  • So, today we are out and about walking in the village and civil parish of Minster Lovell which is located in Oxfordshire. The village is about 4 km west of Witney and is set on the River Windrush. According to the 2011 Census the population was just 1,400.
The village has three public houses, The Old Swan, The White Hart and The Horse & Radish. You can see the Old Swan just as we cross the road by the white car near the beginning of the video. There was a lot of rainfall during the week leading up to the weekend this was filmed hence why a very fast flowing & swollen River Windrush and some big puddles!
The parish church is Saint Kenelm which has the denomination of Church of England. Although the church is thought to date back as far as 1183 it had a complete rebuild during the 15th century. Set back behind the church & the bank of the river is the ruins of Minster Lovell Hall, which is the unusual twist in this video as it is the first time we have walked through a village and onto the grounds of such spectacular ruins. For a more detailed description of the hall please pause the video at the following timestamps, you can also use CZcams's new zoom feature to zoom in to the font if viewing on a smaller device...
    16:10 16:57 18:56 19:56
There are no hidden OAAW logos in this video.
Side note...Upon reaching St Kenelm's church we stumble upon a photo shoot taking place, so whilst trying to give the Tog & crew maximum privacy but whilst also continuing OAAW filming a jump cut in post editing was installed.
    Thanks for walking with me.

Got me fishing-waders on.... been awaiting to see how buildings, roads, etc fair when "docile" Windrush pushed her banks. It's too bad they haven't invented Smell-A-Vision, I just love the rain-earthy-fragrence, don't you? Also the crisp ion-odor just before a storm. Ruins! Thank you, from bottom of me heart for the touchy-feelly closeup tour. It's probably creepy but I rivet to exploring ruins (& wonder if we wernt alone👻). 🤔hmmm, odd the name Lovell is Norman-French for wolf cub. I wonder if William was related to first Duke of Normandy Rollo aka Viking Jarl Holfr ("wolf") who had many'a illigit ie William the (Bastard) Conqueror who became Earl of Chester then a subsidiary of Wales... where spawned me dad's family, leastwise it's family rumor we're of Holfr stock. I could be a stretching it but then again there twas me exact name found on 😂 garbage can behind Wild Hare Pub (& all me dad's brothers did love Lager) 🤔 Internet says, Rollo is surname derived from Latinized Old Norse Hrólfr meaning "famed wolf". Rollo of Normandy. Language:: Germanic; Old Norse; Scottish Gaelic (there be an active Clan Rollo of Scotland / Shetland) What else will you accidentally find out in your wanderings.... You've me rapt attention Sir🕶️.

Good day, Jaclyn. I do very much indeed love that fresh earthy smell, especially in the autumn / winter time. It is mind boggling but also wonderful how many historical connections you have spotted & made whilst you have been out and about walking with me 😀. All very interesting & educational as you are teaching me stuff that I did'nt have a clue about! Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday, Jaclyn. Hope to see you again soon ; . OAAW. Ps...you remember that flash light video (The Devil's Chimney), would you like to see a daylight version of it at somepoint?

Just found this. Have walked the circular walk from Witney to Minster Lovell many times over the years. Still just as beautiful.

Another lovely walk. The ruins near the end are fascinating. To some people they `re just stones, but i see history and mystery in them.

Thanks Eva. Oh yes, definitely more than just stones, I can’t help but ponder & wonder what it would of been like there in its heyday...roaring open fireplaces in the winter, extravagant evening meals and fine wine in the banquet hall maybe dancing afterwards too. Regards. OAAW

Thanks for sharing, OAAW. I'm always amazed how old these buildings are. I can't imagine the type of mortar they use that lasts for centuries of weathering.

Hi Michael, hope your weekend was a good one. They certainly seem to stand the test of time, a real credit to the builders of centuries ago and also it is incredible to think that there may have been residents that were born in the properties and then lived out their entire lives there and then buried in the local churchyard. Speaking of which, the work & hard labour that would of gone into building churches & cathedrals still blows my mind every time I see a place of worship, the intricate stone carvings, the sheer size of blocks of stone, all done with out power tools or hydraulic lifts / equipment many centuries ago. Have a good week & thanks for walking with me. OAAW

Very nice and interesting walk through Minster Lowell.
The village is very beautiful, orderly, almost dressed to the nines!!.
Beautiful houses and some thatched roofs.
The interesting ruins of Minster Lowell Hall, full of memories of the past.
The river is also very present.
    Thank you friend OAAW

I had the pleasure of growing up not too far from where you've done some of your videos. I looked for Minster Lovell, because you were wandering around Burford! It's barely, what, a ten minute drive? I haven't been for a couple years (moved elsewhere) and that be the wettest I've ever seen it, that river is so high! The pub was rather good when I visited a few more years back (it had a nice deal of a pie and a pint for £10) it was rather good. The ruins everyone clambers over, and there's a gorgeous woodland further back you can walk when there hasn't been so much rain. I think I'll do an overnight visit, have to do village walks again. Nothing like it.

Hi, Furisca. Thank you ever so much for your lovely comment. I dread to think how high the river is currently with all the recent rainfall. The woodland sounds intriguing as I do enjoy a relaxing woodland wander. An overnight visit does sound good! Wishing you all the very best.

Lovely! Funnily enough, I was enjoying your walk through the village and was wracking my noggin over where it might be, until you turned the corner and the ruins appeared -- Eureka! I visited there in autumn 2019, but had no recollection whatsoever of the village (which is odd, since it's so pretty). The river was equally high and the the ground boggy as I squelched through the maze of ruins, where I met the church's priest, likewise wandering, and paused for a chat about the history of the place... I find spots like this so poignant -- standing (in what, the basement?) and gazing up into open sky or tree canopy where once loomed a sheltering roof; empty window frames gazing blankly out upon a timeless scene like so many sightless eyes... It humbles while it fascinates. If ever you encounter someone standing motionless, tirelessly musing and gawping up into the clouds in such a place, it may well be me. 😉😂

Hello. Thank you so much for your comment. It must of been wonderful & informative to chat with the priest about the history of the place. The buildings must of been breath taking before their demise as even now the ruins are spectacular...wouldn't it be lovely if we could just step back in time when the area was at its peak and walk around there in an invisibility cloak as people go about their daily business. I will keep a look out for you on future walks :) All the very best to you. OAAW

The row of houses at 03:35 are so beautiful and chocolate box'esc but a shame the cars had to be there. You can imagine the horse and carts that once used to travel up and down the road. At 07:47 and 08:50 you can spot the OAAW's cousin on the floor 😂 but that was a strange photo shoot in the churchyard I wonder what it was for.. Most Haunted? Those were some spectacular ruins in pretty good condition for their age. Excellent walk through some very interesting places with some wonderful views 😄

Hope you have had a good weekend Chris. Sadly one of the downsides to early morning walking is that there are more cars parked up, I always try to imagine also what these locations would of been like many years ago before motor cars became the norm. Are you sure that was OAAW’s cousin? I thought it was his flatmate 😆. Glad you enjoyed this walk and the ruins. Have a good week. OAAW
