Great video. One thing to note, in your comment that with Lotus cobra you can use BSZ as a backup wincon to deck your opponents so long as you get rid of Aesi, as it turns out Aesi’s draw trigger is a may, so you can just opt not to draw at that point.
Two things I love, mutating Scute Swarm and Risen Reef!
I bought this deck around Christmas because I recently became a Commander addict and have a secret weakness for blue-green.
Then I watched this... I already own roughly 80% of the replacement recommendations, and I'm certain I can get the last handful for about 5 bucks. Great video, can't wait to update this deck

I have to say, you guys knocked it out of the park with this one. This is the best upgrade list I've seen for this deck. You knew what you wanted the deck to do, and you kept your list tied to that. A lot of other upgrade lists are unfocused, clickbaity, and/or unhelpful.
Honestly those are 3 things we actively try and avoid! Our main goal really is to help people upgrade this deck on a budget and win games with it!

No regrets, I made mine sea creature tribal because if not this commander then who? I’ve got enough landfall only decks.

There are other good options when it comes to sea-monster tribal but hope it works for you!
@@DREADxMAW no question but the biggest issue with them is their very steep mana curve so a sea creature general that has ramp and card draw is a huge help. Especially because the card draw is a byproduct of the ramp. I don’t see a better option. Sure there are other options but not better IMO.
@@finks1 That's correct, there are better landfall deck, but not many sea monster deck, as someone who really love them I will keep them for my deck
Koma is also fun in this deck. It's pretty neat with ramping lands early and drawing if you can get it out and then you get a small army of monsters. While everyone is busy with that you can do more set ups like you said. Not the best given how some cards double but it's a neat distraction from the true threats happening. Works worse the more players are in the game cause they might team up against you but brilliant one on one even against often stronger or higher budget decks
I have never heard of Stone Seeder Hierophant but now I'm getting a copy for my Windgrace deck
I was gifted an Aesi deck in May and upgraded it following this video. It is now feared in my play group, if I play Aesi I am targeted because if I make it to turn 8 or 9 it's all over for them. Working on upgrading Coven Counters now... can't wait to see the results!

Great video. I’m getting my neighbors son into magic so I bought him this Precon for Christmas. Going to go ahead and throw a few of these upgrades in. I’ll probably add courser of kruphix in just because I have a few of those. Thanks for the ideas!!

Thought vessel and reliquary tower are super necessary with this commander and tatyova in play.

Totally, Reliquary Tower is one of the lands you can find with your tutors
Folio of Fancies is a decent card as well, if universal in payoff, because you can use it in some situations to finish off opponents (IE after you've milled everyone else, you can force them to draw a card).
Now I know this is a budget video but I built aesi from scratch. I focused on the obvious ramp strategy but focusing on slamming down big Eldrazi or going super wide with avenger of Zendikar and blinking it at end step with thassa.
Fathom mage is great . Shoulda kept it in , synergizes with retreat to Kazandu , and you can add a lore scale Coatl , cheap 1$ card that synergizes well with fathom mage and other pieces in the deck .
Well, thank you for the intel on such interesting infinite combo with scute swarm. I believe it could also work with Aesi on board and an Ashaya, but it wouldn't be that budget. Will consider for landfall decks nonetheless, really cool combo

If i were to buy either the Zendikar Rising precon set or the Commander Legends precon deck set, which one would you guys recommend? Most important to me is 1)fun to play when upgraded 2)deck strength when upgraded 3)fun to play out of the box 4) deck strength out of the box 5) card value.
So if you add scute swarm. There is a creature in this deck that gains life when a creature enters the battlefield Stormtide provides enough lockdown to allow scute swarm to ramp like crazy then bounce stormtide and beat someone's face in.
Hey there, I guess you both forgot to include the mysterious card called Ghost Town. Although you can only use it during other player's turn, it adds another layer of redundancy. Being a land also helps for taking any space in the deck.

Nice suggestions. I like your choices for the budget. If people have an extra $100 or $150 instead of $50 to beef it up I recommend what I did, which is basically landfall matters, massive ramp, lab maniac, peregrine drake and whale, deadeye, walking ballista, etc. etc. combo's matter deck with some cheap tutors. Basically combo to insta deck myself win or insta burn win.
Prior to this upgrade my Aesi, with like maybe $15 of upgrades and a sylvan library thrown in is frustrating to play with, take it from me. Ramp lots and reliably, draw lots and reliably but... no real win condition. I usually win because my opponents scoop due to boredom of me constantly shuffling my deck!
As for the sea monsters theme, just ditch that. Sea monsters suck, Simic has so many more effective mechanics you can leverage and lets be honest, tribal kinda sucks in commander. Thoughts?
Scute swarm indeed can get really crazy. I had 6000+ scute in 2 turns with this deck. Completely Ridiculous!

I new some cards it's fun. I kind of went crazy with some things atm probably should take out the planeswalkers and vorinclexs. But extra smash cards that's fun is black blade reforged and lieutenant baloth.
How would you like Thunderfoot Baloth in the deck? Granted, its price of 99c would push you over budget, but it would solve a lot of the problems you had with "donkeys" (aka creatures without trample)
I’m brand new to commander and wanted to try making a first deck. I was inspired by the Deep archetype from Legends of Runeterra and wanted to make a sea monster themed deck. I saw this and the Kenessos commander and think they would work pretty well together. Would this be a worthy purchase to use with that card? Sadly, I think the upgrades in the video might not be relevant if I go that route. Any recommendations on how to build the deck in that direction?
Non-budget combo can be with meloku, mystic sanctuary and any time warp spell. Infinite turns and Infinite 1/1 flying illusions. Sanctuary is dumb and i love it.
If I play crop rotation first turn, to get me a simic growth chamber, I will have to take the chamber back to my hand right?
I kept 1 or 2 of the sea monsters, just cuz they make good distractions while im getting my combos together
My big problem with Aesi is that with Tatyova, I'm already running on fumes when I get Tatyova out, lucky to have a land in hand still, so I feel like needing to get to 6 before I get to draw a card is painful beyond words, and I run 45 lands in my Tatyova deck, so I'm very likely to have a lot of lands. I run budget combo, so it's pretty much infinite combo for casual play. It feels great when you combo off, but it's super-unlikely vs a deck that can interfere in any way. Also, loving the picks.
Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar is great with Altar of Dementia as a back up wincon to deck people. I fear mill a great deal in combo decks, so I have quite a few ways to actually 'win' off of infinite mana or landfall (and or drawing my deck). Altar also works with Scute Swarm I suppose. Altar or Capsize is handy to remove your Commander if you can't draw anymore cards, and anything like Elixir of Immortality works well, giving you a few more cards to work with potentially.
In the Coralhelm/Land Dork combo, Stone-Seeder Hierophant is a nice addition, as is Lotus Cobra.
Note, Thwart is a very viable later game free counterspell for a budget, a hilariously good perk when you think about how it can protect a wincon for no mana, which can be key for this kind of deck.
Coral Atoll is a potential combo piece, especially since it taps for blue and a colorless, allowing infinite colorless pretty easily with Stone-Seeder and a Freed from the Real or Pemmin's Aura, so I don't think that should 'go', especially since if you draw it early, it does help get your commander out, since he's 6 bloody mana, and a land that effectively adds an extra land sounds really, really sweet to me.
Things that bounce lands can be nice in a deck like this, so Ghost Town can be a sneaky card with Alchemist's Refuge, allowing you to win on someone else's turn before they can start playing cards. Handy if you already had a Ghost Town kicking around, and always wanted to use it! Moonfolk can also work, especially if you have infinite mana/land drops. Trade Routes is a bit more money than most Moonfolk you'd want tbh.
I dont understand how you could take out scourge of fleets. I have won so many games waititing till my opponents are tapped out and making them return their creatures just over and over with peel from reality

I was looking to make a lands matter deck and I looked at this commander/tatyova and the new Omnath. I was leaning towards the new Omnath, but you guys make this simic deck look so much fun! I am once again torn. (Btw do you guys feel Aesi or Tatyova makes for the better commander?)
I think it is about the same honestly. I have Omnath and I love him as a commander

Plasma capture, Bounty of the luxa, id feel are potential sideboard cards for this.
OH MY GOD THAT STUPID HYDRA, I put it in my new partner deck because I just assumed it was an and ability because no way they would make a "rare" that bad, the first time I cast it and read it out loud to the table I realized my horrible mistake, even in a dedicated counters deck it seems super poop

Aesis draw ability isn't a mandatory trigger im pretty sure the text reads "you may draw a card" not "draw a card"

Prolly worth mentioning that risen reef's ability itself doesn't count as a card draw. Need Aesi out or to play something else from the deck that draws you a card in order for lab man to close out the game for you.
Kazandu mammoth is super good in any landfall focused death. More so in modern than commander tho

I admit I kept the sea creatures. Spawning Kraken, Koma, and Serpent of Yawning Depths are payoffs too.

Just a side note, if you infinite combo with Aesi, his draw trigger is a may, so you can keep going with something like lotus cobra. Tatyova, is mandatory, however, so be careful with her

Here is a question for y'all: if budget was not an issue amd you could make this deck as nasty as possible...what would you put in? Not hating on budget decks at all :)
You could add more Lab Man effects, Nexus of Fate to give yourself infinite turns when you draw your whole deck as well. Lotus Cobra is insane in this deck, and you get Azusa, Exploration, and Life from the Loam. If you wanted to stick with the Scute combo, Concordant Crossroads is one of the best haste enablers

If you're looking for a cheap form of trample, Aggressive Mammoth would be a good fit. It is only $.42 on TCG Player.
While I like the flavor of mammoths giving mammoths trample, I think the enabler should be a little cheaper to cast, in a very combo-heavy deck where you wanted to focus more on the infinite mammoth, I’d just go for something like Rancor

The deck list is missing 3 cards what the hell do i put in 3 lands or 3 spells?! ARG I hate figuring out stuff so tiny that could potentially make or break the deck id rather just build my own at this point instead of following this video. Don't post a public deck list that's incomplete dang it.

ah yes, take all the sea monsters out of a sea monster deck. disappointing
To be fair, they explained there goal is to make the deck as good as it can get, while still sticking to the precons roots, and a $50 budget. Even though it cut most of the sea monsters the deck is infinitely better and still plays exactly like it did before the upgrade.
