Woodturning - I've been turning since 1999 and became a full time turner in 2012 after serving 24 years in the Canadian Armed Forces. I'm known for my inlay/resin production work which makes me unique in the woodturning community.
My main source of wood comes from reclaimed logs and burls.
Some of the items I will cover on my channel include one of a kind inlayed bowls, epoxy and wood bowls, pepper and salt mills, cutting/serving boards including epoxy and other related wood turned items.

Woodturning - From Scrap Wood to Black Magic!
Woodturning - In this video I combine a few different types of burl including some mystery burl along with some cholla cactus skeletons to make this beautiful unique vase. This vase put up a fight, but in the end I was able to get it done and I love it and I hope you do as well. Please like and share with your friends, thanks!

“Designer Epoxy” is an excellent choice for use with these projects. I love how this vase turned out. Totally awesome.👏🏻
O. M. G. 😍😍😍 You know my favourite colour is blue, and that mix of Sapphire Blue and Crystal Ice White pigments from Designer Epoxy is, without a doubt, my favourite combination so far! She's absolutely stunning! From the colour, to the shape, to the burl, to that branch that gives it an extra wow factor ... she's perfect, Jim! Abso-freaking-lutely perfect!
Huge fan of this piece, Jim!!! I love the details and the pattern! It definitely looks random! Very abstract and moody, which I'm always drawn to! Designer Epoxy always has such beautiful and saturated pigments, I'm always so impressed with the depth, dimension, and intensity! I hope you feel better so we can hear about your house stuff and see another piece, but i feel like we all are actually attached to you as a person at this point! So please take care of yourself! See you in the next video!
Jim did our first pinecone resin pour with Designer Epoxy and 3 days out of pressure pot and its solid... need to buy the Hercules #3 tomorrow... Fans (or apprentices) from Indiana...
The OneWay Coring system link doesn't work. Just want to confim - need to buy the Hunter Tool Hercules 3, what Hunter tool part am I buying for the OneWay 13-1/2 Easy Core Knife Set? I just don't want to buy the wrong thing.
Perhaps it is the retrofit tool? #1, #1 square or #2????
DESIGNER EPOXY
So cool to find your very first resin bowl! You have come a long way. This bowl is beautiful! 11/20-6/23
You were a natural Burl/Epoxy turner from the beginning.
Again AWESOME work you're the man
I’m going to start working with epoxy and going to use DESIGNER EPOXY cause I like the way it turned out out for you Jim❤❤❤❤
Absolutely gorgeous 😮🤩😘👌. Your fellow Canadian 🇨🇦 is jealous 😪. I want one
Just gorgeous 😍
Nice work Designer epoxy
Jim- That piece is SPECTACULAR! The wood is beautiful. One side looks like Eastern Massachusetts with Cape Cod, and the other reminds me of Australia! I'm sure glad you left the branch on it! Very cool with the different colors. The (Designer Epoxy) resin color is beautiful! It looks like you put hypershift in it- must be the Crystal Ice White. On camera it doesn't "sparkle" as much as look pearly like the hypershift. Phenomenal masterpiece! Love it!😊
That turned out so simple yet elegant--the black contrasting with the lighter wood, plus the amazing web-detail of the catalpa burl. And as usual, the beautiful Designer Epoxy pigments add a galaxy-effect. I hate that your knees are bothering, one knee-suffer to another--praying that the pain goes away and that your knee heals! Thank you, Jim! P.S., I have a catalpa tree in my yard that I hate, LOL, wish there was some way to send it to you! I'll check it over for burls, at any rate!😁
Hi Jim the Catalpa burl is lovely and the blue resin is really lovely I really like it. The Hollowform vase is wonderful. Thank you for a great video. Amanda x
Great use of "scraps". Another outstanding project. Get some rest and take care of yourself... Your health is everything ! Designer epoxy
A lovely piece. (Thank you for "de-spitooning" it. I was getting the same vibe.) The different kinds of wood makes it very interesting. Designer Epoxy. Please take care of yourself! If that means taking time off to recharge, by all means, do it! You'll have to do that when recovering and rehabbing from your knee replacements. I don't know how much pain you are in, but I have had them both done, and it was the best thing I have ever done for myself. Do NOT do them both at the same time, though. My doc is the head of Ortho Surg at my hospital, and he did a study and found there are twice as many complications if they are done at the same time. I would have been one of those, as he found a torn tendon when he did the second one. Anyway, you need to take whatever time you need to take care of YOU! 🙏😊
Another beautiful piece, Jim! The wood is gorgeous- beautiful grain and chatoyance. I really like how you configure the pieces of wood. The color is very interesting; it shows reddish (at least on camera) on the outside, but gold when you shine the light through it- very nice. Of course, I love the hypershift! Designer Epoxy. 😊
Hi Jim! I absolutely love this vase! I would love to know how much it is, if it's still available. Also, is it considered "food safe"? Thanks in advance!
Although I watched it before, I'm just catching up on my comments. I love how the bowl turned out (pun intended). The wood is just beautiful! I am not enamored of the (Designer Epoxy) color, however. (I love hypershift, but not the color combo.) 😊
Some of these turnings are mesmerizing to watch in their transformation!
designer epoxy
Jim,did you think about using a coating of clear resin as a top coat? The bowl set is very vibrant and colorful!! ❤❤❤❤❤ And it DOES look like the hard candy my Mom would buy at Christmas!!🌲🎅🍬
Could the problem with the glue blocks stem from that its a soft wood? Have you used hardwood and had the same problem? Take care of yourself and keep using that designer epoxy.
Hi Jim, another incredible looking piece, for someone who is “new to this hollow form thing” you sure do knock it out of the park! I’m a complete outsider with epoxy, but you mentioned trouble with thermal cracking, even after putting the piece in the fridge, is it possible to cool the epoxy before mixing to try to slow the curing rate? Hope you’ve got your feet up mate, take care of yourself first, I’m sure everyone here will still be here if you have to take some time to get right. Thanks for doing what you do.
Beautiful!
Breathtaking royal beautiful art ❤❤❤❤I loved
Love your channel! You are so talented!
Gorgeous as always!
I’d like a vase that has a corkscrew spiral design. With trenches wrapping around the column of the vase. Those cactus pieces looked like flowers or fireworks when they’re laid down across the bucket not vertically. I think you could do something else fun with them. 34:26 when he showed us the inside of the piece & then the camera seemed to turn. In my head I was trying to picture how jim had managed the athletic feat of filming upside down… I then realised that it was just the lathe 😳 I’ve taken some medication idk if it’s that or just that I’m really stupid 😂 1:02:44 get well soon Jim 🤗
Man! This is a beautiful piece. maybe your best?
Would a small chest freezer be too cold for something like this? I have an old one that still works but accidently got unplugged and once the smell gets in them you can never get it out, but it would be perfect for something like this
Iron wood (not to be confused with the Asian wood) is also known as American hornbeam. It is one of the hardest woods in North America
I’m new to your channel and absolutely love it, even though, I am not a. lathe turner, I look forward to seeing what you use next, your creations are always amazing, even got my daughter to check you out and she was very impressed, I look forward to your next creation, I especially like the way you present your creation with the slow spin and light, and music, I think it adds class to to your work.. I also enjoy you talking about a project or what you are currently doing and letting those of us who do not know anything about turning, you help us to understand which makes watching even better. Keep the videos coming!
You did it again with a beautiful shape - not to discount the stunning resin and interesting wood patterns. Take care of yourself and try to get some rest.
Oh, thank goodness! I thought that foot was too large, too!!! And, yes, that cove made a huge improvement! ( I, personally, would have preferred a smaller, lighter top end, too, to make it less top-heavy. But this is gorgeous!!!)
Wow. Congratulations on your 24 year military service!
I totally agree about the voice over. And the hypershift with that lighter blue is alive!!!!!! Gorgeous, even from the start.
Beautiful as usual!! I have been experimenting with using waste blocks. I have had one come off. I use a Hurricane chuck with dovetail jaws. I cut the tenon and the shoulder in the block after it’s glued in place. I’m having an issue with Designer Epoxy Art Cast as a sealer coat. I am doing a flat piece and after it sits, I get dry spots. It’s happened on bowls too. I wipe everything with denatured alcohol before coating. Ideas? Thanks for the video! Good luck on the house sale!
It’s almost expected to get dry spots on the wood after one coat, it should get less with a second coat and should be all sealed up on the third if that’s what you’re using as a finish. I prefer The Pro Series for this method, Artcast will work too, but I like that the Pro Series flows better because it’s a tow to one resin. Thank you very much!
I know you don't like resin over the wood, but the effect with the translucent resin is stunning. LOVE it!
Thank you so much!
Spectacular!
Thanks!
Good perseverance Jim. Glad you got rid of the spitoon look.....I was seeing that just before you mentioned it. The final form looks somewhat like a Native American pot to me.....a look that I like and often try to replicate. Designer Epoxy.
Thanks 👍
Again: the correct narrative for informational purposes of the essential (remnants of a military life perhaps). Love the videos, and yes you made the right decisions. Encore bravo, brother. By the way, where do you get your Waterlox? Levis
Thanks so much! I order it right from Waterlox.com
I love it 🥰
Thanks so much!
Jim, This one is just ok for me. Wouldn't stabilizing with Cactus Juice help with the punky wood as well, rather than just using Deep Cast in the vacuum chamber? It would help me understand your reasoning? It was disappointing the wood in the neck was still soft and difficult to cut. Oneway does sell smooth dove tail jaws. Have you considered Vicmarc chucks they use smooth dove tail jaws. I love mine. I'm sure taking care of your health should be top priority. Please take care.
Yes, stabilizing first would of been preferred. Unfortunately time didn’t permit it. Oneway makes dovetail jaws but they call it something else. I ordered two different sizes for my stronghold chuck. Thank you very much!
That’s such pretty wood! Your skills are amazing!
Thank you very much!
Jim well that turned out so fantastic mate, these colours you are using are just amazing that piece is brilliant
Many thanks!
I love the vase! The cove details have been a great addition to your work. Designer Epoxy
Thank you very much!
Nice work Designer epoxy
Thank you! Cheers!
