www.carbonfiberviolin.com Gary Wahl, violinist with the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra shares his thoughts on the Gayford Carbon Fiber Violin. February 1, 2017
I have never heard a player in an orchestra give an evaluation like this before. Apparently the conductor and his fellow players welcomed the new instrument, no wood snobbery going one as one might expect, which is nice to hear!
@@Cambridge792 It depends on the instrument. Some carbon fibers and carbon composites are about the same as an average wooden violin. Some are much heavier.
People like having that C string. I have a Dudley 5 string that I foolishly just had to have. After a couple of years, you get tired of having to look for and buy another $20-$60 string (unless you like Helicores, bois), custom sized cases for your pig of a fiddle, cludgy homemade mutes, and relentless wolf tones. I like 4 string fiddles better. You just can't get a 5 string in a violin body that sounds right. It's not physically possible. As in, actual physics.

But, but where is the hide glue, you must use hide glue.
very good Gary!
So it's lighter then a wooden violin?
Yes, carbon fiber is much lighter.

Powerful endorsement
Why does it have five strings? Doesn't seem suitable for classical music...
Why not? Its a violin.. and a viola!!!

finally... wood is obsolete.
CF has nowhere the dynamics of a Baroque Violin. Good for Forte and Forte.
Eww 5 strings
I came close to buying a five string but chose a 4. I don't regret it.
I almost bought a five string cuz I have hoarder mentality. More is better but common sense took over
