I am so happy that Martin Logan upped their game. This speaker looks and sounds like it performs well above their previous Motion line, 60XTi and 40i, which by the way to me sounded beautiful. I am glad I opted not to get the 60XTi, these new speakers are now on my short list without question. For now I am going to enjoy what I have, but now I have The speaker I want to shoot for. Oh and by the way, I love the simple "M" logo on the speaker, it is so much more classy than their "Martin Logan" written logo. These speakers look so beautiful in the black/walnut finish. Thanks for the review.

I need help! I just auditioned the xt F100's and Polk r700's. After your review, and a few others, I was convinced the f100's were going to be my next speakers. Since they aren't cheap, I wanted to hear them first, before I pulled the trigger. I asked to audition the r700's, as well, so I had something to compare them to. I drove 3 hours to hear these F100's. They set up the Polks first and I listened for almost an hour straight. They sound amazing! They set them up on the Denon x4800h, since that's the receiver I currently have and put it on pure direct mode, no amp. I loved what I was hearing. There was a body and texture that I was missing with my current Klipsch. The bass was impressive. I never felt like a sub was needed. Everything I listened to, in tidal, sounded great. After almost an hour I had them switch to the F100's. I was expecting to be blown away especially with how impressive the r700's sounded. I listened to the exact same tracks in the same order. Immediately I was disappointed. The richness, especially in the vocals, seemed to disappear. I no longer felt the bass. It felt like so much of what I loved about the Polks was missing. It felt like the f100's were further away and if I turned them up they sounded harsh to my ears. I could tell they had a wider and deeper sound stage. I could tell the highs were more detailed. While the Polks were good, the ML's separate the sounds better, almost like every sound was coming from different speakers. They just seemed sterile and almost surgical, with no body. They actually felt brighter than my 15 year old Klipsch Icon WF35's. In fact, they had a very similar sound to my WF35's. Granted, I have never run them without a sub, but I enjoy my WF35's with a sub more than I did the F100's without a sub. What's going on here? Why did it immediately sound like they took the wind out of the sails when they switched to the f100's? Why was I blown away by the R700's and disappointed with the F100's? Am I missing something? I was all set to buy the F100's along with the center and rears, but after listening to them I was disappointed. I listened to them for about an hour and toward the end I forgot what the Polks sounded like and started to feel like maybe they sounded better than I thought. They still felt like I was being shouted at from far away, but I was enjoying them toward the end of my session. I asked to switch back to the Polks and wow... Everything came alive again. This really was a night and day difference. Not subtle in the least. I have never listened to other speakers besides my own. I have no frame of reference for what "high end" is supposed to sound like. This was my first experience ever doing an A/B comparison. While I have a x4800H, I also have an Emotiva XPA5 gen3 amp for my bed layer and a Marantz MM7055 for my ceiling speakers. I wonder if my amp would make the ML's sound better and that's what was missing. Also I thought the Polks looked nicer. The finish of the ML's looked plastic and the front baffle didn't fit properly. It didn't sit flush with the cabinet. I could easily push it flush with my fingers, one corner at a time, but it immediately bounced back. Could it be that these were floor models that got beat up? They did specifically say they took the r700's out of the box, just for my audition because they didn't have any on display. I wonder if something was off and I didn't hear them like they should sound. The highs, clarity and sound stage were impressive, but Bright, and bass and texture were missing. Was I listening to a defective, or underpowered speaker? did I listen to the wrong songs? Maybe the addition of the subs and/amp would help? Or maybe I enjoy a less refined sound more? Lol

While I don’t know this product I did buy ML Motion 60XT speakers at full retail when they first came out. I then immediately bought the matching 60XT center speaker and two JBL floor standing speakers for the rear surround sound. It was a big investment but I ne er for one moment regretted it. Over the years I get more and more enjoyment and entertainment. I have watched thousands of movies and millions of hours of music. The music gets better! As ignorant as I was about hi fi I went with the most money I could afford in the space I had. They are the heaviest speakers you will ever own mine are 65 pounds of dead weight. So heavy. The mellow sweet sound is a result of the very strong cabinet that keeps the air moving in the speaker and not waisting energy pumping up the cabinets. Very powerful units. Two bass speakers one mid range and a folded tweeter. I only had one shot and I was very satisfied very satisfied indeed. Very strong units.

  • @bradbortner2601
    @bradbortner2601 Před rokem +4

I went and demoed these at a Magnolia store at Best Buy. They did not seem much to know how to demo them. They were positioned way too far apart for the distance, and the only amps they had to drive them with were not two channel. My observations in this context is that the imaging was really really good, as was the mid range. I was not, however, as blown away by the base as I expected. I have no idea if that is due to them using subpar amplification, or something about the set up.
Mentally, I was comparing them to PSB t2 speakers I have at home, supplemented with a SB3000 pro subwoofer.
This is the challenge with trying out new speakers these days. The only real way to do it is order from someone with a decent trial period, but then one has to deal with prospect of shipping really heavy speakers back if they don’t work out. I miss the days of lots of good audio shops to go try speakers out! There is a similar problem with Polk. There is nowhere to hear them in the Greater Boston area.

I have been enjoying Martin Logan's for about five years. I had a pair of Motion 4's tacked on, as my Surrounds, anchored to a Motion 8 center. Coupled to a pair of ADS L-810's . Call them vintage , but for about 900 a pair, THEY beat the snot of any modern speaker. (Some of the new speakers, costing 2-3 ) grand. Several months ago, I made the mistake of selling the ADS speakers, and pulled the Trigger on a new pair of Martin Logans ; F''1's. (This is where I didn't understand what ML was thinking.) There were four iterations of basically the same speaker), All sharing the same case. F1's F100's and an XT slapped on to it. Then , with a slight MOD, THE F2 system was born. F200 , F200 XT. (which in my opinion, made no sense. ) THE Woofers went from 5.5 " to 6.5". And, by that point; It was getting too expensive. THE speakers were returned.
Three years ago; I upgraded the Center to a Motion 30, and my surrounds got bumped to Motion 15's. Everything thing changed. I had sold a pair, of B%W's 685 , and had transplanted my Motion 15's as my main speakers. Off the charts, amazing sound, was an understatement. More over- The little speakers put out sound, I could hardly believe.
I am now running four of them , matched with M.L 400 Sub. In this configuration, they are something incredible. And, still blow me away.
My recommendation, Don't spend 18-2500' dollars on the Towers. Do, instead , run the Quad 15's, and a Sub setup. You won't be disappointed.

Maybe it's my ears, room, or other equipment, but I didn't find the sound to be that much different from the 60Xti as they are both incredible speakers. In testing I had the subs off and no eq, so it was just the speaker and my room.
I don't know how many times I listened to the same songs trying to hear the differences. If I did hear differences they were subtle and at this price I expected to easily hear the differences. I was 12 hours off the suggested break-in time so maybe that would have made a difference?
I tried movies as well, the John Wick nightclub scene. Once again no sub or eq and both speakers were amazing. I think it was the first time I've watched that scene with my subs off and I was impressed by how well each speaker handled the scene. The bass was excellent and the gunshots were piercing. The only difference I did hear, and it was very obvious, was near the end of the scene with the first gunshot that hit John Wick in the bullet proof vest. For some reason that one gunshot, each of the four times I watched it, had some extra sound effect playing with it or something on the F100's where it was just a normal gunshot on the 60Xti's.
I do like the looks of the F100's over the 60Xti's and going in I was excited to hear these new awesome speakers, but for me there just wasn't enough improvement for me to keep them.

I agree with you, i m owner of the 60xti, i listened the F200 and was not very impressed. Bass is going deeper for sure, but i use 2 sb3000 anyway so it is not critical. I prefer the classy look of old 60xt(i), but it is a matter of taste. Conclusion: 60xti are a big bargain imho

@@yenbbc8840 If you are in the States then I would demo the F200's from Crutchfield and see if you like them since they have a great return policy. That's what I did and ultimately didn't think the F100's were worth the price over the 60Xti. I did demo the B100's first so I had both of them and was able to return both the F100 and the B100 with no issue.

Something else I figured out is that several times you compared the R700’s in the review so they must be a very good speaker as well, not as pretty to look at but still very good sound especially for the money.

I bought the discontinuing ML XT60’s three years ago as my late-in-life entry into higher end audio. Since then, I have heard others be unimpressed by them, noting allegedly poor internal bracing and resonances not afflicting other comparable brands. It seemed that the XT60i’s (never heard them) offered incremental improvement, including better bracing. Still, I have rarely seen or read anyone really impressed by ML loudspeakers. I like “mellow” music more than acid rock or hip-hop, and my ML’s provide all I need. I appreciate your review of the XT F100’s and hope to hear them one day, but I doubt I will be buying them anytime soon. I doubt I’d get much for my XT60’s and I don’t have the room or budget to splurge $5,000 on an additional set of tower speakers.

As always, terrific review Andrew and Kristi! While you mentioned that you probably won't be reviewing the B100 bookshelf speakers, I would love to hear your thoughts on those. While I have a smaller room than yours, It's really the price difference that is critical for me. It looks like you could buy a pair, including a decent subwoofer for half the cost of the towers, and I already own a nice REL subwoofer. If the sound of the bookshelves with a sub (more for music than home theater) competes favorably with the towers, it would represent a far more economical option.

      3) the new "Nomex Reinforced Kevlar cone" for the 6.5 inch midrange woofer

I wonder how the F200's would have scored? According to Martin Logan, it's not just about more base. There is more resonance in the F200s. I am torn. My only reference is listening to Crutchfield's Compare and Listen. Martin sounds better there, but so does the Lumina 5's.
