We DNA test three Doberman Planet viewers' dogs and uncover what surprising secrets are locked away inside their DNA! In this Embark reveal video, we health test these Dobermans and have a Veterinarian and Canine Geneticist reveal the results LIVE to our three families! This process can be an emotional one and the results revealed in this video to our families are no exception! Dobermans have several significant breed health issues and DNA health testing for this breed is extremely important. It can uncover things such as Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM, a heart disease) markers, von Willebrand's disease (vWD, a bleeding disorder) markers, their inbreeding levels which are directly linked to their longevity, nearby relatives, personality traits, and so much more. If you haven't already, this should be your wake-up call to finally get your Doberman DNA health tested!

DCM - what a heart breaker. 3 weeks ago I lost my big beautiful boy to this. He was 10 years old and a very active farm dog with 7 buddies to run with. The symptoms came on quickly and within 3 weeks he died in my arms. He was a large, lean fawn color at 110 pounds and a very loving devoted friend. He is desperately missed

My 5-1/2 year old European Doberman ‘Loki’ presented symptoms of DCM last week. The vet provided meds and advice but warned me Loki wasn’t likely to live longer than six months. We are all heartbroken but committed to this breed (Loki is our second Doberman, Duke made it to 11 years) and already thinking about getting another. Loki was advertised as having been tested but clearly we weren’t curious enough about what that actually meant.
John, you are a saint for this breed and future owners. Because of your videos, starting four years ago about the breeds’ vulnerabilities I just ordered an Embark kit for Loki so his info can get entered into the genetic database.
When the time comes to begin the puppy search, we will be way more tuned in than in the past. John, I think you mentioned a list of ‘certified’ breeders but haven’t found that yet. If you could provide a link, it would be greatly appreciated. And thank you for all you do and have done to educate owners and promote this fantastic line of truly the finest canines that exist! Best to you and yours.

Thank you so much for this channel! It was through you that I learned how informative the Embark DNA test is. I did it on my blue Doberman, Bella, last year. I was, like most Doberman owners, anxious about DCM markers. It was a huge relief to learn that she does not have either DCM markers, although she does have two copies of Von Willibrand gene. Again, thank you for all the information and tips you share. ❤

We did the DNA test on our girl, Bala. I was worried about seeing any disease markers. Sure enough, the only thing that came up was that her ALT level is low, which after talking to our vet, isn't a bad thing. We also learned that she is 6.2% Rottweiler and not a pure bred Doberman. She's still our baby girl!

We got our girl from a friend who had puppies. No cost to us. Another friend got one of her sisters. His vet jumped to the conclusion that his girl had willebrand and said that she shouldn't get fixed. I told our friends that he should find another vet to do it because our girl doesn't have the markers, so chances are his doesn't either. I encourage every dog owner to get this test because of that!

So happy for Apollo great that you found a good breeder. A sign for DCM is drinking a lot of water and slimy water, 5 years old when died dish, a month before he took a turn for the worst he was in for his yearly check up and the vet said how good he looked my other Doberman was over 10 no signs . My 10 year old north American Doberman the breeder did not care said was a good age, My 5 year old European Doberman the breeder was no longer in business after 7 years but her dogs had DNA testing all good but she left a lot of heart break. My Vet. was extremely happy that I had these tests done and can provide the best care for my Doberman's. Embark made it very easy with an excellent report to me as well as my Vet.

Great video. We did Embark tests on both our rescue Dobie and our breeder-bought Dobie. On Ross, our rescue, I was not surprised to learn that he is really only 97% Doberman as I suspected to find him to be more German Pinscher than Dobie because of his appearance. I was shocked, though, that his little rat in the woodpile was GSD, not German Pinscher. On our breeder bought female, the breeder claimed to have had both parents and the pups tested and that she had one copy of the DCM1 gene. Embark confirmed that the info we had been given by the breeder was accurate, so that was good. Of course we never intended to breed her, but we are informed so that we can be watchful.

Great video, after having 2 Dobermans I'm glad you are making this information known. I will say the last part about being purebred and everyone on the video being relived their Doberman was 100% Doberman was concerning. I have a rescue and he is likely at least 50-75% Doberman and he displays more natural Doberman traits than any purebred Doberman that I have ever owned. For example naturally guarding hallways and rooms where kids are playing. Its really odd, but true and he's the best guard dog without any training. I think instead of celebrating the purebred Doberman you should look into possible hybrid combinations with other dogs.

My dobie is 2.5 years old. I purchased him from a breeder that had done the heart testing for the male she breeds. We did the embark testing and learned our boy is a carrier of DCM2. I also learned that the breeder also did the embark test prior to breeding her male(my dobies dad). I thought it was best to let her know our results. Needless to say she informed me her male is also a carrier of the DCM2 gene. This information was not provided to us prior to purchasing our Doberman. She still continues to breed this same male and it really bothers me because she doesn’t disclose the testing. Should breeders disclose dna results or should they only disclose heart testing results? We will start doing all of the heart testing for our Doberman because at his two year check up the vet could hear an arrhythmia while listening to his heart.

This breed (and others) could easily improve the quality of future generations (health and longevity) by enforcing strict testing as part of formal kennel registration. No test, no registration and no show. It really is that simple - but - unfortunately the powers that be are not ranking dog health as number 1. This requires government legislation and forced change.
