Wow! I had no idea that team USA had won the 1996 world championships of hockey. The score was ironic because team Canada came back in the 2002 Salt Lake City gold medal final and won on American ice with the same score! That was sweet redemption!
This was the greatest hockey tournament I ever watched. Hockey is huge in New England where I am from and I knew we had a chance when I saw our lineup. The physical play on both sides was vicious. All our guys played great, especially Mike Richter. I am looking forward to the next Olympics with NHL players again. I also wish they would bring the Canada Cup back. The USA is not David anymore!

Your people were very crucial to us beating Canada in the 96 World Cup.i love the Hatcher Brothers and Tkachuk. Team USA had to man up to the Canadian power house. In my opinion, this is the greatest time for hockey. As someone who grew up in a market that did not have hockey, I got into the game after our city got an IHL team in 1990. What a great time to get into the game. Despite moving to Detroit in 05 my interest in the game has waned. Not because the Wings are not what they were but because I do not think the players today can stack up to the players of this era.
@@ibeleaf What I am saying is that despite the skill level being greater today (that is the case in all sports in all era's) that the game does not have the personality that it had during the mid-'70s through 2010 or so despite Ovechkin and McDavid. That is my opinion.
@@ibeleaf There is not "much more skill" now. Quite the opposite. It's all artificial. They removed the 2 line pass to artificially increase speed at the expense of physicality. Players in the 80s and 90s actually had to THINK and be CREATIVE to move the puck through the neutral zone. Now it's nothing but "bomb passes" and players skating with free reign up the ice without fear of being hit. The game was WAY BETTER in the 80s and 90s than it is today, and these guys, with modern NHL equipment, would SLAUGHTER the players of todays weak soft WUSS NHL.
I'm not sure about that. Sutter was a nasty player. I saw him fuck with Mess and Bukaboom at MSG. Sorry, Jeff, I spelled your name wrong. Don't forget, Canada had a bunch of hard hitting mother fuckers put there. Can we remember Scott Steven's, the best defense to ever play. He was a hard pipe hitting MF. He should be an NHL coach. We need a guy like that back in the league.
Michael Richter ladies and gentlemen, maybe the greatest goalie performance ever against maybe the mightiest Canadian team of all time, I say maybe because Patrick Roy was not on this team
@@frantisekruzicka5449not in that tournament and definitely not at that time might have been the greatest three game set by a goalie ever ask the mighty Canadian people see what they say they're not going to say Hasek... And that's no disrespect to him he was better than Mike Richter career wise but for those three games I don't think any goalie matches that especially the team he was playing against

It should make every person sick no matter what your stance is.
I was so, so hyped that finally the best of the best of the best would compete against each other in Bejing winter Olympics. And then, no, it would not happen.
@@thepreacher4810 On November 2, 2016 Chicago Cubs won the world series, coincidence ??? I think not. World cup would be great but it would need that break from NHL anyway and knowing that the sport in itself is not in the interest of NHL cause there`s no money involved in it so it wont happen.
I never understood why the Canadian fans would boo Brett Hull when his 1st choice was to play for Team Canada. Naturally he is going to play for the United States since they gave him the opportunity
What a great Tournament despite being on the wrong side of the finals. Practically hockey at it's Pinnacle. USA's roster was almost toe to toe with Canada's.
If Canada lost to Sweden….. I wonder what the US mindset would have been Ron Wilson mentioned how much they wanted to grab the wheel with Canada as the passenger , but we came within a goalpost of never happening
To be fair this video really undersells the US. They were finalists in the 91 Canada Cup, and that US team was loaded with young superstars. ‘96 was their peak…and people forget that core that carried over to the ‘02 Olympics too for how good that crop of US players were.
I saw the final at Wayne Gretzky's bar in Toronto. There were maybe a dozen of us from the US. It was so sweet seeing those Canucks losing their minds. The guy next to me went crazy when Hull scored. He kept going on about what a traitor he was and was supposed to be a Canadian. He kept saying, Canada is always number 1. I simply turned to him and said, 'Well, looks like it's US one and Canada zeo on the scoreboard.' I thought I was going to get punched :)
The U.S. won the 1996 World Cup of Hockey on Canadian ice in Montreal but Canada got their revenge on American soil in 2002 when we won Olympic gold in Salt Lake City!
speaking as a yankee, i rank this the #7 moment in north american non nhl hockey moment in history. game 3 of the finals in 96. and possibly the greatest goalie single game performance. tony esposito in game 2 of 72 summit series is close, 2nd . my 10 moments overall. 10. 1960 winter olympics gold medal game 9. 1987 canada cup final gm 2 8 1972 summit series gm 2 tony esposito performance 7. 1996 canada cup gm 3 mike richter performance 6. 1972 summit series gm 7 5.1987 canada cup gm 3 4. 1980 winter olympics gold medal game 3, 2010 winter olympics gold medal game 2. 1972 summit series gm 8 1. 1980 winter olympics usa vs soviet union
Dont kill me, but in my mind this win has had more of a lasting significant impact on the development of hockey in the US than 1980 **Of course without 1980, how many of the guys on the 96 team wouldve been there?
Let me tell you as a young New England American, I look back now and the roster that Canada had, it's unbelievable that team USA won, but we had a lot ofNew Englanders on the team and we border Canada. It was a sick tournament, but it should've been played in Boston or New York. This tournament did a lot for hockey in the US, not necessarily in my neck of the woods, but for the other parts of the US that is unfamiliar with hockey. GO BRUINS!!
if you look at their roster, that was the pinnacle of US hockey talent. Gretzky was just fading from his prime and Lemieux was unable to play. perfect storm.
I hear you on that. I grew up with Canadians getting my balls busted and this was my voice saying we can play to. That Canadian team was unbelievable and probably should have won. Canada had so many players to chose and some of my favorites, but team USA was a nasty team that played Candaian hockey. Unfortunately today, the US Canada rival doesn't exist because the kids from Boston are playing the Montreal kids at hockey tournaments at Jay Peak Ski Resort in Vermont. Also, hockey east in New England is playing the Canadian college teams. God Bless the USA 🇺🇸 and Canada 🇨🇦!
This is portrayed as David vs Goliath but come on, USA had a fantastic roster. On the Canadian side, Messier, Coffey and Gretzky were well past their prime and Cujo was an average goalie at that stage
These are the best tournaments. The real best vs the best.. But even if thats the most popular thing in hockey they're still not doing it. NHL needs to put out their star to play international,, it is not the same anymore. So many NHLers and fans wants a best vs best-tournment in hockey.
WHY after the FIRST game in Philadelphia were the next TWO games played up in Montreal ???? WHY ??? Why was is not FIRST game Philadelphia - SECOND game in Montreal - - THIRD game back to Philadelphia ???? IN THAT ROTATION OF LOCATIONS ???? AND who set that up ??????
3:52 - "Decades past dominance". That is truth with alterations, so to speak! Canada Cup (NHL international team All-Stars) on NHL rinks was Canada's home-turf and 4/5 won the gold medal. Only the Sovietunion managed to win once the gold medal (1981). But in the Olympics and IIHF World Championship tournaments, Team Canada had not been in recent decades a major player. Just look at the results; Canada had not won an Olympic gold medal since 1952 (not broken til 2002 = 50 YEARS) and not any medal since 1968 Olympics, where they won a Bronze medal. In the Olympics it had been beside the 1980 OG with Team USA, all European dominance for the medals. Sovietunion, Czechoslovakia and Sweden won most. In IIHF World Championship Tournaments, Canada had managed to make better results with the medals. They had won 2 years prior in 1994 the gold medal, but prior that it had been 33 YEARS = 3 decades since they had managed to win the gold (1961). In the 1970's only 1 Bronze medal in an entire decade - In the 1980's, 2 silver and 3 Bronze medals. So while Canada was a major player non the less, in the international perspective at the time, Canada was beside the 1996 World Cup not regarded as THE big dog on international ice. Again, Sweden, Russia, Czech Republic & recent major player Finland was in international ice perspective regarded higher. USA was always a 6th level player. And to clerify, NHL players was allowed to participate in the IIHF World Championships from 1976 and up. The Olympics, NHL players was allowed between 1998-2014. Yeah blame the NHL for this. The world wants NHL players but the league holds them back.
I was 14 and over at my girlfriends house watching that game. I remember that being the lowest I ever felt as a fan for Team Canada. But at least it wasn’t as bad as 1981. I still think Roy would have made a difference.
This tournament in 1996 displayed the best level of all around hockey in history including today.

What a great time to get into the game. Despite moving to Detroit in 05 my interest in the game has waned. Not because the Wings are not what they were but because I do not think the players today can stack up to the players of this era.
ovi could possibly pass gretzky, the game is different now but there is obviously much much much more skill. what the fuck are you talking about
@@ibeleaf What I am saying is that despite the skill level being greater today (that is the case in all sports in all era's) that the game does not have the personality that it had during the mid-'70s through 2010 or so despite Ovechkin and McDavid.
@@scsmith4604Agree. I barely watch NHL anymore.
Suter never would’ve drilled Gretz like that if it was an NHL game and Marty McSorley was out there.
We lost fair and square; still hurts, but in the long run it was good for the game...Congratulations USA
The Canadian team was too old in 96.
Could not express it better
@@theodorebelmont7922 Correct. Also injured. No Mario or Kariya
@@kulba21And still vastly more talent. No excuses.
@@theodorebelmont7922Not.
Michael Richter ladies and gentlemen, maybe the greatest goalie performance ever against maybe the mightiest Canadian team of all time, I say maybe because Patrick Roy was not on this team
Dominik Hasek
@@frantisekruzicka5449not in that tournament and definitely not at that time might have been the greatest three game set by a goalie ever ask the mighty Canadian people see what they say they're not going to say Hasek... And that's no disrespect to him he was better than Mike Richter career wise but for those three games I don't think any goalie matches that especially the team he was playing against
Richter made the difference......i was there at the molson.centre....still remember
yes yes yes RICHTER all the way ! RICHTER stopped the great over rated Canada team !
USA!! Love watching this. I remember exactly where I was at during this. How about the old school ads too. Classic all around!!
This was the greatest international tournament in history.
I am Canadian red indian...Growing up through the 90s i had much respect for Mike Richter but the favourite was always Dominik Hasek
Brett Hull scored two massive goals that were both controversial. This one, and the cup winner. Either way, he was a beast!!!
And born in Canada!
@@basilcarroll9729 And LEFT this communist dump!
@@That90sShow i feel for canada. More than ever us/Canada need to stick together and be friends. We deserve better than this. Sounds cheesy but its a big deal. Being forced what to do and what you cant do is something i never thought could happen and it is. Gross part is some people welcome it and see it as a good thing. It should make every person sick no matter what your stance is.
Brett hull was a beast in this tournament
@@basilcarroll9729 But his mother as well as her side of the family are American. He’s as much American as he is Canadian.
I was so, so hyped that finally the best of the best of the best would compete against each other in Bejing winter Olympics.
And then, no, it would not happen.
We need a world cup then ! What ever happened to the plans they had for it to be a regular thing after 2016?
@@thepreacher4810 On November 2, 2016 Chicago Cubs won the world series, coincidence ???
I think not.
World cup would be great but it would need that break from NHL anyway and knowing that the sport in itself is not in the interest of NHL cause there`s no money involved in it so it wont happen.
I feel your pain.
LOL at 38:10 I believe I see guitarist and Flyers fan Trey Anastasio from Phish celebrating a goal by team USA. Nice!
I never understood why the Canadian fans would boo Brett Hull when his 1st choice was to play for Team Canada. Naturally he is going to play for the United States since they gave him the opportunity
Amazing series that year. Watched every game I could
What a great Tournament despite being on the wrong side of the finals. Practically hockey at it's Pinnacle. USA's roster was almost toe to toe with Canada's.
No Lemieux, Bourque or Pronger
We moved to Canada that summer. What an introduction to hockey!
15:09 I think draining pints is Walt’s favorite pastime in retirement. What a beauty
Thank you so much is right!!! This just brought back best memories, best times EVER!!!!!!
If Canada lost to Sweden….. I wonder what the US mindset would have been
Ron Wilson mentioned how much they wanted to grab the wheel with Canada as the passenger , but we came within a goalpost of never happening
Great for hockey. Canadian hockey needed a shake up.
Without 1996 there might not have been a 2002.
I love that James Hetfield narrated this
It really sounds like him.
Oh, nevermind, it actually is him. Haha.
Hetfield has a career in doing voice over work.
The U.S. won the 1996 World Cup of Hockey on Canadian ice in Montreal but Canada got their revenge on American soil in 2002 when we won Olympic gold in Salt Lake City!
Imagine being Gary Suter and play on the 1980 and 1996 teams. Just incredible
Wrong Suter. Bob Suter was on the 1980 US Olympic Team. Gary didnt make his US debut until 1984.
lmao

Thanks for sharing, I recall this World cup, Man the American side was strong that year
Without Mario
Any other excuses?
Heart breaking loss for Canada 🇨🇦
Dont kill me, but in my mind this win has had more of a lasting significant impact on the development of hockey in the US than 1980
**Of course without 1980, how many of the guys on the 96 team wouldve been there?
100%.
1980 stands as the kick start for a lot of Americans to get to the NHL.
those '96 world cup USA tarps are iconic.
Richter was unreal he was the difference in this series
I went to the USA-Russia game in NY and the third game of the final in Montreal
Anyone who says “The game has never been better then it is today” needs to watch this. USA hockey has taken a major step backwards since 1996.
Theo gives great commentary.
When I see all the names on that Canadian team, I still can’t believe we won. Yeah that was special
This team changed hockey in America .these guys don’t get enough credit for what is now a dominant team in hockey
Kariya was hurt too right?
I was at that game!
15 rows back behind both benches!!
GO USA!!!!
I miss this era of hockey players. The game too. Not the same as it used to be.
That Canadian team might be the greatest team ever assembled! But we were pretty good too!!!
1987 Canada cup team was the best ever assembled I think
@@Hoovie9596 2005 World Junior team for Canada was an absolute wagon, too
@@tommclarty17 agreed. And a new pair of shorts 🩳 😂
My most fond hockey moment. Watching team USA beat Canada in the '96 World Cup.🏅 🇺🇲
Then you weak cvnts got smashed in the 2002 olympic games then in the 2004 world cup hahaaaa.
Team Canada was so deep that Brett Hall a Canadian-American played for the USA.
I am Canadian. It was unfortunate we lost but we learned from it. If we had Mario Lemieux it may have been different. But that is no excuse.
Bourque too, Cujo jumping on that 2nd goal pissed me off so much, such an odd playm and then Canada crumbled.
This is portrayed as David vs Goliath but come on, USA had a fantastic roster. On the Canadian side, Messier, Coffey and Gretzky were well past their prime and Cujo was an average goalie at that stage
Gary Suter and gretz are Buddie chery wine Bests !
It was MIKE RICHTER dammit, well freaking done.
Brett Hull. an entire career of blown calls.
3:52 - "Decades past dominance". That is truth with alterations, so to speak! Canada Cup (NHL international team All-Stars) on NHL rinks was Canada's home-turf and
4/5 won the gold medal. Only the Sovietunion managed to win once the gold medal (1981).
But in the Olympics and IIHF World Championship tournaments, Team Canada had not been in recent decades a major player. Just look at the results;
Canada had not won an Olympic gold medal since 1952 (not broken til 2002 = 50 YEARS) and not any medal since 1968 Olympics, where they won a Bronze medal.
In the Olympics it had been beside the 1980 OG with Team USA, all European dominance for the medals. Sovietunion, Czechoslovakia and Sweden won most.
In IIHF World Championship Tournaments, Canada had managed to make better results with the medals. They had won 2 years prior in 1994 the gold medal, but prior that
it had been 33 YEARS = 3 decades since they had managed to win the gold (1961).
I still think Roy would have made a difference.
nah. Marty was better.
@@dspf68 Did you even watch the tournament? Joseph was the starter, not Brodeur.
@@robins5798 wow totally forgot that!

USA had size, grit, depth and goaltending.
That was a great series, Richter stole that series
That Hull goal was a high stick, 100%. Unless he's only 5 feet tall.
No matter what, I'll always cheer for Sweden! Greets from Europe!
Amazing games , I remember richter was outstanding . Main reason why usa won .
Not a huge upset. Usa was stacked.
Can't keep losing forever, the laws of probability won't allow it, well done
“Knock the king off the crown”….you guys can keep Hull.
Title of this VIDEO should be called "ORCHESTRATING A LIE" LOL 😂😂😂
It took Mario Lemieux coming out of retirement to put Canada back on top.
Is that James Hetfield narrating this ? He did a great job
who directed this? i see the NHL network produced and showed it.
Canada was stacked. WoW.
