Tesla Model Y - Review, 25,000 Miles Later

- We have now put 25,000 miles on our LR AWD Tesla Model Y. What a better time than now to do a review with so many miles.
We have owned this Tesla Model Y for 11 months now and the 25k miles are broken out between 8,550 miles of road trips, and 16,450 miles of commute and every day driving.
How has the Tesla Model Y held up during these last 11 months? What has gone wrong, and what has gone great?
Overall, this review is focused on the true cost of owning the Model Y for 25k miles, the maintenance required, my favorite features, as well as the must have accessories.
We have traveled far on 4 road trips now, towed a 3k lb plus trailer, camped in the car, and so much more. I am excited to share with you the unbiased full review of this amazing electric family car.

Honestly when I started watching this video I was like “this dude is gonna be boring and won’t explain much”. Surprisingly I really like the video and good points and really well explain a lot of info for only 30mins videos now I’m gonna watch your other videos lol. Me and my wife are thinking on getting the model y. Thanks for the time you put in the videos and good info!
So glad you gave it a shot! Happy to have you here! Plenty of existing content as well as the weekly content to learn and absorb!
Love how genuine he is too, doesn’t have to be a show host and over exaggerate everything when explaining simple tips and facts
I've had my Model Y for about a month and a half now - snagged the standard range when it was still available for website configuration! I have been absolutely loving mine. For anyone considering purchasing- you can still call to order the standard range Y! Off menu item :) Just dropped by to say I've been watching your videos over the last 3 months or so to help me prepare for my own Y- very informative, and you've been really helpful in me making my decision to get the Y over the 3! Cheers from Texas!
Cheers indeed! And congratulations!
Congrats Sean. Welcome to the club👍❤️💯
I just ordered my LR model Y. I can't wait to finally take delivery!
Woohoo! Congrats!
I have owned 15 Tesla's now since 2013, the one thing I learned way back in 2014 is to never buy a new Model of any Tesla for the first year they will continue to update it dropping the value. Always wait a year to buy the first model.
Yea, that’s good thought
15 in 7 years? They must not last very long.. Or you are full of shit.

Just bought my model Y yesterday. Went in person to order it (off menu). Your videos have been very informative. Keep up the great work!
Woohoo, congratulations!
Did you get an existing car from inventory or a brand new made to order?
@@dkras I bought mine off menu as well. The car is new but was already built out. They only had a few in stock, but luckily they had the exact configurations I was looking for. I think you can call, but I actually went in to one of the retail locations and chose it with the help of one of the reps.
@@dkras Got existing inventory. I just wanted the basic white one anyways
@@cphu72 I have the red Y and love it but my 3 was the white (which was extra $ in 2018) and I have to say I miss the white. It’s easy to keep clean and it looks sharp
My husband and I did a little road trip yesterday to enjoy the nice weather. Three cars at the supercharger along the highway- all three of us had white Model Y!
Nice
I bought the standard range model y off menu on Feb 28th. Delivery day is tomorrow! So excited!!! Thanks for all the informative uploads.
Awesome! Congrats!
I have two kids under the age of 3, thinking about moving from our current 2019 Model X to Model Y. This video was super helpful as we decide what we'd like to do.
its a great family car! You will miss those captains chairs in the back though.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy we have a 7 seater model X. with the 2nd row being a bench. We thought we’d use the 3rd row from time to time, but never. Our kids love the falcon wings, but I am getting aggravated with them being slow and extremely buggy.
Best most useful review so far on the Y model I have come across, kudos from Montreal, Canada. Waiting on my SR RWD to be delivered.
Cheers!
You will love it.
We are getting our Model Y in just couple weeks and we CAN'T WAIT!! My husband has been researching Tesla for a couple years now and we have always wanted one. Things have finally fallen into place and we ordered a 7 seater a couple weeks ago!
That’s so awesome, you guys are going to love it!
Congratulations on 25K! I just picked up my MY standard range yesterday! So this is the first video of yours that I’m watching as a fellow Tesla owner. And like a lot of others your videos really helped me with the decision and preparation to get the car. And I’m loving it so far - even got an update last night!
Super congrats! Such an awesome feeling once it’s yours!
Now this is what u call an informative review. Love it thank you so much. Im going with the white on white .
Woohoo, that white interior is where it’s at!
Here because my wife wants one to sit in our garage because she doesn't drive. Great video!
Haha
Being a shareholder and potential future buyer, this was an awesome review!! Thank you for sharing!
Cheers
My brother in-law just completed 200,000 miles on his Tesla (in 8 years) and he enjoyed every moment of it
That’s so awesome
Great video. With two young kids stopping to charge on a long trip is never an issue for me. It takes me 20-30 minutes for bathroom and snack breaks so it works out perfect.
Ha, same with these kids
Wow! I've had mine a year this month also but I only have 11,000 miles on it! I fully agree... best car I've ever owned.
Cheers
Thanks for the fair and honest review. I ended up ordering a LRM3 - awaiting delivery!
Woohoo congratulations!
Picking up my LRM3 Monday!
My Tesla mattress fits comfortably in the storage under the trunk. Much smaller but not sure if it’s as comfortable because I’ve not used it yet.
Your great at covering so much of the important stuff we all need to know! Thank you!
Cheers!
30000 miles on a set of tyres is incredible! Almost unbelievable. If I get 16000 in the UK I’ve done well and I drive sensibly.
16k miles on tires is not good lol
Another great vid. Also just took delivery of my MY yesterday, and I used your referral as well, so thank you!! Hope you and your family are well, keep up the great vids, they helped me a lot along the buying process. :)
So glad to hear and congratulations!
I have a 2014 model s and the cargo space is AMAZING. I love the car so much
Great cars
I love how you look and talk as the superhero and the villain at the same time.
MUAHAHA
Excellent Report!
Very informative!!!

This is great news. I live in Chicago suburbs, but barely put 10k a year on my car now. Thanks BTG.

This was really good. Ordered my MYP on the 4th - thanks for your videos in helping me pull the trigger!
Woohoo, congratulations! I hear 0-60 in 3.5 seconds is good for your overall health
@@BeardedTeslaGuy It absolutely is 😁! Had my MYP for a week and loving every minute of it!
This is one of the best Tesla videos out there. I'm pretty sure I've watched them all waiting for my MY delivery. XD
Thanks so much, hope you get yours soon!
Picking my Model Y LR up today!
Hell yea, congrats!!
I picked up my Model Y on December the 13th 2020, and I use it for business (sales and service in Pest Control), as of today March 6,2021 I have put - 7823 miles on my Mr. Frost. What I have noticed is that it does much better on range when in Chill mode than when in Standard. I think the car is amazing and it is a joy to drive, just wish the basic autopilot had lane change functionality. Hate that I have to exit autopilot when moving out of the way or having to over take. C’mon Elon, give us that functionality.
Yea, auto lane change is all I want!
I like trying my naps after 2 hours of driving, so it actually saves me time since I don't have to find a rest area.
And that climate control on demand is clutch!
So, with Tesla constantly bringing out changes, inprovements, enhancements, corrections, baffling statistics and percentages, your car is out-of-date as soon as you get delivery! You did not cost in the time you spent searching out the extras such as spending hours adding an item that is standard in other cars - door seals. That aside - excellent video.
It’s really like an iPhone. Next years model will have a better camera lol
Love your content! I’ve picked up a few accessories at your recommendation for my soon-to-be delivered LR MY seven seat
Woohoo! Congrats!!!
I’m thinking that road tripping is coming back because of Tesla. So fun to drive.
100%
Great video! I have a model 3 and have a love hate relationship with Tesla. On one hand, I shouldn't EVER have to take it back to the shop for manufacturing problems. On the other hand, I love everything about the car, its a blast!
That’s what it is...love hate relationship lol
Great review. But for 50k, you should not need to add seals to doors are have color variances. I hope they correct all that soon.
I had experience on a 1000 mile rt last week end. On the final portion, my model y said 13% was left with about 25 miles to get to my brother's house and I began to really sweat if we would make it. navigation calculated my arrival with 11%. then about a half way, a warning was flashed up saying 'there are no known charging facilities within range of your batterie's ability to get you there.' There is a real big area in middle south Georgia where there are no charging facilities. Not to fear, trusting Tesla, i rolled up in my Brother's driveway with 11% as Tesla said i would. I immediately converted one of his welding outlets to 14-50 and a full charge by morning.
Yea the on board trip estimate is really accurate
Model 3 owner here... I've got the same interior mats and highly recommend. On the hitch, Torklift Central makes one that prices out to $505.68 with the wiring harness ($322 for just the hitch). It's rated for the same 3500 pounds towing capacity (350 pounds tongue weight) that the factory one is. It took me about 3-4 hours working v e r y d e l i b e r a t e l y. I only use it for a bike rack so I did not do the wiring harness. If you're comfortable pulling the bumper cover and the crash bar off, you can save some money and do this one yourself. Make sure you have a torque wrench.
Yea if you’re not going to tow, go aftermarket for sure
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I'd still go with the Torklift (not much choice to go aftermarket on an Model 3 anyway); to the best of my knowledge. It bolt's on the same way the stock one does; so much so, that when Tesla started offering a tow package in Europe, I asked the Torklift guys if Tesla was sourcing it from them (they're not; or at least they said they're not). It just boils down to proper installation; tightening the bolts to the proper torque spec; make sure you have a torque wrench.
Thanks for all the awesome videos! Just purchased our model y with your referral link. So nice to have the info from your videos before deciding to purchase this for our family.
That’s great to hear! Thanks so much for supporting the channel
I’m just starting my research journey on Tesla and this video was incredible!!! I also have kids so I really appreciate how you went in depth on all the things! Thank you!!!

Right on man at the end of September I’ll be getting my Tesla Y I can’t wait .
So exciting congrats!
@@BeardedTeslaGuy thank you man is there anything else I should be aware of ? Or what else do I have to look forward to ?
Door seal kit on my 3 didn't drop noise, but keeps sills clean.
Worth it.
Have white on both my cars.
Only have FSD on 3, miss lane change.
It’s strange, the door seal kit is one of those add on that I really like, but didn’t really do a lot on sound.
@@BeardedTeslaGuy the 3's sills don't get all gross with salt. So worth it.
I think the double pane help the Y a little. Haven't done the door seals yet.
After three Model Y test drives over the last year we finally placed an order for a Pearl White on black AWD Dual Motor with 20” wheels this past weekend. As tempting as it is I have always followed my father’s advice to NEVER purchase the first year production of a new model. Besides getting better fit and finish we will be getting all of the new updates like the single rear aluminum casting, laminated windows, auto dimming mirrors, Sentry Mode storage device and USB moved to the glovebox, updated center console, updated taillights/headlamps, etc. I only wish that Tesla would update the old school 12v lead battery to a Li-Ion battery like they did for the refreshed S and X.
Smart on your part, congrats! And I hear that Tesla is working on a lithium alternative to the 12v that is starting in the model S
I'm glad that even with the "worst" efficiency it's still 2 times better than my 4 cyl car
Haha
I am a automotive painter. Bumpers not matching is normal. Some colors or worse then others but normal. It's not a tesla problem. Take a drive around any other dealership and you will find new cars with the bumpers not matching. Even in a body shop we can paint the hole front end or rear-end with the bumpers at the same time out of the same gun, same painter and same paint. And like I said some colors will not match perfectly.
awesome review - I got my Y at the end of 2020 - and I'm loving it! I should do about 20,000 in the first year. I am super-envious of your road trip to Marathon!!!! I just can't swing the time to do it (I'm in SE IN - not far from Indy). Thanks again for a terrific review!
It was such an awesome trip. Kind of a nice "recharging" opportunity

Thanks for the recreational hitch info. Just what I needed. Great review of your 25 k experience.

Great review, the only thing putting me off in buying any tesla is the low range and the charging duration it sounds so annoying, life is too short, Will revisit in 5 years when battery technology improves.
5 years time will make today’s tech look pretty dated I’d think.
Love the 3d Max Spider liner, I think that for dog owners, they may like the 3d max spider in the cargo, my dog slips less when standing. oh and for the rotation of tires.. I recommend Discount tire for tires or for rotation.. they know how to lift your Tesla. It is crazy that you need to put the door seal kit in.. Tesla should do that for over $40k
Ha, yea, all good stuff, thanks for sharing
This video is amazing! I am soooo excited to be able to call the mode y mine, hopefully this year!

Great review thanks. Ours is due march 15 to march 21. LR AWD, will get the screen protector, got the wall charger installed already, have the all weather mats and the tire repair kit and mump. Yes, hard to select white but we did, glad to hear your opinion on the white. Feel like a kid waiting for christmas..
Oh man that white is 🔥
Super video thank you
Mine is being built
sweet, congrats!
The reason the tires were "terrible" is most likely because they are summer tires. In anything other than really cold winter conditions summer tiers are the best. I used to live in Houston Tx and now live in Dallas and I run summer tires on my car all year round and love them. Except when we had that snow storm a few weeks ago. During that time I had absolutely no traction at all. But I love summer tiers for their grip. Also you said "30k miles on a gas car doesn't sound good" it all depends on the tires. Super sporty summer tires usually last around that maybe a little less (usually i get anywhere from 20k to 30 miles)
Excellent video with lot of information. Thanks for taking time to share all this information.
Cheers
Thanks for this. I’ve had my M3 about 2 months and I’m so in love with this car. Regarding the tires, mine are called summer tires. Never heard tires called that before but I’m sure it’s fine for Texas.
Yea, you’ll be fine in Texas. I mean it’s not like it EVER snows there right? Haha
If you have a model 3 p be extremely careful on ice in those factory tires. I am in alabama got mine in Aug. Under 40 degrees they get hard... meaning no grip compared to 60 or 70 degrees. I am waiting on my all weather set to be shipped.
Nice video. I ordered my car and should receive it next week.
I have test drove Tesla 4 times before my purchase so take it with a grain of salt.
A few negatives i noticed while test driving is:
1. you can’t adjust the headrest. Now that part makes absolutely no sense. I’m not even talking a power adjuster but a regular manual headrest adjustment would be fine with me
2. No blind spot alert system. Huh???? With all the cameras and features in car no blind spot alert. That is very confusing. Yes I know that the touch screen in car shows cars around and if you turn on indicator it the car next to you will turn red on screen. But that’s the only way. There isn’t no audio alert no visual alert by side view mirrors. This car alerts you audio wise for everything but this one telsa didn’t think would be important
Now I say this to mention two big cons I have had with car while researching. That being said I still purchased the car. That’s how much I like the car even with those cons. But those two cons are big ones. So test those out among others to make informed decision
The car is fantastic, and I am on the same page about blind spot. The thought is likely that FSD you won’t need it, but that’s not how I roll
At 2:00 in I already suspect this is going to be your best video yet.
We got a standard Y after Elon dropped the price $2000, and then removed the car from the website.
I'm astonished that this car is available at under $40,000 that I've ordered the license plate Kodakmmt because I think more than any other car the model why represents the final nail and big autos coffin.
About to take it on a 4,000 mi road trip, Then probably going to trade it for a long range 3 row after they start building them in Austin.
(Hoping these cars will start coming with either adaptive or air suspension, as the bigger battery cars don't have the same agile feel that I love about the SRY and my dual motor 3.)
I would have kept the tires and used them for summer, but I like having a winter set.
Yea Austin cars I’m hoping will include all the new stuff
Apparently, Americans aren’t used to switching over their tires twice a year between winter and summer driving. In your situation I’d have considered the supplied tires as summer grade and bought winter grade to supplement them. Lately, Canadian dealers are often including an extra set of 4 tires for the other season. BTW, there is no such thing as “all season” tires. At 7 degrees C (47F), winter tires out-perform “all-season” tires even on dry pavement.
Yea, we don’t typically switch tires for seasons here
I'm due for a new set of tires soon. I can't wait to replace my "all-seasons" with actual summer tires.
Great review. Wish the whole world worked in millimetres. 5/32 is a weird measurement and I’m from the Uk!
Lol, yea we like our standards over here for whatever reason
Excellent video, thank you sir and keep up the great work!
Cheers!

Ah man, I got the gearbox fluid service recommended error on my Model X as well after only 6,000 miles. They replaced the oil pump in mine. It happened while I was on an 80 mph highway and after about 30 minutes of driving with the "Ok to drive" warning it put up a new error that said "Service Required" and limited my power. I had to drive an hour at 58 mph on an 80 mph road at night. I didn't love it.
Oh man that would be sketch. Thankfully that didn’t happen to me

Awesome video
I try to make it a habit to not buy a vehicle in its first or second production years . Give them time to work the bugs out .
Probably a smart move on your part
I bought Model Y 2 months back. It's suspension really sucks for a costly car like this.
It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either
My white paint was perfect when my Y came at Christmas. Only issue so far is that the paint as already almost completely gone off the little bulge at the bottom of the rear door just in front of the rear tire. We live in the country and the gravel roads have taken a toll. I did expect this from seeing other people mentioning it and yes I did see some stick on 3M type product that could be applied but they seemed expensive and I don't think they would last very long on the gravel so one day I'll have to get some paint work done or a wrap or something before I sell it. My dually fenders do the exact same thing to the paint on the gravel roads. Just the nature of where we live I guess
Tesla has a smaller piece that you can put there that’s $40 or $50. May want to look into that
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I'll check it out. I didn't even think to look for something from Tesla. All I could find was different aftermarket ones that were like 750$ for one side of your car or whatever.
Good practical information well presented thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow that is a lot of issues, glad that they fixed them for you
Yea, early production car. Nice thing is there’s not a lot that hasn’t been fixed at the factory now
@@BeardedTeslaGuy I would love to get one, but currently we don't have Tesla reps here in Malta so if anything happens or needs some fix I would need to take the car to Italy - which is a heck of a long way :) so I guess will have to wait until they come here unfortunately

Now your just showing off. Haha good choice though!

Did you apply the ceramic coating on top of the PPF? Will the CC alone protect against road debris? I've done the PPF in my cars before and it was very difficult on the curved areas mainly, I cringe just to think on doing it again but it's cheaper than having it installed. I like your channel, great videos!
Ceramic goes on top of PPF. Ceramic will prevent things like swirls and light scratches. It will not stop rocks and road debris from chipping paint.
Can you expand a little more on why not to stay at RV parks and what you mean about camping sites with plug ins? I have an EV and planned to take advantage of the RV park plug ins because they have 50 amp plug ins.
RV parks seem to have rules against sleeping in a car. You will need to find campgrounds that have power at the sites instead
For long distance and full self driving option in Canada its $84,490....... maybe next year.
Ouch!
What happens when the warranty runs out, that is the major question. How expensive are the repairs going to be during a 10-15 year period when the upfront cost of the vehicle is already so high. Longevity has not been tested.
It’s the most valid question of them all. So far we only have the model S for reference and it has been known to hold stupid miles in longevity. We like to think the 3/Y can do the same, but only time will tell
Amazing Video Brother, thank you 🙏🏽 ♾
Cheers
Thank you so much. I needed this. so detailed.
Cheers
I am taking delivery of my 7 seater Model Y next weekend and this video is extremely encouraging. Thank you! Quick question on the Ceramic Coat and PPF products. It appears you have used both profucts - is there an order that you followed. Applying ceramic coat first before applying the PPF makes sense intuitively but want to confirm.
PPF has to go on first. It won’t stick to a ceramic surface
@@BeardedTeslaGuy d,
Thanks for your video

I'm waiting for Tesla to upgrade the suspension on the Model Y because from what I've seen and heard, it's pretty trash. If I'm going to pay a premium for one of these cars, the suspension better as smooth as a BMW's.
The harsh ride is from the 20”-21” rims. Standard Gemini wheels are really smooth driving
I owned a BMW M550 and have test driven a model Y performance, the suspension is actually maybe a bit smoother, certainly at least as good.
It’s not the best but it’s not the worst. Get the Gemini wheels, that will help
