It's people, their cultures, dress, language, food, music, architecture, rich history & so much more, varies greatly across this incredible continent. The dark continent, with it's inhabitants, who's physical characteristics/traits, vary greatly, bec of the science of Africa's climatic conditions & it's ancient history, as the cradle of human civilization, is such an incredible historical reality. Good question. Yes and no... it’s complicated... as a native, particularly of Zimbabwe and south Afrika the latter my birth country and where I now live - I think there is a weird combination of weird economics and “western folk imagine how African music would sound like”. May i suggest watching
1. African UniquesTraditional Dance & Music Group-Djembe Rhythms
2. Chiwoniso Marire) and an interesting group
3. Mbira Dzenharira
The last two being from Zimbabwe with many similarities, yet also with interesting differences, not celebrated enough to take it to some sweeter levels. May I ask to where you are Native?

Meggi that's such a great question, to me this kind of music would be played at gatherings or in the streets, there would be a lot more random vocals and breaks. This one sounds like it was recorded in a studio and the play style is very deliberate as opposed to the former which is about the energy. Less organic but definitely African. Actually I think I've heard some modern lounge artists capture the organic sound better but i couldnt tell you where
