhile) task.

    So i have situation where the extra drive got locked out. The cmd prompt actually works, but the problem i get is that it is not showing the numerical password. It's basically showing the key, which of course have letters on it. How in the world do i bypass this problems? it's been pissing me off because recently my computer seems to catch a virus and this occurs.

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  Před 6 lety

      Hi Ernest, I've not seen a virus Bitlocker encrypt a drive before though I have heard rumours of it. If it was the virus, and it used your identity to encrypt the drive, it's worth checking the Onedrive.com (per 2:17), in-case the key was uploaded there. It's also worth Googling about the virus (check your virus scanner logs if you can't remember the name of the specific virus your PC had), as it is possible that someone has discovered a standard password it maybe using to encrypt your drive.
      If that doesn't work, and you genuinely didn't encrypt it yourself, then your only logical option left is going to be the brute-force the password. The command prompt option only works when you have unlocked the drive, which you obviously cannot.
      I've used Elcomsoft Distributed Password Recovery before. Using a single computer to crack the Bitlocker password is VERY slow, but may give you an option. They do a free trial version, which will recover some letters of the password. If it's a dictionary word, you maybe able to guess the rest. There are other products out there too, and I can't stress enough how slow this is as an option, but if you genuinely didn't encrypt the drive, then I'm afraid I believe this approach is your only option.
      It goes without saying, make sure you have up-to-date virus protection and do a full scan of your PC first, as you don't want the virus to fight the software, or indeed to reencrypt if you manage to find the password.
      Best of luck Ernest. Would be great to hear how you get on.

      @Artexic  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Love Area, I'm afraid this seems to be a common topic that appears in the comments. If none of the other options work (the OneDrive one seems to work for many), then I believe you have two options: wipe the drive (losing the data), or look into some Bitlocker bruteforce/cracking software. Bitlocker bruteforce or cracking software literally tries every single password possible. I've never tried it myself, and believe it could take a very very long time (there maybe companies out there that can charge to do it faster). Sorry, but I think they would be your last options if you genuinely can't get it from any of the other options in the video.

      Sorry to hear that Ariba. It is possible the only copy of your key was saved to the drive itself, and therefore is not accessible.
      If you definitely haven't changed anything (new hardware, or Windows installation/upgrade), then I'm afraid, I don't believe there is any reasonable way to recover your data. If however anything has been changed, you may find that reverting the change will make the original method of authentication work again.
      Sorry the video wasn't able to help on this occasion.

      Hi Miklos, not sure I understand your question. If you're still having an issue, feel free to reply with a more detailed description. Unfortunately I can't help if you're locked out of a drive that you can't find the recovery keys or original password after trying all the options in the video.

    I have bought a windows surface pro3 via rebuy so it's been used before. I have not activated a BitLocker or anything. Now it's requesting a recovery key which I definitely did not save anywhere. Is it possible that it's saved on my microsoft Account (which I don't have access to at the moment)?
    Is it possible that it's still the bitlocker of the previous owner even though it must have been reset? If so, is there any possibilty to access my computer again without finding out the recovery key (which would be impossible since I don't know the previous owner)? I've already tried to reset but it's not working.
    Please somebody help me, I really need my computer!

      That's what I'd like to know too. The best I can fathom is it's a piece of useless software that frustrates the end-user but has no other use! Now I've turned it off it's staying off.

    My laptop recently started displaying BitLocker Recovery page, I’ve never set up BitLocker and hadn’t even heard about it until now. I’ve haven’t got a key, as I’ve never used or set up BitLocker. I’ve tried the PC reset and loose everything - which isn’t an issue it’s a small and simple laptop with very little on it.. however nothing is working and I cannot get passed the recovery page. Could anyone help me figure this out? Thank you!

    Hi - my WD Passport remote drive appears to have acquired a new recovery key as the Key ID is not what I've backed up and not what microsoft has on my account under the listed keys - any ideas on what's happening? cheers...

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  Před 6 lety

      Hi Peter, I wouldn't expect the key ID to change unless the encryption is changed. I've not monitored it for an external drive, but wonder if you have moved the drive into computers with different versions of Windows. I'm not sure if a move from Win7 to Win10 would result in a change to the encryption (as they run different versions of Bitlocker).
      Do you have the password (assuming it is password locked)? You can use the Command Prompt to get the new recovery key, if you have the password to unlock, otherwise it sounds like you are currently locked out of the drive.
      If you're locked out, it would be good to know whether you have tried this on the PC that you used to encrypt the drive, plus the PC you last wrote a file to the drive with. Lastly, while I thinking questions... is this drive purely on personal computers, or has it connected to a company PC that may have additional Bitlocker tools running on them?

      @oswrdfsh Před 6 lety

      Artexic - Hi and thanks for such a detailed response... I've used this remote hard drive on multiple PCs (all personal / non-company) without previous problems... the PC that was first used needs no encryption and when the USB cable is connected the folder opens without any password or bitlocker key being required...
      However, it's on machines that have previously accepted the encryption key from a common key ID that is no longer accepting the previous Key-ID and instead requesting a key for a new Key-ID...
      All these machines run Windows 8.1...
      I did just try and open on my work laptop with runs windows 10 and went into the 'shell' (old c-prompt screen) and used the 'manage-bde' command... it revealed an external numerical key which when copy and pasted into the password field (on being prompted for encryption key) produced a 'error in digital group 1' error message...
      Do you know what that means and why this isn't working?
      Thanks...

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  Před 6 lety

      Peter, I must admit I've never come across that error before, though I've found enough differences between Win8.1 and Win10 implementations of Bitlocker, that I don't trust moving between devices between them.
      I'm going to guess that the machine the drive works with has had "automatically unlock this drive" ticked at some point in the process of usage, and hence why it works.
      I can't get my head around the change the key ID, this should remain static. You should be able to run the manage-bde command on the Win8.1 device that the drive works on. That way, you can check that it gives the same key ID as the other devices. If they match, it maybe sensible to change the password, or even re-encrypt the drive, to be certain it is locked with a password only (no TPM) given you want the drive to move between PC's.
      Afraid I can't get my head around why the drive worked on all Win8.1 PC's before, and now shows a new key ID, when the original PC is obviously automatically decrypting the drive, so must see it as unchanged.

    Have a Problem for ya. I already have BitLocker installed on my laptop computer. I use it regularly. (But my laptop did a Microsoft Update today...) Now, when I turn on my computer .... all I 'get' is a completely Blue Screen 100% Blue. So.... I followed my hunch and typed in my password with proper key strokes (without physically seeing any characters - or even the text box - on my screen)...and then my computer launches... My Question is: How do I regain the Normal Written BitLocker Text To Appear On My Computer Screen Again.??

    • @Artexic
      @Artexic  Před 6 lety

      Hi David, this was a common issue on Windows 10 a couple of years ago. It was fixed for most people by opening a Command Prompt with Administrator rights, and executing "bfsvc.exe %windir%\boot /v"
      That said, as with all Bitlocker things, before playing, make sure you're system is backed up, and that you have your Recovery Key somewhere other than the PC itself! I've not seen it mandated, but suspending Bitlocker encryption could be worthwhile to discourage Windows from asking for the Recovery Key.
      I hope that helps.
