This is absolutely the best modern Tour de France. Its the 100 year anniversary. Thankfully I have it on 5 DVDs. I've watched it over and over. Thanks.

Surely one of the best Tours ever. As a German my focus was always on Ullrich, but the main contender 2003 was Beloki. I remember feeling the pain of his crash and hearing him cry on the tarmac still gives me shivers. Obviously the drama is what makes the 2003 Tour, but imagine what a race it would have been without that crash. Vinokourov also stepped up that year. Fans were really treated in 2003.
@@spybaz I read it as well. I liked Hamilton as a racer as well, he was unlucky with his crashes. The doping has never changed. The spectacle though, it has never been as good as 2003. This year was quite a good one as well though.

No one compares to him, he was unique with his powerhouse and huge stamina. So sad, that these times are gone forever.....
Unfortunately, he did something very stupid. He waiting on the climb of Luz Ardiden while all the former champions said that he should have pushed for the stage win and TdF win. And they were right. Especially since Ullrich himself had been victim of competitors exploiting his technical problems all the time. All this talk about "you should wait for the yellow jersey" is complete nonsense, Armstrong was full of shit mumbling similar nonsense. And we all know Armstrong would not have waiting had the roles been the other way around. The only time when he "waited for Jan" was 2001 ...with 6 minutes advantage ...with a pretty much decided Tour at that point ...and with many miles ahead of him getting to the finish line of that stage. So of course he waited because he needed Jan as an additional body. The alternative would have been exhausting himself solo, and he was clearly not in the mood for that since it could backfire. 2003 was bad. Jan was clearly the strongest (just like 1998) but he missed the win. It was his to lose and he lost it.

It's hard to believe that a cycling journalist of Phil's experience had no suspicions of Armstrong for so long, but they have to be careful what they say in case they get sued. Armstrong did a lot of that as well !
I still find it curious, after all these years, that the closest Jan Ullrich got to beating Armstrong was when he wasn't riding for Telekom/T-Mobile. Some of their team selections (such as dropping Cadel Evans for Rolf Aldag) and their tactics just didn't make sense !

Adrenaline? Nope. Ulrich tried to attack Armstrong earlier on the stage but it didn't come to anything. Ulrich's best chance was on stage 13 when he dumped Armstrong in the final 1k...but Armstrong recovered to only lose 7 seconds. Ulrich really lost the tour early that year at L' Alpe D'Huez (stage 8).
It's not crazy, it's what Jan said himself. He decided to wait. He was stronger, his legs were perfect that day as he admitted to one of his fanclubs once during a live meet. He said he knew exactly how this stage would play out, he knew when Armstrong would try it and that he would attempt using one of the "annoying" Spaniards to initiate stuff during the last climb. Jan said also, that he felt weird the longer the wait took. And when Armstrong tried it again, his legs felt like "jelly". Later they discussed this with the doctors and came to the conclusion that his pulse went too low and that the aerob/anaerob state in his legs was not favorable anymore. This is supported by the facts that he did not crack badly but needed a few kilometers to regain his superior pace and superior rhythm. It was simply a mistake to wait. Hinault, Indurain, all of them said it. It was honorable, but it was stupid. He lost the tour on that mountain. Imagine the final time trial with Ullrich being 30-40 seconds ahead. Armstrong would have been fucked. Those rainy conditions did not allow for any big gains.

Not everyone who doped won but to catch up to LA I think the other guys decide to even their odds by dabbling.... No its not. This is such a major misconception. Ullrich was always so much less doped than lance. He clocked in at his natural 43 hematocrit in a lot of these races, while Lance was always doped to the max at 49.9. It was massively unfair.

Nope. Armstrong was better at Luz Ardiden and had finally gotten over his dehydration at Cap Decouverte. Now he might have indeed beaten Armstrong but not by over a minute. His crash proved that he was indeed pushing it and taking risks. He was just six seconds better than Armstrong at that point. The Walser bike was a real advantage for Ulrich and one that caused Armstrong sleepless nights that year.

People always focus on his few bad days during the Tour and try to generalize. The problem with the conditions was that Jan was not able to push and his fall clearly illustrated this issue. Jan was the strongest rider that year, and it was his to lose, not Armstrong's. Unfortunately, he lost it by not joining Sastre, and by waiting for Armstrong instead of pushing ...just like all the other champions said. Imagine Indurain being on that mountain that day. Do you really think Indurain, Hinault, Merckx etc. would have waited? LOL They even said they would not have. Falls are part of the sport and your own fault as a rider. They are no concern of the riders who did not fall. And we all know Armstrong would not have waited.
I really hope someone reads this and can answer, do they still make these? Like, summarized editions of the tour, maybe giro and other races too, but for modern times? These seem official and id love to watch modern iterations of grand tours in this format.
