@Darko Audio I want to thank you for making me discover this. After your last post on this topic, I bought the license for rooDial, ordered a Microsoft Surface Dial and a basic RPI4 on an impulse. I can’t believe how easy it was to setup. It took less than 15 minutes for the entire process including assembly of the RPI. I just burnt the image to the SD card, plugged in the RPI power and ethernet. Waited 2 min and it appeared in Roon extension. Massive congratulations to rooDial on how easy it is to setup and especially how well it works! Another way to increase the enjoyment of music through ROON.
My experience has been almost exactly the same (it's a little clunky to get wifi to work on the Roo-based Pi the first time rather than wired ethernet). My conclusive view of RooDial's work is however the same as yours: Well done to them! ...A fantastic addition to the usability of my Roon based system connected to an NDX2! Bravo!
Really sold on Roon. Haven't tried it yet though. This Microsoft Dial only will work with the raspberry pi? So is the pi the Roon Core? Because I'm trying to figure out the issue around setting up the core. I really hate that I have to add another piece to the rig, but Roon's value proposition ends up being worth it.
I like it when you review and show us new gadgets like this. What a cool concept! Now I have to go out and buy a Surface Dial and try to integrate it with Spotify.
Dear John. After stumbling upon your channel here on CZcams, I have since got my old CDs out, changed to amazon HD from Spotify (although they say hifi is coming soon). A new dac, dongles and new speakers + amps are all on my shopping list. For now I am listening to CDs on my blue ray dvd player. (all I could find for the time being) Thank you for turning me back into good quality sound. Listening to CDs felt like getting my hearing back. Steaming services have destroyed good sound for the majority of people.
Simply love your channel - enlightening the enthusiast with kit we would not generally hear or read about, especially in 3rd world countries. Thank you...i'm a fan
I bought the kit and set it all up today. It wasn't entirely straightforward, but I was very pleased when it all worked. I think it's great. Big thanks to the RooDial inventor and to John for telling us about it!
I have the Bartok coming in the next couple weeks. 😊. I like this volume control, though I'm always hesitant to use volume controls in pre/DAC, opting to use the volume control on my Luxman Integrated. Less in the chain. Not sure if that's the best way or not?
John is a Pi required to make the Senic work with Roon? I was able to order the Starter Kit from the US Sonos Store just now but I can’t find info on if the Senic Hub will interface with Roon alone or I still need a Pi. Thanks.
Hi John, I bought the numio starter set at the Sonos store last week. It comes with the control hub, so no PI is needed. It works perfectly with Roon and rooExtend after install a Bluetooth adapter and the the software. Thanks for the great video ...
After finally biting the bullet and porting my old Roon server to an M1 Mac Mini due to stability issues, took this on as an additional add-on project. I've never been satisfied with the +/- buttons Roon offers to control Group zones, rather than offering at least a slider, and this looked promising. Have to say, it works impeccably. Granted, the set up is definitely a bit of a project and involves sourcing the components, assembling the kit, and integrating it into the network, but looks more daunting on paper than it actually is, and truly takes less than half an hour. Very robust, and great tactile feel. Also being able to wake and sleep Roon with a single press of the dial at any time without dealing with an interface is priceless...
Hi John, could you please tell us how you use the Surface Dial to control the Bluesound Powernode, or other BlueOS devices. I would very much appreciate your insights!
Physical volume knob is great. On a smaller size, I like to set the volume with the digital crown of my Apple Watch when I play or control music from my iphone. It is sad that when we play or control from ipad that doesn’t work.
I think a key point to keep in mind is that Roon can directly control the volume of many DACs (such as the Bartok) via "Use Device Controls" settings but in setups where Roon can't directly control the DACs volume (e.g. Chord Mojo and older DACs) you need to use DSP volume control which attenuates the volume level of the digital signal sent to the DAC. While Roon does this very well (in 64 bit) this does still technically lead to a reduction in the signal quality being sent to the DAC in proportion to the amount of attenuation applied. (the lower the volume, the worse the signal quality) . As Roon say "This is a high-quality option, but should not be your first choice for hardware that provides volume control natively." dCS really do have some bottle charging extra for their "Universal IR remote control" on a £15K DAC!!
Doing the same but hooked Ares to my onkyo AVR and there is a nice extension to hook the AVR to the roon volume so it controls the hardware volume of the AVR. Now I am thinking of a infrared dial.
This guys should look at doing an IKEA version too as IKEA has the Tradfri wireless controllers such as the Tumbling Little block, the disk version( most like the dial) or the shortcut. Having said that there’s also the Flic buttons. Careful JOHN soon you’ll be talking Home Kit integration 😄
I’m sort of confused. Is this changing the digital signal of Roon, or is it actually changing the physical volume of the amplifier? Would love to see a comparison or pros/cons of changing the volume digitally vs. on the amplifier.
It changes the output of whatever is the Roon Ready device that is connected to your Roon Core. The Core sends a digital signal with no volume information I believe. What I see is the numbers change on the screen of my NDX2 streamer as its output to the amp is increased or decreased. I do not see a change in the volume of my amp. Others here may have Roon Ready amps I guess.... I don't know much about other peoples' hifi kit.
The dCS Universal Remote, which is huge and does have a cool volume knob on it, is supplied with Rossini and Vivaldi, but not with Bartok. It does work with the Bartok though and can be purchased separately as an accessory - an expensive accessory.
Best ever, Naim QB2 and Star. Had a demo of the Burmester 032 before I bought my 036 and that was very good as well. In other news, I listened to three of your top ten albums/CD's a couple of times. I won't be listening again. Daft Punk, Digitonal and Jon Hopkins are common listens for me and float my boat far more than the three I tried. Horses for courses and so on.
I really like the concept, in the same way as i like the form factor of Naim round volume dial on top of their recent Uniti’s. I would pay a premium for a universal remote with same form factor and functionality as the German device with some added Naim polish. I see the problem as not enough folks willing to drop hard coin on this type of deceive for just one application i.e. Roon Music volume. I guess voice assistants are the thing for most people.
Not a knob feel… But I got a Logitech Harmony remote and it can control both my dCS Rossini and transport and is very handy. I am considering purchasing the dCS remote that has a volume knob.
Hey, Miguel. The Logitech Harmony is just about my favourite gadget in the history of gadgets. A real shame Logitech have gotten out of the smart remote business. If it wasn't for Harmony there is no way my family would be able to work my increasingly complex AV and hifi systems which would cause a distinct lack of, erm, harmony in the household. I've had mine for years and years and it just keeps going. When it gives up the ghost I may just have to buy a, eeeuchh, soundbar and give up.
Got to admit I always use the volume controls on my amps, feeling that digital volume controls are just not as good, though I have absolutely no evidence for this. Also, getting up from the couch occasionally helps to prevent audiophile deep vein thrombosis, a hazard for old audiophile farts like me. Not to mention middle age spread.
The iPhone volume button is so imprecise and the finger slider not much better. There can be a slight lag as well creating an “uh oh” moment during a dinner party or late night apartment listening. The remote is elegant but I find myself still missing the efficiency and exacting abilities of a knob. I would place such a device within reach of the dinner table, the arm of the couch, the nightstand or where I am practicing the double bass, all places where I want to quickly control volume. I might imagine having a few in said locations.
I am buying Microsoft dial for controlling brightness in my windows PC. If two can be paired simultaneously, I will buy second to control volume in the PC. I will buy third if it can control volume of LS50 wireless 2.
I prefer the concept we get with BluOS App / devices. You can program any of your remotes you already have at home and use it to control NAD / BlueSound devices. Easy enough and no extra money needed.
I’ve done that with the CD controls on my amp remote; I can control the amp volume with that too of course, I’d still like a device like this that could offer an IR solution; I’d always want a global master volume though, and my amp doesn’t know what the internet is.
I think it’s great that you’re talking about these kinds of things, but a little more of the tech info would be useful, especially for interested parties. I know you don’t want to get super in depth, and that’s fine, but a tiny bit more info would be welcome. For example, this volume control extension will degrade the Roon signal path from bit perfect IF your Roon endpoint doesn’t support device volume control. It will instead use DSP volume, and that’s a very important consideration someone has to make if they pursue this particular route.
