  • Woodturning - In this video, I combine sumac with glow in the dark pigments and emerald green tinted resin to make this very unique looking bowl set. I also test out the new Korpro cutter from Hunter Tool System and it worked flawlessly! Have a great weekend and please like and share my videos, thanks!

I'm not a turner nor do I work with resin - I just really enjoy watching that kind of craft on youtube.
From a strictly viewer point of view, in regard to your river table video not being popular, as opposed to last week's project, I'd say it's because other resin channels do river tables too. I've seen that made by a lot of resin artists I follow, and I will admit I too took longer to get to your river table simply because it wasn't a novelty.
The charcoal table was something unique - it was the first time I saw someone work with a charcoal piece in resin, and even the look on the thumbnail was unique and so intriguing.
So my guess it's that it's not only the fact some people watch you specifically for the turnings, but also the "novelty" aspect of the projects. The river table looked a lot more like things you can see on other channels, basically.
Anyway, I love this week's project too!
The sumac really is a gorgeous wood. At first, I was a bit worried the resin would be too green because of the emerald green pigment, but since you didn't put too much of it (well, for my tastes, obviously), it looks perfect!
I think I like the big core more than the outside big bowl this time. The patterns of the timber pieces in it are really pretty.

Isn't sumac toxic? Pretty sure the sap when burnt releases chemicals wich aren't healthy to inhale. But I'm probably remembering something wrong lol but still be safe

    • @PattersonPatch
      @PattersonPatch Před rokem

@@davidmedlin8562 staghorn sumac is a non-poisonous plant. Identify these plants by their drupes-staghorn sumac produces red fruit clusters while poison sumac forms white fruit clusters. Although the berries of staghorn sumac plants are non-poisonous, the milky sap on the branches can cause skin irritation and, in some cases, allergic reactions.
That being said the torching I do is out in the driveway not in my shop so at least I am also out in the open. But I guess I should maybe wear my good respirator when torching sumac in the future.

    1) 3 nested bowls (feel free to use 4 total and sell the outer large bowl separately)
    2) bowl turned entirely out of resin, no wood :O - UV glow would be fascinating for this.

I LOVE African Sumac. It is my favorite wood. It turns well and the grain is fantastic, The tree always has tiny branches that grow all over the trunk it that a person has to constantly be removing while it is growing and that makes for a lot of tiny little burl patches. the Sumac that I used was much more red in color and as it sat in the sunlight would get redder. I used to live in Phoenix and African Sumac is very common there. I brought a pickup truck full of it with me when I moved back to Texas a few years ago and I have now run out of it. There is a lot of mesquite and pecan here near the gulf Coast but I don't care much for those woods.

Sorry about your favorite mug, Loved the sumac bowls--the colors of the resin echoed the colors in that gorgeous wood. Hi Jim, I like the colours of the wood and shapes. The colour of resin goes well with the wood. They are beautiful set of bowls. Brilliant job 👏. Yes autumn 🍂 is beautiful time of year with all the colours of the trees. Have a good day.

Nice bowls. I think they came out just fine. The straight lines give them character. Well, done.

  • @mookinbabysealfurmittens

That is some amazing shine in the wood, and what bold grain! I grew up in a house full of oak furniture cos it was my ma's favourite (and melamine-coated pressboard cos it was cheap, lol) and it took a long time for me to take any interest in wood types, used to that clunky, kinda bland oak. It has its place, but wow, there are some beautiful creations from Nature out there - and some get to become beautiful creations from artisans like you. Really turned out stellar!

Grain looks great.. I do like the geometric shapes that are more evident on the smaller ones. Largest bowl is pretty neat👍.

    Good evening, Jim.
Very impressive project. The Sumac wood is incredibly eye catching. The newly designed coring cutter works really well. The epoxy is amazing, 6" thick and no cracks. Great video, Jim. Designer Epoxy

Favorite Cup R.I.P. There is a differences between a craftsman and a artist. And you sir are most definitely an artist. Makes me think of the "Happy Little Tree" guy on PBS. Can't remember his name. Your talk over are soothing to me. Love the glow in the dark resin, it cool. An outstanding bowl set. A stunning work of art sir.🌿 👍👍👍👍👍
