Most grade school students would understand the difference. So an adult, someone that would know the difference between Ron and Metta, would know the difference between past tense and present tense and intentionally use it to be disrespectful towards this man and how he represents himself as a man.
Personally, it bothers me when people that make a change in their life that meaningful to them are disrespected. It would be the same as calling Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Muhammad Ali as their abandoned names. It’s not religious but I’m sure it’s still an intensely personal reason or belief to choose a new name as a way to represent yourself. For me, that’s just not something anyone should disrespect.
