It is more that ten yars now that the Alban Berg Quartet retired. They were an excellent team and are still missed. It is wonderful to have this video.
First time hearing this specific cycle, and found it randomly by typing in "string quartet 8" because I wanted to find something that I figured was lesser known. Came right after hearing La Passionata (Appassionata) and didn't know that they were distantly related. Still new to listening to the longer, non-restrained symphonies, quartets, opuses, and the like. An ever rewarding expirience.
Now this is my favorite quartet by the great Ludwig. It's the most consistent, the least diffuse, there are great tunes and its vigor is just overwhelming.
This quartet is certainly worthy of such high regard; it's fast becoming a favorite of mine. I love how in the first movement the recapitulation emerges out of the closing figure at the end of the development.
02:06 : reprise 04:09: développement 25:56 : thème russe (Slava) Boris Godounov scène du couronnement 31:00 : quatrième mouvement rondo thème en do majeur 35:51 : dernière apparition du thème en do majeur
Thank you for the time stamps. I like to dig into whole works, but sometimes I'm looking for a specific theme. (You know the one! I was trying to compare it to an semi/demi haiku that I'd been read by my Special Lady/Lady friend, and couldn't find it until I saw this post... she liked it a lot. Cheers!)
Why so fast? Sounds like virtuoso piece. Middle section of 3d movements is a famous theme of procession with gonfalons in honor of tzar but sound like cheerful dance. I respect Alban Berg quartet, one of my favorites, but this piece a little disappointment.
The theme of the middle section of the 3rd mouvement is in fact a russian folkloric weddind song. Musorgsky used it for quite another purpose, in his "Boris Godounov". Of course this song is somewhat "processional", but nothing to do with royal court pomp.

It's a good favourite! It's hard for me to pick a favourite haha I listen to 1, 5, 7-16 regularly.

Agree
Wonder if it would've been Zarathustra's favorite?
Sublime--especially the second movement. Thank you!
Bravo, extraordinary playing. Great Quartet.
An outstanding performance. Bravo!
Gracias Alban Berg .Enriquecen mi espíritu con los cuartetos de Beethoven.
die drei Quartette op. 59 immer wieder ein "dicker Brocken" - hier grandios musiziert
Magnificent..
The rhythm of the last movement is very similar to the Colombian musical genre called Pasillo from the end of the 19th century.
That's why I'm here 😅
Chef-d'œuvre !
Good touch! have the adverts run simultaneously with the music. Thanking CZcams for its contribution to Global Garbage.
