I worked for a coffee company in Nashville during the late 80s. Chet's studio was one of my stops. I walked in one day and Chet and Mark were sitting on a couch picking. After stalling around the coffee bar, Chet said I was welcome to listen. Amazing 30 minutes watching two masters work on a song.

This is brilliant, but then again, both of them usually are! Don't really agree that this is MK at his best. I prefer him when he performs his own songs, he is such a great composer and he is better than anyone I know at enhancing a song with his timing and phrasing. Dire Straits is just a small (but equally great) part of his legacy.

Completely agree. As much as I love Mr. Knopfler as a songwriter and player, my level of respect for him as a person went through the roof when he did this project 'Neck and Neck' w/ Mr. Atkins. I bought the album the day it was released and remains a favorite. I love the sense of lightness and levity. It's just fun.

This is what truly impressive guitar playing sounds like. Not impressing friends and your ability to "solo" in the E pentatonic. It may fool most but this is the real deal. And the fact that it's a finger picked duet they played without rehearsal is just astounding. Chet gets the respect he deserves but poor Mark doesn't! Listen to his choices in notes and voicings during the parts he takes lead. Knopfler is a genius and I'm glad his dream came true to play with his favorite artist Chet!

As a somewhat-respectable (non-pro) guitarist who has truly always loved the instrument and the people who play them ~ I find it amusing when I see headers like 'World's greatest guitarist' and the like. Atkins is one of the greatest pickers of the 20th Century and Knopfler one of the most uniquely-gifted rockers ~ who as one can plainly hear can play way outside of the rock genre. You cannot miss the mutual admiration seen on this clip. What lovely playing!

Youngsters watching this, practice and realize that you will give yourself a gift that no one can take from you. I have a cousin who is older than me.
