Kranj Slovenia | Things to Do on a Day Trip to Kranj

Kranj is the administrative and cultural centre of the Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) region and the fourth-largest city in Slovenia.
Kranj is a city located just 35 minutes away from Ljubljana and 25 minutes away from Lake Bled. The town offers a magnificent view of the Slovenian Alps and boasts a rich history that dates back six thousand years. Kranj is a fascinating mix of culture, history, and nature. The old town boasts a variety of diverse sights, from religious monuments and ethnological museums to modern art spaces. Under the historic town centre, 1300 meters of tunnels were built during the Second World War as a shelter for the people in the city. Even though Kranj is not a large city, it has many attractions.
Here are a few places that are a must if you are travelling through this part of Slovenia:

3. Kokra River Gorge
4. Church of St. Cantianus and Companions

I was there in June on a sunny and worm Sunday. Yes, it has a nice old centre but you have seen everything in 15 min. Besides this it was virtually dead, almost no restaurants.
It is ok for a short stop over between Lake Bled and Ljubljana but not more.

What a great video of a town that most people skip when in Slovenia. I spent 4 nights in Kranj in August/September 2019. It was great! The TI offers a tour through the tunnels under the town -- definitely worthwhile. I also saw the Bosnian band Dubioza kolektiv perform at the castle. I really enjoyed my time in Kranj! Thanks for bringing back so many memories!
