Man, Bravely Second is my favorite of the three games, and I like a fair amount of the soundtrack even though REVO isn't onboard. But someone *really* should've told the composer that there were more instruments than electric guitar.
I was so annoyed when Anne's battle theme primarily focused on acoustic guitar and violin and I was just like "Oh so you CAN use other instruments and you've chosen not to??"

I really like how the themes in Bravely Default 1 & 2 feel like character themes, complete with unique instrumentation. While the Bravely Second themes are nice, having them all just use electric guitar the whole time makes the themes feel less unique and more like additional generic battle themes.
Revo is amazing!!
While I agree that Second using the same instrumentation for all special themes is disappointing, and makes them lose identity, it does give a slight trade off of higher unity between them. Also, despite how it sounds at first, they do have distinctly different melodies. As annoying as it is to see You Are My Hope, and Baby Bird being exchanged for generic themes, not counting BB's use in chapter 1, I do appreciate Yew and Magnolia's special themes still being their character themes, they just happen to be instrumented into rock. The cutscene versions of those two themes sound more distinct as well.
It’s because REVO didn’t do the soundtrack for Bravely Second, but they did end up reusing some of the tracks from Flying Fairy
It's sad because BS's character themes could really shine if the composer used different instruments and soundscapes for each theme to give them a distinct character. The composition itself is amazing, but using the same guitar for all of the melodies just makes them feel samey
I agree completely. Listening to Bravely second made me remember why i loved 1’s so much. Listening to these as a nostalgia ride, i could tell who’s songs were who for the 1st without looking, but struggled with second.
Still, loved them and I wish there would be more.

I recently noticed something about the names of the themes of Bravely Default II : in addition of talling something about the characters they also tie in the element of the Crystal that chosen the Character. It's the kind of details I absolutely adore.
Elvis is down to earth, Gloria goes with the flow, Adelle having a flame inside of her, etc
The dip in quality of music between Default and Second is staggering. I've replayed Bravely Second a half a dozen times and I still could not tell you the difference between any of those character themes.
Hard to beat BD 1’s themes, but Adelle’s was so emotional from a story perspective. Probably the only time a Special theme made me choke up. Trumpet on Adelle, trumpet on. 🎺 🎺 🎺

Yea I think it's pretty much a slam dunk with BD 1. BD 2 is also up there but bravely second isn't quite there I can't remember any of them.

I love all 3 games and all 3 OSTs but I have to say, Second’s is easily the weakest OST, Ryo isn’t a bad composer at all but there is such thing as too much electric guitar, it makes the entire game feel different compared to the other two, especially coming out of 3DS speakers, it’s a different quality, a different tone
Edit Note: it’s especially glaring when you stop to notice the electric guitar plays like, 99% of the OST’s melodies, and some other instrument or choir is always maintaining the same note, same melody, underneath. It makes the whole OST feel a little “samey.” It lacks Revo’s uniqueness

It’s unfortunate too because the electric guitar fit SO well for the Diamanté battle, like it was *chef kiss* PERFECT, but when the exact same distorted guitar plays for all 4 character themes, especially off the heels of Revo who specifically used certain instruments for their symbolism as it relates to each character….it’s a bit of a mess.

The only thing I miss in Bravely Second and Default 2 is vocal versions of those themes. They're way too good.
In bravely default 2 I miss not being able to name your special attacks. I popped off naming those. Just imagine dying to an attack named "Escargo to hell."

Tiz & Ringabel (I've never been able to choose between these two) > Seth (that acoustic guitar is fire) > Adelle (feels kinda Touhou and I love it!) > Elvis (that jazz is so good!) > Gloria > Agnes > Edea > Tiz (BS) > Edea (BS) > Magnolia > Yew
I'm in general a lot less fond of second's ost so it's not a surprise (it has good songs, but I often feel like most of it blurrs together and there's a lack of a good bass line for most of the tracks), but I think when it comes to these four it's not that they're bad per say. It's that the first time I listened to all of them while doing something else I had a hard time realizing when one ended and the next one started. It's the exact same sound... It tragically lacks personality, I don't 'hear the characters' in it :/ But I feel like Tiz's has a more intense feel than the others, which is why it's my favourite of the four!
the difference between everyone else's themes and Tiz's ones in second is that Tiz has an aditional instrument: those weird metalic percusions (not sure if they're actual cymbals or something else).
Everyone else is the same exact guitar, drums, chorus and violin. Only Tiz has those added, and IT SHOWS how special the theme feels because of it. It kills me how they didn't decide to do something similar with all 4 characters, keeping the base instruments but put an aditional one that's different between them to give it more personality. Could've knocked it out of the park.

i don't like the shift they made in main themes from bd 1 to bs, in the first one there were distinct melodies with a signature instrument while in the second one they are too similar to each other. Glad they changed this back in bd 2. The 4th wall breaks in bravely second were on another level though and even in the first one were not joking, like when the camera records you during the final bossfight
My main issue with Bravely Second themes is that they didn't reference the original themes for Tiz and Edea. Yew and Magnolia ones are incredible, but they should've used different instruments.

I know the BS themes are very divisive in the community but Magnolia’s theme is incredible, easily my favourite!
I like the cutscene version of it more than the Limit Break version. Same with Yew's music. They feel a bit more distinct there.

You know, I would agree with the majority that Bravely Second has the weakest Special moves by a long margin. But, listening to them now - it's not that they're *bad*, not even close. They're pretty damn fun & catchy in their own right.
They just don't compare well to Revo's masterpieces ^^;
Yeah they're definitely not bad songs! They're just strikingly different in the face of uniqueness Revos personalizes onto the characters.
I've always been partial to the Bravely Second themes, though that might be bias because it was my first game and I just like electric guitars. So, personal ranking is: Magnolia - Yew - Tiz (BS) - Edea (BS) - Edea (BD) - Elvis - Seth - Gloria - Ringabel - Tiz (BD) - Adelle - Agnes.
I like them all, of course, but only the top six are the ones I actively listen to, and I've always been of the opinion that while Agnes' theme is a fitting song for her in some capacity, it doesn't sound like a special move theme. Maybe it's the way it drops off so quickly into something quiet that sounds more like background or cutscene music.

I really don't like the BS ones very much because while I love ACE it 's just not the style I associate with BD series. Adelle's is low because it's a low energy theme for a high energy character that I feel is out of character. Edea's is by far the best and I love the live concert version with lyrics even more.

@@XxrayXtheMaster it was really tough deciding between Seth and Ringabel. I just have more nostalgia towards BD2. While not being the first I picked up (that would be BD1), it was the first one I've beaten, and 2's music gets me so nostalgic and emotional, and it hasn't even been a year since the game came out. It's the same reason why I like Battle With Those We Must Face over That Person's Name Is. Nostalgia goggles.

One strong opera woman singer. I think I'm biased. (Also god shattering star from fe3h and that's also opera)

I'm a ringabel man myself, the sounds of accordion to me just sounds exactly like Ringabels personality. I think his theme fits him the most of of the character themes

A lot of the official artwork for BDII includes the Octopath characters in it, especially in the official artbook there's tons of Octopath characters meeting with Seth, Tiz, and Yew.
I find myself wondering if Seth is actually originally from the Octopath Traveler world. It would explain why he doesn't recognize the continent despite being a sailor but doesn't seem fazed by the asterisks... existing.

Thanks for preparing and uploading. As someone who played all three, bravely second's OSTs are somehow disappointing, they missed the uniqueness and the spirit of the characters.
I agree completely. REVO's strength as a composer (for videogames at least) is his uniqueness and it helps to really fit the characters and match with their personalities.
@@XxrayXtheMaster Revo's original music has made him perfectly primed to write music for video games - especially haracter themes. His original band sound horizon is where he creates entire stories and worlds with amazing characters all through music.
In essence he has trained himself to write emotional empathetic music ( for characters) and atmospheric scenic pieces (for the scenes the stories are set in)
Ryo just doesn't have that experience - so it's only natural some of his tracks miss the mark. (However, diamante, kaiser, providence and the Japanese theme are perfect)

PLEASE PLEASE CHECK OUT SOUND HORIZON - ITS LITTERALLY AMAZING THEY'RE LATEST RELEASE IS A BLUERAY ALBUM THAT LETS YOU CHOOSE WHICH THE DIRECTION THE STORY TAKES AND WHAT KINDA BAND DOES THAT!?!?!?!? Tell me!? And almost all of it is on par with or even above the bravely default 1 and 2 osts!

To me the song sounds hopeful, sounds strong. To me it's the music of Tiz despite having already lost everything, giving everything, giving Agnés, his all, his hope and trust
None of the other themes have giving me the same feeling of hope, made me feel as strong as Tiz's
Ringabel sounds a lot like BD2 Boss Battle 1
The Bravely Second Soundtrack really did devolve into just Electric Guitar Riffs as it got going. There's good stuff in there, but the other 2 games had better soundtracks for their restraint and variety, if nothing else. You can't get the absurd left-turn tone swerve of Elvis's theme in Bravely Second, or the delightful characterization the first time you hear Ringabell's theme and go "Oh, that's what this idiot is about", just saying.

Yes!!! Bravely second was definitely the best one in my opinion. I loved how funny and entertaining it was. It knew when to take itself seriously. Bravely default 2 felt too pretentious and the characters were boring
Funny thing is even though I feel like Second kinda fell short a tad with the annoying humor the game was not a downgrade from the original the story was still great and the gameplay was the same level. It was actually overall better than BD 2's story even though I think 2 was a slightly better game with a better ost.

BS had some killer tracks - I would argue Battle of Oblivion to be the best track of all 3 games. So I'm left to wonder why the same quality hasn't been kept for the whole OST.
Kaisers theme does go really hard. Shadows cast by the mighty might have to be my favorite of the series though. (Excluding final boss themes because they're on another level).

I’ll never get the hate for Seconds music it honestly keeps the epic factor the entire time it’s probably why second is my favorite of the 3.
They are good, but Revo’s never share a lead instrument. It makes the BD1+2 themes stand out as character themes.
This is relevant for the Special themes, but just for comparison: pay atention to Tiz's vs everyone elses in Second. It might not be the best, but it is the most easily recognizable because of it's aditional instruments, and it FEELS leagues different by virtue of that too. Everyone elses kinda blend together, even if they do sound incredibly cool. And that's the crux of the issue. Even if on Bravely Default some might appear similar, the instrumentation helps differentiate them from one another.
Tiz's flute, Agnes violin, Edea's trumpet and Ringabel's castanets are immediately recognizable the moment the theme starts: try pulling the same thing without needing to wait for a few dozen seconds into anyone that isn't Tiz on Second.
I haven't played Second to comment on the music overall, but there's a chance the repeated use of instruments and similarity between compositions extends to more than just the themes. And that, when compared to either of the other two, people can't help but feel let down because of it.

Bravely 2nd are just noisy and annoying, they don't even tell story and just randomly given. 1 and 2 got more impact as they literally characters personality and story.
