      Floyd Sr was actually amazing. He was a freak, but he got caught with the wrong crowd, drugs, etc. If he has the training, discipline, diet and conditioning of an elite athlete, took it seriously, he probably would have steam rolled Leonard. One of many "what ifs", but thru witnessing his father's failures, Floyd Jr became the GOAT and super disciplined.

      I appreciate your sentiment, but I must beg to differ. Pure boxing purists, and everyone else knew and appreciated Sugar Ray Leonard. The video, itself, featured here, attests to that very fact. After winning Gold in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Leonard soon turned pro. He was known more popularly as a fighter for the 80s. He was acknowledged as one of the "Four Kings" of boxing, in the company of fellow champions, Roberto Duran, Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, and "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler. They created the greatest era of boxing, south of the heavyweight division, for the welter through middleweight divisions. The iconic "War" between Hagler-Hearns is still talked about, more than 40 years later. To this very day, "Hagler-Heatns" has become the standard term for a much anticipated showdown between two explosive fighters meeting in their prime. Leonard Hearne was also an epic showdown. These fighters all faced one another, and dodged no one. So, no, none of them are forgotten for their dynamic contributions to the sport of boxing. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

      I'd have to disagree. To this day more people know who SRL is compared to many guys who have belts today. You can still see him on TV making commercials, because his name is a brand that sells.

      @eac1235 Před 28 dny +4

      The best??? Uh no...Duran far outshines Leonard. Remember he was a champion for 3 years by the time Leonard won the 76 Olympics. Larry Holmes was better, and a guy by the name of Muhammad Ali was better as well. A slew of Mexican and Puerto Rican fighters from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Marvin Hagler was better ,regardless of half blind judges. Had they fought in 82 ,Ray would have left on a stretcher. Now with all that he is definitely a top 10 Welterweight. As far as middleweight barely top 20. Beating a faded Hagler doesn't make him all time great and then fighting for a made up super middleweight title and light heavyweight title ,while a little impressive doesn't make him all time great. I still would say that he's a top 100 all time fighter. Mostly because he fought greats who had already peaked such as Hagler and Duran. Benitez hardly trained. Hearns was a great victory but fight 2 ,Tommy got hosed ,he clearly won and even Ray admitted he lost as well. Ray was a media darling meant to take Ali's place. That and the fact that Angelo Dundee was his trainer. Any fight that Dundee was part of that was controversial his guy always won. Maybe because his brother Chris Dundee had very strong mafia ties but that's another story. Best you ever saw ???? Only if you had tunnel vision.

  • @CYMotorsport
    @CYMotorsport Před měsícem +24

    Fantastic fight. Dundee had his overcompensating for the fact that Floyd was legitimately giving SRL a MUCH better scrap than they seemed to except. There’s also an incredibly strange moment in this fight that I actually think think is one of the most rare I’ve ever seen in couple dozen years watching boxing.
    At 8:02 both throw a right hand that would have dramatically changed the fight - imo Ray would have sparked Floyd out cold in the dirt and while we now know Ray’s chin is iron, at this point if this landed I think Ray was in trouble. Floyd seemed to have seen Ray throw it last second fully loaded up and rushed his shot only to divert late and attempt to deflect with his glove. and Ray 100% calculated Floyd was landing first hence why he slightly pulled it and braced try to slide out just a bit to let it glance . But then their punches actually punch eacother mid air with what I still think is their wrists colliding. You can tell it hurt Floyd BAD watch his right arm go limp for a second and steps back stunned. I’ve scaled the image up cleaning the edges it doesn’t land on Floyd. It just confused the hell out of him and you could tell he was in pain. Shocked he didn’t shatter his wrist. He really did rise to the level of his competitor in this night you gotta give him that .

      And Pac did absolutely NOTHING in that fight. The better fighter, who was never knocked out or tkoed won, simple as that.

    I remember watcthing this fight, I pulled for Leonard because he was so closely tied to Ali - the Fighting styles so closely resembled Ali. Ali had not yet retired and Angelo Dundee displayed his Condidence on Sugar Ray Leanard. He fought so much like a Ali at a lower weight Limit. His connections to Ali were obvious at that time.

    Two great warriors early in the business. SRL had the mass appeal and the cute cuddly thing going on but he was dangerous when his opponent was in trouble. FM was no slouch but no one was safe with a young, hungry, quick handed showman like SRL. I remember watching him against the equally dangerous Wilfredo Benitez and it was touch and go up until the point SRL had him in trouble and SRL put that head to bed. His hand speed, defense, ring savvy for a young boxer along with an underrated boxing IQ was very lethal for opponents. Plus he had the bonus in the legendary Angelo Dundee. He understood who the boxers were and allowed them to be themselves which harnessed their best stuff and reined them in when necessary. He, Cus, Eddie Futch and Emmanuel Steward were my favorites and Roger Mayweather was underrated and mean in the corner.
