There's some valid complaints here, like the Switch performance and the equipment swapping, but a lot of them seem like positives to me, or at least not the negatives you make them out to be. As someone who's been missing the oldschool style of rpg, this seems like it'd be up my alley.
Random battles are not inherently bad, and I appreciate that the game doesn't create a checklist for you where it tells you where all the heroes are and how to recruit them. That sounds like a list of chores if anything. I always like when a game doesn't handhold you.

I have watched many reviewers saying negative things about this game, do they know why the game is being made in the first place? I havent had any performace issues, and thought the encounter rate was kind of low. It actually made grinding new characters take longer than older JRPGs because the game MIGHT give you 1-2 encounters going straight through an area. Thankfully there is an accessory that bumps up the rate (and one that bumps it down to practically no encounters). Perhaps his memory is on a particular castle near the end of the game that DOES INDEED have a higher encounter rate.....But it wasnt so bad as "Step-fight-two steps-fight" like old games used to be. Personally random battles don't bother me regardless. But I thought it was odd after playing it and realizing how low the rates were compared to older titles.

I also had that same thought. This game emulates everything I love about Suikoden. Random battles, castle building, party recruitment and large scale tactic style battles. There wasn't any tracking of allies in Suikoden and I loved it. It made you have to revisit places to try and find those missing characters.
It is odd that he says he likes Suikoden and not this game while insulting every element that is the exact same. Maybe he's playing too many first person shooters and has forgotten what RPGs are all about.

  • @densha63
    @densha63 Před měsícem +10

Not really sure but this is a spiritual successor of Suikoden and it takes heavily on those aspects. So if you haven't played the Suiko series previously and going blindly, then and found yourself not loving this, then this game is not for you. And when did dungeon crawling became oh so easy? Lol, even the encounter rate seems mid or lower compared to Suikoden and what's with "random encounter rate leaving it back to the 90's"...well that's why the game is a nod to "old school JRPGs" at its finest. and what's fairly boring and lifeless? I look at it as vibrant and colorful. I'm not really sure if this is a review or just a rant. Simply put, the reviewer does not give a lick or even played Suikoden before as the comparison stems from other JRPGs which was not the point on why this game was made and why it is called a "spiritual successor" and interestingly enough, the developers are previous Suikoden developers, so go figure. Truthfully, a very very very bad review.
PS: The only thing that I will agree is the Switch performance.

Random battles are not a negative, it's a gameplay mechanic that's still used in highly praised RPGs.
Recruits & recruitment requirements being hidden instead of a checklist is a positive for people who like secrets & figuring things out themselves, that sort of thing is also what gets people talking about a game long after its release.
I agree with the complaint that you have to put characters in your party to swap out equipment, rather than being able to do it in the party formation list. I think to avoid having to do that so much you should remove all equipment from your active party members before benching them.
Just like with Suikoden, you're not expected to use all 100+ heroes, so upgrade who you want to actually use.
On the topic of Switch performance, was there supposed to be footage here that had framerate drops? Because I didn't see any.
If there were crashes, framerate problems, load screen problems etc., then you really should include footage of it rather than just saying it.

You can clearly see where we are these days. many people don´t understand the sould behind games anymore. They are so focused on graphical things (that the not understand artstyle decisions). Rise of the Ronin for example is a great game for what it is. But you see people more complaining about the graphics (and tbh it looks good)or comparing it with GoT (which is a differnet type of game) than speaking about the gameplay itself. I mean, of course, everyone´s taste is different... but it feels like many can no longer see the games for what they want to be.
I´m sure many of the kickstarter people are happy. I never played Suikoden. But i will buy it, because all points are my taste. I like the more classic and basic aspects. Random battles are maybe a thing. But i heard that it is moderate. Otherwise everything about it looks interessting to me. So many characters that you can insvite. Story and a tactical turned base combat system. I also like the older Persona 4 Golden for example and the dungeon crawling "souls like" and had no problem with the more "outdated" and classic gameplay. So i´ll give it a try. I personally like also interactive combat systems (like FF16), but tbh you find too many of them these days. I prefer turn based combat.
Edit: looks like the Switch Port is really bad. So PS5 it will be then

It was like every part of the game was designed to waste my time. I hate how slow and sluggish these "retro" JRPG's feel. You walk two seconds only to be bobared by unnecessarily long dialogue.
Walk another two seconds, random battle. Then you see what looks like a puzzle you want to solve yourself. NOPE! Enter another few rounds of cutscenes that could have been one shortened one. But noooooo. It lets you have control again, only to take it from you another two steps. And, of course, it plays ANOTHER round of exposition right before you can trigger the save point.

@@Ghisteslohm139 they are not flaws - a lot of what was pointed out was by design in this game. It’s the same as complaining about Dark Soul’s difficulty when it’s made to be difficult. Felt uninformed on the source material and what the fans are looking for in this game.

@@superblanco444 well I discuss what the reviewer said , if you played the game and you say it's fine , that's good . Unfortunately the '' play the game and have your own opinion '' is not that easy anymore due to cost issues .
Also if you want my opinion ,random encounters ARE outdated . The fact that I love jrpgs does not mean that I accept everything they have to offer and random encounters is definitely something that I am tired of ,especially when they occur every few seconds .
Recently I played etrian odyssey 1 hd again and in the later levels there was literaly one random encounter every 8-10 tiles that I walked . It was frustrating to say the least but I could excuse it because the game was old . In a new game .... Well not that much even if the selling point is mimicking an older title
