  • By special request, here's Mason reprising his hit single on the Smothers Brothers reunion special. Ripped from a beat-up old VHS tape so the quality isn't too good.

    It was 67 or 68 when I first heard this piece. My stomach hurt so bad because this piece was soooo go that it changed my life and off I went to conservatory in Spain to learn how to play classical and flamenco guitar well. I still play this piece as I have since 1968. To me it is still the best guitar solo with orchestra that I have ever heard. It has everything! I wish there were more pieces in the world like this! Thanks Mason!.

    According to Mason Williams online; the song took 3 grammy awards, two of them were for Mason Williams:
    1968: GRAMMY AWARD for "Best Instrumental Theme" Mason Williams, composer
    1968: GRAMMY AWARD for "Best Instrumental Performance", "Classical Gas" Mason Williams, performer
    1968: GRAMMY AWARD for "Best Instrumental Arrangement", "Classical Gas" Mike Post, arranger
    And it was #1 on the CashBox chart (45 sales?) and kept at #2 on BillBoard (radio plays?) because of the Doors "Hello, I love you".

    A timeless classic to say the least. Composing an instrumental that had such enormous impact has been done by very few people. This song is a landmark. It is the most requested song of guitar virtuosos. It showcases guitar chops & is very pleasing to hear. It has drive, energy, & excitement. I was 13 in 1968 when it came out & I've been hooked ever since. Mason did much more than just CG, but he didn't need to. CG alone makes him immortal in time.

    I have seen scores of covers of this majestic piece by some of the greatest guitar players of the last 45 years and each look as if they are struggling to keep up with the pace of the guitar work. Williams makes it look effortless. Considering that he was the head comedy writer for The Smother's Brothers, Andy Williams and others and his other work, the man is undeniably a genius.

  • @coldeb8911
    @coldeb8911 Před 6 lety +23

    This terrific tune was One of the first piece’s I ever learned to play, the genius of it is, it looks more difficult and intricate than it actually is, it can be mastered relatively quite quickly by almost any intermediate player, even less so, and If I can learn it anyone can , it almost plays itself tbh, that’s what made Mason Williams such a brilliant composer!... wonderful stuff...and don’t worry to much about trying to play it verbatim, in fact, I think even Mason Williams played it differently every time he performed it 😂

      Actually, I listened to the 1968 version just before this one, and I'm finding the opposite: he plays it pretty well on the nose - which I think was quite a feat. The orchestra arrangement was a tad different, but Mason pretty well did his part to the note. Probably because of the occasion.

    • @douglasthompson8927
      @douglasthompson8927 Před 2 lety

      almost everyone does it different..it`s almost impossible to find accurate sheet music for it in standard notation..when I started looking for it maybe 10-20 years ago he wanted $40 for the actual transcription which I have to admit seemed at best pretty cheesy..now you can get it for about the same price I think if you buy his songbook which has like 10 other tunes in it..there are 2 " official " versions one as a piano score the other with the chords and melody as well as numerous unofficial tabs online..it is a great song however..turned me on to classical guitar back in 1970 and I`ve played it ever since..not particularly well but it`s part of my personal musical dna..the video was the 1st I ever saw and in my humble opinion the best music video ever made..3000 years of art

    Not only this tune survived to this day. Also the original guitar Mason Williams recorded this tune on,
    a "Cordova" branded guitar but in fact a German Oscar Teller guitar, still in possession of Williams, can
    be admired in one of his video's. As a 17 years old kid I was already fond of this tune and 55 years later
    I was able to buy exactly the same model from the Oscar Teller company, somewhat later (1971) and
    to honour this artist I've recorded Classical Gas on that guitar, once restored to make it playable again.

    I began to record my first album for Warner Bros. " The Mason Williams Phonograph Record" and Classical Gasoline was one of the tunes to be included. On the charts for the session the music copyist inadvertently abbreviated "Gasoline" to "Gas" and so that's how it actually got its title. It wasn't until sometime later that I realized most people were thinking "Gas" as in "Hey man, it's a gas!" --From the Mason Williams website.
