My work actually tripled during the pandemic because for some reasons, some folks were still using dial up to work remotely and couldn't even work remotely using the apps we were using.

    The government should have called CERB as it should be: a loan, not a benefit. Benefit implies there is no strings attached, while a loan is something that needs to be paid back. There are some who applied for it because they were led into believing this was 'free money' when this was more along of the line of a loan. They should have called this as Canada Emergency Response Loan

      It's a loan without any interest for 3 and half years, which could be $4,500.00. That's the benefit part. The business owners knew what it was when they got it. Their bookkeepers have explained everything in detail. They have no excuse not to pay it back.

    My job went from 5 days a week to 1-2 days during the pandemic...so I thought I was eligible. I got the benefit for 3 months. Now years later I randomly get a letter saying I'm being investigated, and I have to go back to my old employer and get all my paystubs during that period, and a letter from my old manager who is long gone. What a lame hassle. What was the point of paying all those CERB taxes and submitting my T4? They should have all this info already

      @brenly7054 I treated it like my student loans. I invested it, got interest, and then paid it back in full the minute I got my letter. The interest is free money. If you're smart, you can take advantage of the fact that there's no interest on the CERB. Even if the stock market wasn't the greatest at the time, it was a great time to buy into it. When it bounced back, that made everything worth it. I actually made money on my student debt too.

      It's really not, it's an agency they did exactly what legislators told them to. That's their job. To do whatever the elected government tells them to and to warn them when it's a bad idea.

    Yup. I overpaid my taxes by over 3 grand. I can’t even contact them to get it back. All emails sent to them sent me to someone else. Since I don’t have dental coverage I need that money for major work. I’m afraid if I go to their office they will just direct me to go online to do it.

      The issue is that they didn't lose income. CERB and all the other emergency benefits had eligibility requirements that are set out in law which are not even that hard to meet. However, many Canadians applied for it knowing they didn't qualify for those minimal requirements. Now they'll be facing the consequences of their actions.

      @@cw9282 They knowingly applied for CERB because they needed it. The eligibility requirements were absurd. If you had income in 2019 over a certain amount, you were eligible. If you didn't, you weren't eligible. In other words, if you really needed CERB because you were already poor, you weren't eligible.

    Im a single mom of two kids under 10. I was on mat leave till sept 2018. My dad had a motorcycle accident in October 2018. Both his legs were severly broken. I took care of him for most of 2019. I was hospitalized with severe pneumonia January 2020 (covid). I had no choice but to collect some money or we would of been living in a tent! I will no doubt have to pay back as well! Im currently on disability for chronic pain. After having covid my body was never the same. Ive had two surgeries since then! The depression is real tuff to deal with knowing this is coming and i can barely feed my kids now.

      @@squatch545 That's really not far off. No one escapes sales tax that eats up 13% of your net that has already been taxed at least 15%. Another 13% in my case goes towards property taxes and that's because I'm lucky enough to not be paying $2000 a month for a 1 bedroom in a building where I don't have crack heads and/or drug dealers.
      How brain washed do you have to be to believe that half of your money should go toward taxes that fund cronyism?

      It's not that hard to collect the money. The assessments are already issued. Now it's in the hands of collections who need to issue only a few RTPs/garnishments to all their bank accounts and the money in those bank accounts are gone in an instant.

      CRA policy works on the premise the applicant is always in the wrong. Onus is the applicant to show error, not the CRA. It's a biased system.

    Any money, this guy had been paid under the table for years to avoid taxes and, as a result, could not show the required minimum of $5k income for the previous year. If he's able to prove it, he'll face tax fraud, but without that evidence, it's CERB fraud. You have to pick your crimes - you don’t get to commit both.

    I had a number of friends who never worked and took the Cerb and they are mad they have to pay it back....I'm grateful for the Cerb it saved me....a friend took it and hadn't worked for over a decade and is mad she owes 30 grand...I'm like girl I told you.
