Switzerland (along with the west of Norway) is the most beautiful place I've ever visited. Safe, clean, high living standards, and pristine nature within a short drive of cities that manage to marry medieval architecture and modern functionality into one. Nowhere in the world is perfect, but Switzerland comes pretty damn close. I can't wait to go back.
(This post was not sponsored by the Swiss Tourism board)
Plumbings a nightmare though! 😂 (Good point wifey!)
I'm swiss and a tell you, thank you, your right
Swiss here (from the Canton of Bern). I highly recommend visiting Switzerland for the scenery, but it also features some cool museums and a lot of history. It is a pretty touristic country (and has been for like 150 years) so there is a lot of infrastructure, guides and so on for tourists and English is very widely spoken, so don't worry about that. There are much too many beautiful scenic places to name so I will not but definitely plan on spending most time in the mountains. However also the midlands/Swiss plateau (which are more hilly than the name suggest) and the cities offer lots of stuff to visit. For example the cities of Bern, Lucerne or Geneva, smaller towns like Murten too. All depends a little on your interests and priorities. The limiting factors are mainly time and especially money since Switzerland is a high income high price country which can get very expensive very fast. Using hostels (Jugendherberge) or mountain huts / lodges (such as the Swiss Alpine Club) can offer a unique dive into the country at a pretty low cost. Regarding safety be advised that Switzerland has a pretty liberal philosophy and will not put nets and fences everywhere you can fall or take you by the hand. In touristic places obviously we discourage dangerous behaviour because most of the people who drown in our rivers and lots of people who needlessly die in the mountains are foreigners who underestimate nature. But most stuff is not banned, it's just left up to your own discretion. If you feel secure enough go hiking, try mountaineering (maybe hire a certified guide) and if you're good swimmers, go for a swim in the lakes and rivers (such as the Aare), river swimming is a part of contemporary Swiss culture. The Swiss can seem very distant to foreigners but will be happy to help and give advise when asked. So if you're unsure, just visit the tourist office or ask someone standing around. If you have specific questions or are seriously planning a trip I'll be happy to advise further and more specific. Entry into Switzerland doesn't differ a lot from the rest of Europe in general, but you will probably need to prove that you will leave again and have the money to sustain your time as it is in many places. :) Also: Before you come, learn a little about Switzerland and Swiss culture. For example, allemannic "German-speaking" Swiss don't speak standard German but some sort of local Swiss German dialect which is very far from German and generally not understood by Germans. Neither Zürich nor Geneva are the capital. De jure Switzerland doesn't have a capital, de facto it's Bern. The linguistic groups are not Germans, French or Italians, they are Swiss. Both in culture and mentality as well as history. Avoiding those common mistakes will spare you upsetting locals :) Maybe also check out the Geography Now episode about Switzerland and/or contact me, I'm enthusiastic about my home and happy to share.
Great thing about Switzerland is how easy it's to see so much by train, a great relaxing way to see the country. Went in 2019, need to go back.
Switzerland is like a full-size train set you can see a lot from the train
I moved to Switzerland a couple of years ago (from the UK), there's definitely no shortage of beautiful places to visit here. Best options for visiting are to get the swiss pass and it will cover transport on trains, trams, busses, ferries and give discounts on the gondolas/cable cars during a your trip. Then you can stay somewhere central and travel each day somewhere new. It was a shame the guy in the video pronounced most of the names wrong lol but it doesn't really matter and almost everyone speaks English so language is never a problem for the swiss.
20 years in switzerland and I still think its a dream
We moved to Switzerland 2 years ago, there are so many more beautiful places, beautiful in different ways and seasons. I’ve been sightseeing almost every weekend and during 6 weeks of yearly vacations and still have a giant list of places to see.
Yea would love to move there! Just don't know exactly how.
I went to Kandersteg with my school in the late 60s. We went for a day trip to Stresa a town and comune of about 5,000 residents on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, about 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest of Milan. It is situated on road and rail routes to the Simplon Pass. One of my nieces lives in Zug. Her children have a Canadian for a teacher.
You’re right when you said that Switzerland is not only place to have such beautiful mountains. However, the way they have made these mountains accessible to people is what stands out. Come visit and I will happy to show you guys around - From a fellow mountain person also a foreigner living in Switzerland 🇨🇭 😂
As a guy coming from Switzerland i am really honored
I'm from Switzerland. Of course the alps (that's the name of the mountain range) always takeall the spotlight but there are a lot of other beautiful places, especially in the northern part (I'm from the north west, near the city of Basel).
If you visit, definitely check out the canton of Jura, great for hiking. There are also a lot of horses there.
Also don't miss out on Lake Constance (Bodensee). It's really beautiful there.
If you love mountains then when you're in the UK you have to visit my neck of the woods in the Scottish Highlands! The most jawdropping mountains I've ever seen though are the Dolomites in Northern Italy. The Bavarian Alps are also amazing, and I'd assume all the other parts of the alps are similarly beautiful. Switzerland is stunning but also eyewateringly expensive - when I get there to visit I plan to stay in Austria and daytrip in because it is so expensive! There's also beautiful mountains elsewhere like in Norway, or the Pyrenees.
In Germanic languages, Ws are more like Vs and Js are more like a Y.
He also missed the Reichenbach falls, famous for where Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty had their fatal meeting.
Yes indeed, , this a great guide to eviscerating the Ger,man, French and Italian languages :0) 'Did I get that right?' he ask. No, you got it spectacularly wrong, considering you lived there for 2 months...

Beautiful country with some very big, hard to access mountains. Even seeing the range from an aeroplane takes your breath away. Mother Nature did a phenomenal job.
Switzerland is very beautiful, but very expensive!! VERY good train system, as a tourist you would use it more than buses or coaches. LOTS of cable cars and overhead gondala systems too, some VERY high from the ground! The building on the Jungfraujoch is called the Sphinx, and i believe that as well as having an observation platform for tourists it also has an observatory. Snow all year around, very odd standing in the snow in August when it is very warm and sunny in the valley below! if you are staying more that a few days you really do need to get a Swiss Half price travel card. it is not that cheap to buy, but when you make a lot of journeys by train over the course of your stay you will probably save more than it costs. Geneva is a nice city, very near France. You can actually use it as base to day trip to places in France like Chamonix or Annecy. I actually prefer the Austrian Tyrol. The scenery there is identical to the Swiss Alps, but I always found it a bit more affordable. I also found the local people in Austria to be more friendly to tourists. You wont be disappointed visiting either country ! Just bring plenty of money! [But visit Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland First ! We would love you to visit!]
Half price travel card is a very sound advice.
Two lengthy trips savings cover the extra cost.
Hello Ethan and Wifey. I have been there by coach and train. The roads and railways are amazing. I stayed most in Lucerne (please look it up).
I grew up among hills and used to get disoriented in flat areas.
P.S. I felt I should mention a boy from my street as a kid, who as a young adult jumped off a waterfall into a pool and died.
I’ve been on several trips to Switzerland, one trip I would recommend is the Glacier Express train ride from Zermatt to St. Moritz. This is an 8 hour 181 mile trip, not fast but extremely scenic. This is however an expensive trip. For a landlocked country the Swiss pride themselves that their ferries, trains, buses are all synchronised and on time, after all they are famed for their watches.
the bridge 14 metres high
Water is normally between 14 and 18 degrees.
There are mountains all over Europe!
The Scottish Highlands, the Scandinavian Range incl. west Norway w. fjords!!
The Alps, the Pyrenees, & my favorite mountains, the Dolomites!
There are so many ranges, the Carpathians, the Caucasus, the Apennines - take a step and begin to wander!
hello from Denmark 🌸 🌱
I live in switzerland and the pronunciations in the reacted video triggered me xD
also, ofc we have mcdonalds.
I've visited Switzerland on two occasions, my favourite place is Interlaken, which is a couple of hours from Zurich. The reason I loved it was because it was a fantastic place to do lots of outdoor/ adrenaline activities. Additionally. It's beautiful, and has lots of nice places to eat and drink.
I backpaked all over the Western US mountains starting at 17...so I sympathize with Ethan stuck in flat AF Kansas. I understand dude....I live near Chicago now and with life I haven't been able to get back to west for over 3 years ☹
I live in the English lake District, which has hundreds of mountains and incredibly beautiful scenery lakes and valleys. I've also been to Scotland many times hiking and I agree with Sue that the Scottish mountains are spectacular and bigger than in the lakes, amazing and beautiful also.
I've also been to Switzerland, and the mountains there are bloody massive. It's difficult to describe or even show them off in a photo without looking up and seeing them with your own eyes. You should definitely go if you get the chance. Take a lot of money though as Switzerland is bloody expensive eg. About average is £10 for a pint of beer more in touristy places.
The Lakes are stunning too, I need to spend more time there!
I had a holiday staying in Wengen and went along the Lauterbrunnen valley to look at the waterfalls .There is one where you go inside the mountain and follow the tracks down beside the fall all the way ,until it emerges close to the road .
The best way to travel around is by train ,VERY punctual ,except on my visit ,when the main line train was delayed and they had to hold the last train up to Wengen ,no other way to get there .BEWARE if travelling by train ,there are machines on the station platforms where you must validate your ticket before boarding the train, otherwise the conductor will charge a fine
I've been to Lauterbrunnen, beautiful place, and walked along the valley floor. There is a tourist attraction of waterfalls that are inside a mountain - they've created caves over the millennium - further along the valley. Then you can take the cable car up to Murren and maybe Piz Gloria. Its a fabulous country and so beautiful, it is an expensive country though.
Switzerland is lovely. We've skied around the Matterhorn from Italy. The Alps are unique and gorgeous in every direction. Ah, memories. When will we be able to travel without restrictions again? Can't wait.
I spent Christmas in a log cabin in the mountains around Zermatt in 2006. It was cool waking up to the scenery on Christmas day. However I had a banging headache the whole time I was there due to the altitude.
I thought you were gonna say you had the headache due to all the party and drinking the night before🤣
I lived & worked in Switzerland many years ago and as a UK citizen I needed a work permit to stay in the country full time. I don't know if this is still the case. You can live there if you have a few million in the bank. I lived overlooking Mt Blanc and it is very impressive but after awhile it is just something in the background that was there every morning when I opened the blinds.
Have to say one of the best things about living in Europe is how none of these places are far away from eachother.
eg London to Paris 2hrs 30 by train or London to Switzerland 1hr 50 by plane £52
He forget...Lavaux higher in Vevey, that classified by unesco.
Hi from Switzerland, you are a very nice couple and I would certainly love to see you visiting Switzerland one day. However, most places in Ryan's video are some of the most famous tourist spots in Switzerland, which also means that they are much more expensive than many other, equally beautiful places. And this in relation to a country that is very expensive anyway. The Jungfraujoch e.g. is extremely expensive and overrun by tourists. So my advice would be to research some less known places, e.g. by looking into channels by expats. Also, while you're at it, you might research the correct pronunciation of the place names. The way Ryan pronounced them, I would be astonished if he ever managed to get any directions.🤣 Also, (like others wrote before) I would recommend using public transport instead of driving. Even remote valleys can be explored by train and postal car, and often there are tiny gondolas to mountain tops no tourist ever heard of.
Swiss checking in, the pronunciation was the best Haha just that made me laugh hard.
I spent 2 Christmas's in Austria near where they filmed the Sound Of Music. Gotta check out Austria.
I'm lucky enough to be married to a Swiss lass. Her family lives in the North close to the Rhine and German border. (Switzerland has four official languages German, French and Italian, each of which is spoken in regions close to those nations and a gypsy language called Romanche spoken in a small area in the East of the country.)
Though we live here in beautiful Scotland I've been lucky enough to travel all over Switzerland for more than 30 years. It's a stunning and diverse country with some highly unique traditional building styles. What we love most is the Rheinfall - the biggest waterfall in Europe. About 3km from our relatives home. Here's a link to a video since you seem to enjoy waterfalls.
czcams.com/video/zi9YRKzbGwM/video.html
I think you mixed up Romansh and Romani. The names are similar, but they are two completely different languages.
Romani is the gypsy language spoken by the Roma people. It is spoken by a minority all over Europe.
Romansh is, like you said, the fourth official language of Switzerland, but has nothing to do with the Gypsy. It derived from Latin, so it is a romance language like French and Italian.
Visit all the towns and villages around Lake Geneva. Take the railways up into the mountains. Vevey is sweet.
Funny thing, I do plan outdoor events for a job in Switzerland. He was right near a place, a world heritage site, and he missed it. The shores of Lake Geneva are beautiful beyond belief.
And none of my Swiss top ten was in his video.
Many of the recommended places are easily accessible from Lauterbrunnen by train and cable car . One one side of the valley are Wengen , Kleine Scheidegg and up to the Jungfrau . From Kleinne Sceidegg you can take the cable car or to Grindlewald . On the other side is Murren and the Schilthorn . Lake Oeschinen is an easy day trip from Lauterbrunnen by train and cable car . Switzerland is very expensive but you can find bargains . I recommend the HornerPub in Lauterbrunnen , a great small bar with basic rooms and great beer .
correction , TRAIN from Kleinne S to Grindlewald .
I went to Switzerland as a teenager (long time ago), even then I remember it was pretty expensive. As for Coca-Cola, etc. I went to see the Pyramids and the Sphinx in Giza, Egypt and was surprised to see a Kentucky Fried Chicken shop down the road from it. So McDonalds, Coca-Cola, etc. It just gets everywhere.
Haha how he said jungfraujoch killed me 😂😂
The Matterhorn at Zermatt is the mountain pictured on the Toblerone chocolate bars :-) Switzerland is beautiful from top to bottom! This guy is a bit giving a limited view as there are more areas.
Been there many times :-) Hihihih it is a bit silly to make promotion in the clip of having McDonalds at hand ... there is so much more to eat there which is wayyyyyyyyy better.... But everything is incredibly expensive!!!
Mc Donalds, ok let's turn it around, where in the world can't you find anything from Nestle or Nespresso? *grin
But when it comes to food, yes you are right, there is so much more, not only better, much of it also healthier (e.g. the cheese and everything that is made with it like raclette, fondue...)
I have been to Switzerland twice and stayed for five weeks, Lauterbrunnen has a large (for Switzerland) railway station that allows you to travel all over the country more or less, there is a cablecar across from the station which takes you to another railway station, from there you can only travel to a small town called Murren, there are no vehicles except for maintenance around the town (Mann lichen, pronounced with a hard c and no H), the mountain does go higher and is accessible by cablecar, the views from here over to Jungfrau Joch (the J's are pronounced Y's and Jungfrau translates as young miss/female).
Jungfrau Joch is accessible from Lauterbrunnen by train and takes maybe an hour, but the scenery is stunning, you will see a couple of other small towns (also no vehicles allowed) along the way and even houses, the train is the only way to reach them, a 1, 2, 3 week or month pass are available and give access to all trains as far as Interlaken, at Jungfrau Joch you have access to the Eiger, Murren and Wengen (Wengen is pronounced Vengen and as German is one of the four languages in Switzerland most W's are pronounced as V's unlike in the video (many people make this mistake at first), Kleine Scheidegg is the station down to Grindlewald, it is very steep about 1in4 and the train over 100 years old, when using the train sit with your back going down hill, the seats are wooden and polished with use, you will slide off and be sat on the floor with no way of getting up because it is so steep.
I'm happy to tell you more if you wish, but an email address would be a good idea, flying to Switzerland is simple but landing at Berne the Swiss capital is like landing a plane on a helipad, the runway is VERY short and a tad scary because of that, the only other option I know of is Geneva Airport and that will be expensive beyond belief, and a long way to travel by bus or hire car, I hope that this is of some use to you both. Chris :)
*laughs Yes, landing in Bern/Belp certainly feels scary, but it's not even the smallest airport in Switzerland and certainly not the scariest.
But why Zurich/Kloten (even with an integrated train station in the basement) and Basel/Müllhausen are not mentioned as alternatives is beyond me, especially since both, along with Geneva, are international airports.
Junfrau = Virgin 😉
Switzerland is expansive and can be difficult for a longer period.
American passport (blue passport) can travel to Switzerland for a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period without having to apply or obtain a Schengen visa, for exceeding that time you need a visa that could be hard to obtain or resident permit.
Other countries with majestic mountain views, well there are a few, the alps in general or deep fjords along the coast of Norway or Iceland summertime.
Jungfraujoch is actually a huge tourist trap. Sure it is beautfiul but you can find this view all across the alps without having being overly crowded or having to pay 240 franks to get up.
Also, jumping off bridges into water is not forbidden, only if the water you jump into is forbidden to be in. So no, cops won't get him ;)
There are sooo many more places worth to visit in Switzerland! I Hope you will be able to visit for a few month.
By the way, your country has very beautiful places to. I was lucky enough to live in California for 18 month and we travelled a lot. I am still in love with your county.
Greetings from Switzerland
So after skimming through all the comments...
Definitely, Switzerland is worth a trip and as mentioned in some posts, I recommend the reliable public transport that practically goes to the most remote places (on time).
Where to go in Switzerland, the 10 spots are one possibility, but certainly not the only one, you will probably even find one or the other worth seeing on the way to a spot that you have never seen/heard of before.
Switzerland is expensive, yes, definitely, except for the drinking water, which can even be taken from wells (unless marked as "not drinking water"). This is sometimes (depending on the location/region) of higher quality and tastier than any other mineral water that you can buy.
Depending on how old the Jung... building is the globe on top might be a solar. It was a feature of old buildings to build a suntrap on top.
The hemisphere is an observatory (opened in 1937) and staffed year-round. Incidentally, probably the highest "workplace" in Europe.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley ; gorgeous
I propose that an advantage of living in a house or staying in a hotel such that is presented at c 4 minutes in the video is that it`s going to be a long time before one becomes flooded.
Switzerland will blow you away, especially in late Spring, or mid-Winter if you enjoy skiing / snowboarding.
However, take a large suitcase of money with you. It’s one of the most expensive countries in the world. Although, it is possible to do it on a shoestring.
As im watching the video i can look out the window and see the first mountain because i live in Appenzell
😍Switzerland is literally my dream destination it just looks amazing
And I live in switzerland but I sadly don‘t know how you can stay here for a few months but it probably will be very expensive.

You can come here for 3 months with a tourist visa :) but you're not allowed to work with this visa type. for 6 months you can just leave the country for a day and return and get another 3 month tourist visa ;)
u should definitely react to Switzerland- Geography now
I believe Switzerland has very strict laws about who lives there. As military service is, or used to be, a requirement for citizens, it is difficult to make a permanent move there. I was told about this when I was there in 1987, so things may have changed. Breathtaking scenes. We stayed in an hotel at the top of Mount Pilatus. Two gondolas to get there. Almost as good as the Swiss scenery, watching the contrasting expressions of Ethan and Wifey, fun to see.
The cable cars up Mount Pilatus, yes ok, and why don't you mention the cog railway? This one on Mount Pilatus is the steepest in the world.
Should be easy enough to come to Switzerland (I live in Basel) on a tourist visa for three months. It's fairly easy to get around as many people are happy to speak English, at least in the German-speaking part of the country.
Happy to help, should you come here. But be prepared, it's terribly expensive...
Oh, McDonald's is there, trust me (I'm swiss). And thanks Americans for Coca Cola, it's the best thing ever! Also, every corner here is beautiful. This is just a small selection ;)
Switzerland is very pretty yes but fair warning it's the most expensive place I think In Switzerland. Even the MC Donalds . Jeniver is cultural center. If you ski you can ski the matahorn even in simmer. But yes it's very pretty
Its easy to visit switzerland. Just have money in your backpack. Othervise have a friend with a house. If u have a friend u can have a cheap great time here.
His German pronunciation is appalling. You are quite right they are not pronounced that way 😄
Agreed and I don't speak the language. For a guy doing those types of videos he should be making the effort to say the names of places correctly.
Switizerland is REALLY expensive.

But not the highest mountain in Europe, the highest in Europe is Mont Blanc, France.
Highest top place to visit in Schweiz is the Dufourspitze

Seriously? That's quite the offer and very tempting.
Contrary to what the guy whose video you were reviewing said, you do not need to drive to get to anywhere in Switzerland that's worth going to. The public transport there is among the best in the world. Admittedly though, the Jungfraubahn is ridiculously expensive!
I agree that it's expensive, but I think it's worth thinking about how much it costs to create and maintain a track in a place like this. It was opened in 1912, which means there are no modern machines, helicopters or other modern equipment. Facilities at this altitude and in the surrounding area are very complex to maintain, just think of the weather (snow, extreme rainfall) and natural events (avalanches).

Beautiful scenery throughout but I find the guy who presents the video really irritating.
He's an American in Europe, so obviously he's irritating! 😆
welcome to my home country :)
Apart from the 5 min's it'll take of your plane trip learning how to pronounce "J"'s and "W"'s (5 min's too long for most apparently), The main thing for Americans to remember is that if your pilot says over the intercom "Please fasten your seat belts ladies and gentlemen as we'll soon be landing in Stockholm" ..... you've made the typical American balls up of mixing up Sweden with Switzerland! 😂🤦♂️
The second I saw Switzerland I knew they'd talk about Lucerne, so when he skipped it I was like "u wot m8?!". His French ponunciations were fine, but the German ones were just painful. Like Jungfraujoch is pronounced "yoong-fraow-yokh", and Zermatt is "Zerm-ah".

Couldn't finish watching the trailer, it's just religious boring crud.
The guy in the video managed to mispronounce every name
OMG, that guy absolutely BUTCHERED the pronunciation of German place names. No effort made whatsoever!
He butchered British place names, so I wasn't suprised by what I heard in this video.
@@SMlFFY85 -It's not rocket science. "J" = "Y" and "W" = "V"! I don't think even Americans have to go to college for 5 years to learn that!
Switzerland is weird. Can't decide if they're French, German or Italian.
Also, despite having more guns per capita than the USA, their postal workers nor school pupils go on rampages.
Probably not for Americans... 😜
Well, after completion of mandatory military service, they can buy their guns they've used and take them home....where they're usually dumped into a cupboard or drawer and never touched again!
Neither Germans nor French nor Italians understand us... because we are Swiss.
Why should we riot because we are unhappy with the government? Then it would be our own fault, because we would have the democratic means to take action against it without weapons.
