This video saved my ass. Literally no other video on youtube or even the instructions that came with the shortened linkage made a mention or a peep about the linkage lock out so I ripped my engine bay apart 8 times trying to figure it the hell out. You're a god send brother.

    To confirm order of operations:
    Car in neutral
    Pull back spring 1
    Pull back spring 2
Push down and lock into place with pin.
Use 5mm tool to align shifter and leave it in
    Release spring 1
    Release spring 2
    Remove 5mm tool
    Release locking pin
    Did I miss anything?
    Thank you

I have never commented on any youtube video before, but Man you saved my day. I installed the Euro short shifter on my MK7 and 1st gear was very hard to engage. Just followed this and now shift like butter. Thanks a lot!

Seriously. Best comment as I just did the same thing and having the same issue. I took it to the dealer and paid 163 for it to be slightly better. Seriously freaking out as they say my transmission sounds shot now. I have a new ecs clutch stage 2 less than 6 months and they said it sounds like I have dog cut gears because of the misalignment meaning I shot my trans trying to do this cheap little shift modification

Good video man, but extra tip for anybody doing this, pull the slack out of the cable's by pulling the slack towards the front of the car before releasing the springs 👍

Thx medic. I know this is a old vid. But finally took the time to align my shifter. And it shifts so smooth now. Almost scary smooth. Also what's crazy is that rubber boot thingy. Mine is torn in 3 diff ways. But never messed with it. Had the car since 2015 and only have about 25k on it.

3 years ago I replaces my motor in my golf. Only driven it maybe 5 times since. Got it out again today & my first test ride the shifter was insanely stiff left/right, but up/down was normal. I had to take off in 3rd then after a few minutes I was able to get back into 1/2. After multiple test drives I never was able to get 5/6 or Reverse. Hoping to go back tomorrow and do the adjustment but just want to make sure I’m clear about one part, when pulling slack out of the cables before releasing springs do you pull the cable towards the grille or towards the firewall/inside of car? Praying this adjustment will fix my issue

You must use an exact 5 mm rod to properly adjust this unit. See the great videos DieselGeek and Deutch Auto Parts, DAP as well as the Humble Mechanic to do the proper, full installation.
This is the ONLY way to achieve a proper alignment. By the way, I have just purchased the DAG Short Shifter and it far exceeds any short shifter out there. It eliminates the terrible rubber parts and springs going from the shifter itself to the clutch via the cables. That means all the slop is gone.
The 5 mm rod can be ordered for under $10 from Dieselgeek and it comes free with the DAG unit.

I know it's an old video but I just wanted to mention that the 4mm allen wrench didn't work for me. I installed the Torque Solutions solid bushings on my car. When placing the 4mm allen wrench I noticed that it didn't fit snugly in the hole and when letting go of the shift knob it would move slightly to the right and cause the shifter to not be aligned properly. Even reverse would just pop back up but still in gear and 5th and 6th gear would not go in. I was able to center it more by grabbing the shift knob and align it with the hole and since I was alone I had to tie it with zip ties to the steering wheel so it would maintain position while unlocking the transmission. It feels good now but just to be safe, I will be using the proper tool next time or an allen wrench that fits better. Also it didn't fix the crunchyness in my transmission so not really happy with the mod. I guess I'll have to live with it. The shifter feels slightly different but I don't really think is a necessary mod to be honest. Hopefully when I get the solid puck style dogbone mount it will make shifting under load smoother

So will this help fix my issue of physically putting it into first feeling rough? Also 1st to 2nd feels rough but I’m talking about the shift knob feels a bit clunky and I’m not sure if this is how you’d fix that problem

2:52 is what is confusing me. You’re talking about a finger, what does this look like? I can’t see it because it’s blurry in the video. What exactly do I have to press so that the shifter will move freely when the transmission is locked?

My son owns a 2017 gti mk 7 just his car wouldn’t go in gear while on but was going in gear when it was off . So he assumed it was the clutch . He replaced it with a DKM kit clutch along with clutch master cylinder and new bleeder hydraulic line and we still can’t get it in gear. What else could be the issue

So I just installed a euro OEM shifter and had my gears are absolutely swapped. Had to take it to the dealer who I paid 163 to try to align it and still was not right! I need your help desperately. Does the car need to be in the gear that it needs to be locked to? I was confused about that part as undoing the spring would cause the rear cable to shift or potentially back out of place more. Further throwing everything off. I pulled them towards the front and locked them to no avail before I took the car to VW today. I'm scared to try and make it better as they did fix it SOME. Have no idea if they did this or not. but 1st to 2nd is bad and 5th as well. I know it's just gate cable alignment that's throwing me a curve ball.

I just bought my GTI MK 7.5 MT three weeks ago. I noticed shifting from first to second had a split second delay. It was as if there was a gate that didn't allow me to shift into second gear immediately. It kinda throws off my timing. Is this a common thing for GTIs?

Hello, I have ordered and installed the ECS full kit after watching your videos. I tried the 2nd to the shortest short shift hole, and just one weight on it, but I found that 1st gear is very hard to put into. I did the shifter cable readjustment that did not help, what help us to a longer shift, and that help. Do you have any experience with that or know how can I fix it. I would love to use a shorter shift haha. Thx very much. Cheers

    • @tomdoe1234
      @tomdoe1234 Před 6 lety

It only has a 162lbs of torque so not as bad. Also absolutely no turbo lag which makes it easier to modulate the power. The turbo lag on a GTI is really bad which adds to the difficulty controlling the wheel spin. I guess I would have kept the GTI if it were a stick, but overall I still think it's a shit car. Not sure how you could go from the S2000 to that POS and be happy driving it. I sure couldn't the S2000 which I only test drove before buying a G35 coupe was an awesome car but two seats with two kids wasn't going to do it. I could have got one in 2006 for 27K and it would still be worth 20K which is absolutely amazing
