  • The "Four in hand" is the most well known and commonly worn knot in the western world.
    The "Four-in-hand" knot has its name from the drivers of the four-in-hand carriage in the mid-1800's, who tied their scarves and the reigns of their carriage with this knot.
    It is a small knot with a distinctive elongated, asymmetric shape.
    The video is to be viewed as if you were looking in a mirror.

    I thought i would let you know, I've been using your videos for years to learn all the knots. Every now and then, i still come back here when i forget how to tie a larger knot like the Half-Windsor.
    I am still just 18, and i never had a dad or brother to help me learn how to tie one, but i didn't need it thanks to you!

      @@poshamcfarlane4655 Legitimately yeah. In the 11 years I went to college, grad school, and just recently got my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I used these knots for ties when I interviewed for grad school, when I interviewed for residencies, all that stuff. This video is the best and will serve you well professionally bros.

    I wish I could hold that much thin end, it would make it a lot easier to tie. I'm about 6'2 and don't want to be stuck with a limited selection of extra long ties, so the four in hand knot is very useful. The only catch is that the thin end isn't long enough to go through the label loop on the wide end that keeps it in check. To keep the tie in place without a tie bar, I've tried using neodymium button magnets. One behind the shirt, one in the loop on the back of the wide end.

    This and the "Victoria" are asymmetrical knots. The others are symmetrical (a perfect triangle).
    The "Windsor" is considered by many as the nicest knot due to it's large size. Some are smaller and some have enlongated ends. Try them and then determine wich ones go best with your particular tie. Good luck!!
    :-)

  • @avvi66
    @avvi66  Před 16 lety

    You have a point. I personally like large tight knots. But small knots as this one should maybe not be tightened so hard. It is actually a matter of taste. A tie can be conceived to be too loose or too tight. I'm not saying that my ties are perfect, or that I have good or bad taste. I'm just showing the correct way to TIE the tie. Pulling and yanking are prone to individual taste. Anyways, your view is duly noted and appreciated.

  • @avvi66
    @avvi66  Před 16 lety

    Yes, absolutly. It's probably the most used tie knot there is. If you want to stand out from the crowd though, I would go for a nice big fat Windsor.

  • @Aulaein
    @Aulaein Před 15 lety

    Im not sure how expensive that is for you, but we have some pretty expensive shirts over here. The top quality ones can go anwere from $80 - $150. The ones I buy are like $10 - $15. That is true though, at least I have some. I dont really need to dress up anyway, I just do it every once in awhile because I like the style. I have two fitted shirts though. White and light blue barrel cuff just tend to get boring after awhile.

  • @MobiusCoin
    @MobiusCoin Před 16 lety

    Well, I think there are certain times the Four in hand knot works. I mean, if you don't want to do the full Windsor every day for work, than this is a nice small and quick knot. I mean sure, this probably won't cut it if you are presentation on stage or trying to impress a prospective employer, but its good for casual use. But I agree, I like the Pratt and the Windsor, but the Grantchester is probably my favourite.

    The Christensen(Cross) knot. The combination of finding the right tie for that knot, and getting it to look nice after the double noose in the end is difficult to say the least.

  • @avvi66
    @avvi66  Před 16 lety

    Yes, the tie materials do matter. Mostly because of the different range of thickness between materials. You point out a very interesting phenomenen here though; different weaves of the same material give different results. This happens most often with knots made up of many moves. The more the twisting and turning of the material, the more you are at the mercy of undesirable effects. I only have one advice here; trial and error. At the end one knows exactly which ties go best with which knots.

    I love all your vids .. wish there was a voice to this... Great work

  • @avvi66
    @avvi66  Před 16 lety

    1: This is an asymmetrical knot. You can't make it symmetrical. Try the Windsor or Half Windsor to get a symmetrical knot
    2:You adjust the width at the bottom of the knot like this: You know where the tie goes out of the knot (and around your neck)? Take a grip on that part -on each side of the knot- and pull away from each other. You will then see that the bottom part of the knot will tighten.
    Some like it loose, others like it tight. It's all about taste.

  • @avvi66
    @avvi66  Před 15 lety

    Quite rudely stated, but yes, I am not paying attention to the dimple. It's hard enough for some people to learn these knots, than for me to nag on dimple issues. In your world there are obviously only to types of ties; great or sloppy. This one is what most people wear: something in between.

  • @galt57
    @galt57 Před 15 lety

    This is the method I always have used and it always makes a crooked knot. I'm switching to the Windsor from now on.

  • @pdog305301
    @pdog305301 Před 15 lety

    Slight pulling gives the asymmetric shape of the knot. If you don't pull a little bit it will come out too symmetrical. I guess it all a matter of personal taste, but personally a four in hand should never look or be symmetrical.

    I use a windsor knot every day. However, i have some ties made from different materials, mostly silk, but different weaves of silk. SOme tie a windsor beautifully, others don't leave it looking good at all. Can you explain why this is? Are some tie materials more/less suited to certain knots?
    Thanks

    is it just where i'm from, or is this knot also commonly called the schoolboy's knot? that's what i learnt it as. i think that name comes from the fact that schoolboys often use it because it's one of the easiest.

    that's sad dude...I am 21 and I know about 14 different ways to tie a tie. This is my least favorite knot because of it's asymmetry, small size, and weird shape. You should try the pratt knot or the windsor. theyre still very easy.

    Does anyone know where I can find a fitted french cuff shirt (the one with the cufflinks)? I dont like wearing baggy shirts and prefer more form fitting shirts, but my problem is that im a small guy. I have to shop for boys 16's, so my choices are pretty limited. I get mine at Burlington Coat Factory, and they never really do have much of a selection.

    Terrible finish on this video. He doesnt pay attention to the dimple , which is the difference between a great tie and a sloppy tie. You must pinch the dimple in the center and hold it as you tighten the tie so it stays centered.
