A Mid-Engine Hatchback is Born - The Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 - ISSIMI Drives

  • In this episode of ISSIMI Drives, Derek Tam "Hyphen" Scott tries out a 205 Turbo 16 in Italy, offering his perspective on how the car compares to a variety of other cars ranging from a 205 GTI to a Porsche 911 to a Lamborghini Countach. 4 wheel-drive and immensely turbocharged, the Turbo 16 is maximum 80s, and having never been sold in the United States, it’s also a thoroughly forbidden fruit.

    About ISSIMI
The niche, $30b industry of collectable and low-production cars has seen little innovation in the past several decades. It’s one that lacked transparency, dependent on traditional dealers, brokers, and auction houses with unnecessarily high fees.
We’re setting out to change that.
We believe our technological and operational excellence can decrease costs while increasing transparency into car quality, building trust between collectors. Give us a shot, and shop rare cars anywhere in the world from the comfort of your own home.

This brings back so many memories. I bought a brand new 1.6 205 GTI back in 1986, and in the showroom in chiswick London was a Turbo 16....and what a sight it was!!!! Loved the 205 GTI as the handling was on another level...Probably the most fun car I have ever owned and I have owned a lot! Thanks for the memories...

I’ve waited years for anyone on CZcams to do a drive video of a T16 and then JT-S “nocks it out of the park” with wonderfully worded & beautifully shot peace and even relatively quickly driven considering it age/exorbitant value. Now I’m waiting on “tender hooks” for the other content from your European excursion, ISSIMI just keeps on upping the game when it comes to cool & unique car content.

205 GTI and Turbo 16 are probably the best looking small cars in the history. That body design was just perfect and dynamic. First generation VW Golf GTI was pretty close though. Somehow Peugeot never captured the same magic with 205's successors. Sure, Lancia Delta Integrale was a legend and now it's an icon but if you look at the styling it wasn't nearly good looking as the 205.

If i owned this car i would HAVE to turn that boost up at least somewhat. Crank it to 300-350bhp? Otherwise it is being held back so much from its true potential (like well under 50%!) In reality due to the extra weight of the AWD system it isn't a huge difference in performance compared to the standard/normal 1.9ltr 205GTI that it should be. Obviously if that boost was turned up just slightly that would be an entirely different matter!
