This man in his prime was something else. Can score tap ins, bangers, free kicks, over head kicks. Can lay a pass like great Midfielders, can assist, can track back, can play on the wing, can play as a No. 10, can play in Middle, can lead, was aggressive and then went cool. Was a complete team player, any manager's dream player.
The modern Manchester United wouldn't have been the same without him.
Unfortunately, the current crop of fans won't know about his greatness.
81729443 still top scorer for England, right? Gonna go look for where he ranks in MU all time goals..
Julian Walker 1st for man utd
@@JAYDUBYAH29 Top scorer for Manchester United and England. 2nd in Premier League.
@@81729443 that's what i thought...
81729443 amazing, where is CR7 in that ranking?
The complete forward. One of the greatest of his generation yet never gets the respect he deserves.
Was (un)fortunate enough to be English, be world class and play for United - all three combined meant he was hated by the gutter press and the morons who read it (being most football "fans") who were and are jealous of his success.
Yes
In ly opinion Rooney> Benzema
@@nascolav9204 and it's a very popular opinion as well.As much hate Rooney might get,no one absolutely no one says Benzema is better than Rooney.
@@nascolav9204 isnt that obvious, Rooney is the leader of the attacking line creating chances while Bezema just wait for the ball.đ€đ€.
He sacrificed himself for the club. Had he played in his favourite role all the time he would have scored way more goals and created many records
So true
Very true. Unlike Shearer though he chose trophies over individual accolades
@@inBODwetrust13 true
Sacrificed himself? He didnât even look after himself? Couldnât even go gym and eat healthy for hundreds of grand a week! Was a great player but should of looked after himself , Ronaldo is older then him ffs!

He was 2 World Class Players in one.
Made me fall in love with the Beautiful Game.
Idol. Icon. Legend.
Remember the name... Wayne Rooney. My Captain â€ïž
He can change his playing style for his playing position. What a player Manchester United have.
Rooney is greater player than most people realised.
Unbelievably gifted footballer. As my favourite player growing up, I studied him more than most. He was one of the very few players who could do everything, although this was ultimately his downfall as it resulted in him being played everywhere. He deserves more respect, an all time great of the English game.....
Regarding the 2011 UCL final. Rooney was dropping deep and marking Busquets, but Sir Alex told him to stop. I remember this very vividly. He screamed at Wazza to stay forward for the counters, because Park and Valencia were tucked in to compensate for Barcaâs dominance in the middle. I dont think Rooneyâs defensive contributions can ever be criticised. His only problem was that he sometimes focused on defending too much, because he did not trust his teammates.
I remember fergie telling him âIâm in charge hereâ while he was giving him instructions on the sidelines. Rooney is a strong minded character, and he had a bad habit of challenging fergieâs authority.
Ankle Socks yep. Feel like Sir Alex expected Wazza to be a 100% ride or die like Giggsy, Scholesy etc. and never really forgave Wazza for that transfer request. Crazy to imagine that if Wazzaâs career at United was saved by David Moyes because Iâm certain that Sir Alex wanted to sell him to Chelsea.
@@YMY_1999 No, Sir Alex denied his transfer request when he was leaving. He made it clear while leaving that Rooney was going nowhere (in case you forgot, Rooney made a 2nd transfer request when Sir Alex retired).
Chelsea was one of the interested team but he signed a new contract under Moyes.
Yassin M. Yassin Fergie really loved him like a son, so itâs a bit sad to see how theyâve fallen out. Rooney just never knew how to stay in his lane
Thanks man. I remember Rooney being defensive at his time at United
Wayne Rooney played in every position just for the love of badge, his contribution to Manutd is immense. A true hero & legend.
Manutd will never get a player like ROONEY!
#legend #master
As a chelsea fan i was always intrigued by Rooney. Wanted to see his tactical profile. And how he adapted anda changed over time.
Rooney is a legend of the game, the most talented english player Iâve ever seen, none of that lampard, gerrard and scholes business.
Rooney was a beast player in his prime.
He was Athletic
Just like this vidâs sponsor
An iconic player, but what are your favourite Rooney memories?

Rooney inspired millions of fans like myself to watch football and support MUFC
He is a legend â€
The problem was that he was good everywhere and the managers didn't know where to play him, Even Sir Alex didn't...
GENERATIONAL TALENT
Eyyy rooooneey!! I learned here that he is a second striker or cam(similar to griezmann) who can play wing occasionally (had to adjust for Ronaldo) Nice vid, Maybe do reus next
Not just ronaldo mate, rooney always adjust to every striking partner, only in 2009/10 he become a main man. Sadly he was injured badly n man utd lost the game againts bayern. He then never perform the same again through out his career yet at that season he still scored more goals than cr7 at the time
I really was hoping for to see his impact on DC United when he came to the MLS. He really did a great job transforming the team in the short time he was here, and I enjoyed getting to see him play.
Rooney is always my most favourite player of all time. Thanks for making this great video and for me Rooney was a complete forward at his prime
For his prime years he was the heart and soul of our play.
Man Utd legend, â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
As an Arsenal fan, he was an absolute beast who can cause problems from any part of the pitch.
I think his issue was he grew old at a time when Man Utd were declining.
If Man Utd was still at the peak, he could probably play a role like how Scholes and Giggs did at Man Utd (and a 36 yo Bergkamp did at Arsenal) where others did the running for him.
Can you do a video on why england have failed in international tournaments? Really want to see your take on it
Rooney's capacity to play the 10 role was dependent on his pace and energy. Once that waned, the logical choice should have been to keep him up front.
Rooney was always prone to the odd goal drought here and there. But if allowed to play his through it, he'd always emerge as a goalscoring beast. I'm sad that coaches saw fit to use him as a utility player instead of just letting him be a forward.
In 2009/2010, Rooney did what very few strikers are ever able to do. And that was acquiring a natural goalscorer's instincts. Normally, stuff like that is a sense that is extremely difficult to coach into someone.
But like I said, he got deployed on the wings, center mid, or defensive mid.
I honestly feel like he could have had a good three more years at united as a forward if they played him in the right position. Yes, he didn't have the pace of Rashford or the unbelievable feet of Martial. But he was a much more composed and versatile finisher than Rashford and got involved in the game more intelligently than Martial.
Just my personal opinion though.
My favorite player of all time đ. Gave his all for the badge and showed what it meant to be a club legend
The only article on The Athletic that I've ever disliked. Rooney was never a defensive liability. Utter nonsense. He was blasted by SAF in his younger years for tracking back too far and therefore being out of position when United inevitably won the ball back and wanted to break. Rooney won it all at club level and was one of the very best players in the world.
His main issue and stain on his legacy will be the same as it is for every English player - aggressive journalists. One of the best to ever put on a United shirt and an England shirt. Not his fault that he was much younger than VDS, Vidic, Rio, Giggs, Scholes, Carrick and Van Persie. Not his fault that Fergie retired. Not his fault that he was younger than Gerrard and older than Alexander Arnold. His career was entirely circumstantial. He ended up playing on bad teams for United and England under poor managers for a few years which happened to be the period that journalists have decided is a player's 'prime'.
Such is journalism, if a player doesn't spend those years at the top of the game, they've somehow wasted their career. Journalism only recognises the most simplistic of career arcs and wants to put everything else down to a personal fault. Maybe he should just have ignored his incredible vision and passing ability and just played up front for five years so that journalists could suggest that it was a lack of service that was the problem.
Respectfully disagree, but he was at defensive liability towards the end of his England career (at least, idk about United so i cant say)
Euro 2012: didn't track Pirlo in the QF vs Italy, allowing him to dicate play and dominate possession
WC 2014: Hodgson has to put Rooney out wide and Sterling through the middle bc he knows Rooney wont track Pirlo. Italy overwhelms England on Rooney's side
Euro 2016: Rooney is now a CM and his lack of positional sense is a factor in Iceland's 2 goals. Granted England were shite all over, but Rooney has a part in the blame
Rooney made me fall in Love with Man U. And during that time, more and more EPL games started to come on tv in America, which made it even better. GLORY, GLORY, GLORY MAN UNITED-from America!!
For me it's down to SAF that rooney didn't stayed in his PRIME ... PRIME ROONEY was phenomenal absolutely a generational talent ... For eg look how Messi and CR7 were nurtured at their respective clubs and how wayne was played out of position again and again and had to ADAPT rather then played in his own position ....
How was Rooney not good defensively? Did you really see him play? His sacrifices on the pitch and everything.
I was thinking same
Go watch the video again and this time pay attention
It's not just about effort you need to have discipline, not be drawn out of position, know when to press a player and when to stand-off. I'd say Rooney was a willing defender rather than a good defender
@@sreddi83 It's senseless to judge an elephant of its inability to climb a tree.

This was amazing!
man, the athletic is everywhere
Love the thumbnail!
Complete footballer.
heâs the best english player to ever kick ball btw
Played as a cam when needed, played as cm when needed, played as a cdm when needed, played as a ss when needed, played as a striker when needed, hiding those teary eye, silently left when needed
Put some respect in his name. He was amazing at tracking back and creating play. In his United Prime he was a great goalscorer AND creator, by the end of his United career he was a type of Scholes with amazing long passes and still many goals in him, too bad tactics and players around him didnât favor him.
love intro
Wow! can you make a tactical evolution of Andrea Pirlo? Or maybe about the partnership between Pirlo and Gennaro Gattusso? I wan't to really really know if Andrea Pirlo contributed in defence
Rooney would have thrived in current dortmund setup as a false 9 in my opinion with sancho and reus or even brandt or thorgan would provided him : just a thought
Please make a video on Hakim Ziyech. Lampard said to solve creativity issues and also please make a detailed video on what he brings.
Can you make a video on Barcelona's tactics under Luis Enrique please
Some false points. Rooney was dropped v Madrid in 12/13 because he fell out with Fergie.
As an England fan, I gotta say Rooney's international career is probably one of the most frustrating ever. We all know he tore up Euro 2004 but after that:
2006: is half fit, just coming back from an injury. Gets a red card
2008: Fit, coming off a great season, but England miss the Euros
2010: Coming off his BEST indiv. season, but is again injured and barely fit for the World Cup
2012: Another great season and is fit this time! But suspended for the first 2 games and never really looked in form
2014: Fit, good season and has the side based around him! But sadly, he is a little past his prime now. Misses a few chances as England go out in the group stages
2016: By now, his legs are gone. Even the clueless Hodgson knows Kane, Vardy & Sturridge are all better options as ST, so Rooney gets shoved into midfield. His passing is good, but too slow as England dominate possession but never create too much.
Rooney retires a year later and England go onto their best tournament place in 20 years.
From being overrated at the beginning of his career to now becoming one of the most underrated
Oh, come on. He kept playing. He's still playing.
He is the best player ever for England and Manchester United đđą
Young rooney was a beast, he was something else. Only striker than was compared to pele, just imagine
Legend of the game
Tactical analysis on Claudio Makelele please
Can you do Hassan flicks Bayern tactics
1. Rooney never lost his link up ability, no idea why thats even included as hes been Uniteds best provider post Fergie and pre Pogba. He had 12 assists in the Moyes season.
1st season under LVG: play CM and across attack until midway through season where he is the outright 9.
2nd season under LVG: play striker first half of season but terrible team quality/football left Rooney isolated and starved of chances so he went back to CM.
Under Jose: Mou tried to play Rooney as a 10 as if it was 2011 again, but it didn't work as he didn't have the legs for the position and with Ibra being a particularly immobile and lazy striker it was just not gonna work.
Drogba next? Then Thierry Henry đ
Rooney was an absolutely class player đ

Kids nowadays dunno how good he wasđŻ
I think the title should be tactical confusion of legendary Rooney
Sorry but Rooneys best position up until he last his pace around the age of 23-25 was the number 9 role but he hardly ever got to play there. Anyone who saw him at Everton and some early performances for England would know that.

lololololololo
In football manager, I am confused on how I am gonna be using him.. as a 9? 10? Playmaker? Trequartista? Cant poach because he is too generous. He has engine but his legs are now deteriorated. He primed way too early
Best position for him is in Centre attacking midfield with second stricker role.
Or you could put him in the stricker position and give him the role of DLF. But he must be partnered with another stricker.
Make a video on messi.
he just retired today, end of a era
was an arsenal fan...it was so unfair that Manchester United had player like him...he was too op back then
You missed him paying with Saha
Tomas Rosicky? 2:02
That isnt Thomas Radzinski thats stephen Naysmith.
Another example of a complete forward
Read this article on the Athletic lol
how can his legs slow down when he was only 25 years old, i mean thats supposed to be his prime
He started veryyy young as owen. Also he used to run anywhere on the field tackle from midfield run to the box, very tiring...
Lucas Lach he played through injuries which affected his career
he was a box2box center forward during his prime , and also enduring premier league's crazy tackles for years and years
Knee injuries destroyed his pace unfortunately
Everton fans didnt see the best of Rooney? I beg to differ. Some of Rooneys greatest and most exciting performances were in an Everton shirt and most people never got to see them as they were not shown on live TV., only a few highlights on the Saturday night got shown. Two of the greatest standout performances i have ever seen from any player was his performances against Blackburn at home and Bolton away. Here are a few grainy images and clips i managed to find czcams.com/video/083f2HHTyqU/video.html
Some how he never scored in either of those games but the closet comparison i can think of to how he played was Maradona in his prime, and i am not exaggerating. After he broke his foot the first time for England before he joined Man Utd he lost a bit of his edge and his aggression and swagger and then Alex Ferguson started playing him out of position and coaching his aggression and risk taking attacking prowess out of his game. So instead of running at defenders like he did at Everton he would play it more safe and pass backwards and took less risks.
I think his private life was affected as well distracted with drinking and partying and instead of riding to the training ground on his bike he began to drive, all this affected his general fitness and explosive power and speed.
Then when he broke his foot the second time when playing for Man Utd against Chelsea he seemed to lose a yard of pace and seemed hesitant to try to run at players where as at Everton everything he did was a positive attacking move, either a shot, a forward pass or run at the defenders. Rooneys performances for England at Euro 2004 were the type of performances he was producing for Everton aged 16 and 17 only he didnt score as many because he had worse players around him. He also played much better up front with a big target man like Kevin Campbell and Duncan Ferguson and even admitted his favorite England strike partner to play with was Emile Heskey. Rooney did not play with that type of striker at Man Utd and so he didnt get to play to his strengths.
Here is what summed him up, it wasnt the goal he scored it was his chip just after it. czcams.com/video/ouEzVhAbMZQ/video.html
Rooney was very similar to messi
Rooney: captain wazza
He had the potential to overcome cristiano.

I think you talked about a different Rooney.
Just to backup my reason for benzema being on the same level as Rooney. Rooney has 310 goals in 743 games over his career. Benzema has scored 322 goals in 669 games
it's not about goal if you ask about same level
Benzema was playing as a striker all hes carrer and always surounded by top clas players where is rooney played half hes carrer as a CAM or CM
Skinhead Rooney was king idc
For me He is On par with Messi Ronaldo.
Most Complete and Selfless Player of all time.
The fans who became Manchester United fans post 2004 mostly because Rooney Ronaldo.
rashford is not worth using his number
From small boi to fat dad
Rooney was robbed in 2011 pushes award and should of been in 2011 team of the year. Imagine Ronaldo stayed, played with prime rooney in 2010 , we would of won many champions league
:)
Rooney is slightly overrated in my opinion. I feel like he is a lot like benzema where he was never the best player in a team but more of a player for the system
If he looked after himself would still be playing. He must of drank more and abused himself more then Manchester United let be known. Ronaldo is older then him ffs!
He's a jack of all trade amd master of nothing...
Iâd say he was more the master of all trades
