I wasn't sure if I wanted to go for the 53 or the 43, and most of the features removed do seem to be things I wouldn't need (viewfinder, manual controls), but the NightShot was what decided it for me since I plan to do some traveling and nighttime filming. I bought this cam because of your in depth video to shoot surfing at the Wave pool (shooting is from both sides of the pool). However I have huge regrets about this purchase. No matter how I positioned the screen I could hardly see the action on clear sunny days (that's usually when I shoot this cam) and therefore missed many angles. I really missed having a viewfinder. My mate has the Sony AX53 with the view finder and it was a joy to use. I could actually see the action! The big clanger in my opinion is the ergonomics. Where the strap fits on my operating hand doesn't allow for point of thumb on the video switch. It sits closer to thumb joint so when you go to operate you have to slide your thumb down which in turn slips your wrist knuckles below the safety strap. Because of this it slipped out of my hand and dropped on the concrete causing slight cosmetic damage. Miraculously it survived and still functions. Now this camera sits on a tripod and the zoom function is mostly useless due to the fact I can't see the action. Now I'm a 6'2" male with not overly huge hands at all. I'm also a pro photographer and recently switched to the Sony system. The camera would certainly suit someone with smaller hands (try before you buy!!!) The quality is very good but what's the point if you can't see what you are shooting clearly.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 lety +1

      Using flip out screens on sunny days is an issue with most cameras with this feature. I have a AX53 and the view finders helps a bit but has it's own drawbacks. I find that a hood like the one linked here is a good accessory. amzn.to/2QNeac7. Also, I find my finger prints on the touch screen leaves oils that really diffract the light. Use your lens cleaning cloth often to help with screen visibility or consider using a stylus. Last, since the screen articulates, hold the camera either higher or lower to keep the screen out of the sun. Since you are framing the shot on the screen, you have a bit of flexibility as to how you hold the camera. If you are setting up a tripod, try using a photographers shroud like you see with old time photographers. Some fairly thick dark cloth can provide a larger version of the screen linked above. Your visit to the wave pool sounds like it will produce a lot of nice video. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    @tollbar5468 Před 3 lety +2

    Very interesting. I was looking at the AX53 camcorder a while back as replacement for my current Sony Handycam but, this model seems to have both reliability and operational issues. I left it a while then returned to it with renewed interest in buying it. However, you say you bought your '43 to replace your '53 because it developed a fault - yet another faulty AX53. For a camcorder that's been around for quite sometime I find this disappointing. It's the only Sony 'corder that has come to my attention that has certain issues.
    I'm surprised that Sony have only recently released the '43 now (well, here in the UK anyway), and not at the same time as the '53. I sense the writing is on the wall for Sony camcorders as they don't seem to have a '53 replacement in the pipeline anytime soon - I hope I'm wrong.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 lety +2

      As with so many things, the right tripod depends on how you are using it. I got a fairly substantial tripod and a fluid head that I really like but because it's so heavy, it often gets left at home. It's similar to the Neewer 61 inch pro tripod on Amazon for about $120. I have several light weight travel tripods that seem to come along with me more often. A couple of these were part of camera bundles. The Amazon Basic lightweight tripod looks like it would work too. Just understand its light weight. Top brand tripods like those from Manfrotto are nice but I'm too cheap to pay that much.

      @@GadgetTalk4U Thanks GT it confirmed what I hoped to be the case. Sony Home Play is the same as "Play Memories Home" which is it's official name. I can let you know that it works very well for me for years to 1. cut off the beginning of a video, 2. cut off the end part, 3. cut a long video into any amount of parts, deleting some of 'stuff' in between in order to cut out unimportant parts that may be irrelevant. 4. You also can look at any of the vids, frame by frame, save a frame for instance that a photographer would have to wait and catch at just that very second while it maybe on your video, ready to cut out. etc. It even has a crude Photo manager in there, although I prefer ACDSee or Photoshop. But it's really a great tool to manage your vids.

      Keep in mind the screen rotates so you can use the screen and hold the camera to minimize sunlight on the screen. For example, when the sun is behind me, I'll hold the camera close to my chest with the screen facing up or even slightly forward to get it into the shade. You could also use a strong selfie stick to hold the camera up and point the screen with the shade down. You might have to get creative. I'm not familiar with the R800 but it looks smaller. • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 lety

      I believe the answer is yes. I don't livestream so here's what I did. In the camera's settings menu go to connections. You will find an item labeled HDMI Control. It has two choices - on and off. When off the HDMI output does not include the icons and camera control info on the flip out screen. I tested that using a field monitor connected via the HDMI cable. When On the field monitor showed the icons, when off it was just the image. I then recorded a short segment with the field monitor attached. The image on the field monitor included no icons. The recording when played back didn't either. So, I believe that when you connect the HDMI cable from the camera to a capture device on your computer you'll be able to stream via the computer. I watched a guy on CZcams use three of these cameras to stream a church service using a video switcher. I suspect he was using OBS on the computer to manage the stream. I hope you'll use the link in the video description to purchase the camera if you choose to go with this camera. Best Wishes.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 lety

      It depends on how close you want to get to the players and how far the camera will be from the players. In my 4K sample videos for this camera I have a shot at about the 2 minute mark that might simulate the distance and what you'd see. I stopped the zoom with more zoom available as to not get close enough to recognize faces. There was more available. There are two ways to connect a shotgun or mini shotgun to the camera. You can purchase the Sony brand mic and it will get power and record directly through the hot shoe mount on the camera. Or, you can do what I do and get a less expensive mini shotgun mic and mount it to the same on-camera shoe mount but plug a cable into the external mic socket on the right side of the camera. I have a couple of reviews for such mics on the channel.

      Check the battery charge and note if you're using 3rd party batteries. Also, see if the dual record is set to on. If so, turn it off. Last, try 1080p resolution to see if that makes a difference. Zooming always magnifies shake so that is probably just the impact of the zoomed out shake. Dual record is the default so that shouldn't make a difference. Also experiment with face tracking and other focus options. It might just be broken. Sony has a user forum where someone else might have a solution. Good luck.

      Donovan, since most of what I send to CZcams is 1080P I use the XAVC at 30 FPS on the handycam. I use 4K if I think I'll be zooming in during editing so I'll still have a 1920 by 1080 image after the zoom. Many like 60 FPS as it gives a crisper image. My first thought is to check your SD card. Frame drop can cause jerky video and that is most often caused by lost frames during the write process to the card. I use a class 10, U3 card which equates to a 30MB/s write speed. Class 10 U1 at 10 MB/s should handle 4K, though. Dropped frames can also happen when the computer you're playing the video on is working beyond it's capacity and it drops frames. There are some good articles online that discuss this and how to fix it. Cheers.

      Sony doesn't specify a max size. Some sellers recommend up to 256 gb. I tend to go smaller so if a card fails or Iose it, I've lost less video. The mount is a standard 1/4 -20.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 měsíci

      There are several handycam style cameras that should work nicely for you. It will depend on how much you know about camera settings and how often you think your stories will require custom settings. The Sony AX43 is nice but settings can be a bit clunky to change. The AX 53, as I recall, has easier access to some settings with a little knob on the bottom front. Canon also has some cameras in this category.
      If you're planning a lot of bright sunshine, outdoor shooting, a camera with a view finder might be helpful. I didn't find the view finder that helpful for what I use the camera for. The AX43 does everything I need.
      A current smartphone might also be a good place to start. There are some nice camera apps for smartphones that allow you to easily manipulate camera settings and the video is very good. Maybe get your feet wet that way? You could add a small video light, mini shotgun mic and a handle pretty cheap and the light and shotgun mic will likely work with a follow on dedicated camera so you're not wasting your cash.
      Good luck and have fun!

      Lots of variables. Have you tried recording some short clips in each available recording settings, running them through your editor and seeing what you like best? Since I go to CZcams I don't record to 4K very often. Speaking of that, do you use an SD card with the proper read and write speed for 4K and HD recording? Good luck.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 2 lety +1

      Not sure I can give you a meaningful answer. There are so many variables that affect battery life. Resolution, recording or standby, zoom use and battery size all have an impact. When traveling for example, I record things of interest and then turn off the camera until finding something else to record. The camera still has power at the end of the day. Long recording session clearly wouldn't last that long. I'd estimate about 2 hours of fairly continuous recording with a fully charged battery. Hopes this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not a service expert by any means. However, since both issues trace back to the battery. I'd start there. A low battery would cause both issues and sometimes the things just fail. They have two cells within the battery case and perhaps one is low or failed resulting in the camera sensing low voltage. Your battery has three contacts. I believe they are one ground and two positives (one for each cell. If you have a multimeter you should get about 4.2 volts from each cell when the battery is fully charged. Checking voltage under load would be hard without some extra equipment. Easiest to just order a new battery or see if the vendor will send you one gratis.

    • @GadgetTalk4U
      @GadgetTalk4U  Před 2 lety +1

      There are a number of differences between the two as I reviewed the specs on the Sony web page. I don't own the AX700. The big difference and price driver is the electronic view finder. The AX700 has the optical "steady shot" system for stabilization and the AX 53 and 43 have the BOSS optical system which is generally viewed to be superior. As with so many things, what's important to YOU is what's most important to your decision. Both are solid cameras. How you plan to use them should help you decide. Cheers.

      The battery is charged via the camera and a 120V power brick with Sony connector. No USB. You can connect an HDMI cable and get either a clean or dirty signal via the menu. If you turn off the Demo setting, you can run the camera indefinitely. I use an HDMI dongle to get the signal into my computer and use OBS. One, use external power. When I use my camera to record and have it in standby between shots, the standby come much later or not at all. Two, use the hdmi out to your streaming device and record the session. The camera will run until the memory fills up. I feed a field monitor that way. 4K doesn't output, but 1080p works well. Lisa, sorry for the delay. I've been out of town. For your first question, most dedicated handy cam type cameras will not record in segments. This one will record until the card is full. Next, I think Movie Maker will work. Depending on the resolution you choose you'll output MP4 files or M2TS files. I believe Movie Maker will accept both. There are several very nice free movie editors out there. Search "Best free movie editors" and you'll see lots of reviews and suggestions. Many have CZcams tutorials. Your only issue will be whether they work with Windows 8 or not. Cheers.

    Where on Earth are 4K60 camcorders at the £500-600 mark?! I've been waiting for a 4K60 camcorder in the $500-1000 price range for about 6 years now. But every year all anyone seems to do is rebrand their 4K30 again.
    The Sony AX-53 came out very late 2015 / early 2016, are Sony really saying they have no better sensor and processor to make a new camcorder? So instead they just take something off the AX53 and then charge the same price as what you can already pick up the AX53 for anyway. Why is 4K60 taking so long to come out arrive to the price point? Phones and GoPros have been doing 4K60 for years and even moved onto 4K120 and 8K30. When are we going to see Panasonic or Sony bring this to ~£600 price point, like a HC-VX2 or AX63??? They wouldn't need to spend that much money either, keep the lens and OIS and body and everything else the same but just update the sensor and processors to give us 4K60 on H.265.
    For my use case which is filming low league football, handheld, pitch side you do seem to need a proper dedicated camcorder because the image stabilisation is much better on these plus the electric zooming and super fast focusing. I just wish they brought out 60fps version as I need to slow down clips at times, a 4K60 AX43 or HC-VX1 would be perfect.
