Tesla Model Y - Camp Mode Road Trip 3k Miles Part 1

  • Over the holiday season, I took an epic solo trip in my Tesla Model Y. I was afforded the opportunity to go anywhere I wanted to go and ultimately decided to drive to Key West.
    This journey was about 3,000 miles over just a few days. Along the way, I decided it was a great opportunity to document what it is like living in the car, using camp mode.
    For the mattress, if you have the space, the 6" tri-fold foam mattress is the most comfortable option. I was fortunate enough to be solo on this trip and slept so well in the Model Y.
    Along the way, I was able to really disconnect and recharge by getting some alone time. Road tripping in a Tesla is so much fun, and the fact that they Tesla Model Y has so much room in the back makes it the ideal car to travel in. No need for hotels when you can sleep comfortably in the car.
    Part 1 is the journey down to Key West. This 2 day trip encompassed over 1,500 miles and included some quick stops along the way. Overall efficiency was excellent on this trip, despite the very cold temperatures early on.

    Moved to FL from the Pacific NW and lived there for 10 years before moving back home. A family member visiting once told us "it is amazing how terrible service is in a state that depends 100% in tourism". I could not agree more. I'd like to say that ass at that place was the exception; but our experience has been that he is pretty much the rule.

    I camp in my model Y at State Parks. To create the illusion of camping, pitch a small pup tent to put stuff in over night. Get a site with 50 amps (no sketchy outlets I have seen melted ones) and wake up with plenty of range.

      @Geckogold Před 3 lety +2

      @@Wilsonthernsby Teslas are some of the safest cars on the roads. Aside from numerous safety features in Autopilot, it also has a very good crash safety rating. There are numerous videos on youtube showing Teslas getting into accidents, and the occupants getting out slightly bruised/battered but otherwise fine. There was also one where a Model X was T-boned at various speeds, and never rolled over, instead just falling back down due to the low center of gravity from the battery pack.
      Aside from that, there's also the over the air updates where the car gets new features over time, the convenience of parking in your garage or driveway, plugging in, and letting the car charge while you sleep. And let's not forget the performance, which is just one of the things that makes Teslas cool.
      Of course, the best way to see this is to test drive one. It's one thing to just say all this stuff, it's another to actually see how they drive and perform.

Camp grounds are private so state rule does not apply. So are Hotel Parking lots. The Keys restriction only applies to public property.

    @FreedomToRoam86 Před 3 lety +2

    My guess is that they didn't want you taking up a space that an RV would otherwise fill, and because people who camp in their cars or trucks often pee on the ground at night, and are often homeless. And they want their campground to be family friendly and spending money at their store. All of which they see single people as not being. I'm saying that because while taking care of COVID-19 pt's all spring, I built a bed and shelves/cupboards into the back of my pickup to have something to do between shifts. Come summer and few COVIDs, I bugged out for vacation to camp across the country. I found that if I wanted to camp at a campground, when I showed them my Portapotty in the truck, and told them I was just there for 1 night on my way to whichever National Forest or park, then they were usually OK with it. Fortunately, out west there is far more dispersed camping areas where you can just pull over and camp and wake up happy in some quiet beautiful place.
    I am looking forward to doing some similar camping in my Cybertruck when it comes. BTW, if you are in the midwest, you can camp the night cheap at tons of little town parks that have camping spots. I used Allstays Camp and RV to find camp sites across the country going west from Wisconsin.

    Thanks. Like your charging schemes. My general attitude is 'you never know...' (you know Key West? might be a sharknado..) so I always fill up. Now that I'm driving a Tesla Model Y Long Range, I'll go 80-90% unless I need a nap - love those Tesla naps. Or if I need the range and the margin. (So why the heck can't Tesla give you a split charging time x minutes to 80-90% and then the x * 1.4 to get to 100%?? (you know where it says 23 minutes remaining for 30 minutes), and why isn't there an alarm in the car when it's charged? ) I've added another factor, if people are waiting for the chargers, then I'll just charge for the range I need so I can clear the space sooner.
    Probably going to use your link for the insulated panels. I am wondering about the hassle vs energy savings trade off. I loved boon docking in my Prius V when it's snowing outside. The Tesla should be even nicer ... but I can see after the first half inch installing the panels on the roof window - you can't see anything except cold snow. At least in the Model Y I'm not going to get stuck. (I've got chains for both the Prius and the Y, the Prius was still pretty wonky, I expect the Y should be great.)
    What jackasses at the RV park. When I think RV I think off-road. RV parks seem to be run by bigots - On CZcams it is an endless litany of nonsense. If your rig is 10 years old - get lost.
    If someone said, 'Explain to me why a Tesla is good?' you'll smile and talk to them for as long as they're willing to listen. The rudeness shows that he knows he's being a jerk, probably an EV bigot. Why do some people think the best American engineered and made car in history is somehow bad?

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  Před 3 lety +1

      So the window covers are totally worth it if you camp in the car a few times or more. If it’s just 1 night 1 time, it’s probably too big an investment. They are insulated, and I believe it would make a difference on keeping the climate comfortable in the car. It’s funny how much hate there is on Tesla’s. These “good ol boys” who love their American made (insert truck) but hate ALL EVs. I don’t know why more people don’t support Tesla as they are an actual American company!

    Great videos! I may have misunderstood, but it looked like you didn't have regen on the first part of your trip because the battery was cold. You were advising navigating to a supercharger to precondition the battery to get regen faster. That will work, but if you schedule your morning charge to 100% to start automatically rather than changing the limit to 100% when you wake up, in addition to starting the charge in the morning it will precondition the battery so it is already warm when you leave the house. You still won't have much regen because the battery is full, but it will be warm and you will get it sooner. Also, the heat pump / octovalve uses heat from the battery to heat the cabin while you are driving so with the Model Y and new Model 3's it's especially important to preheat the battery with scheduled charging so that the battery can start warmer for regen.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
