Tirpitz v Tallboys

- Wing Commander Tait’s briefing before the raid was short. The objective was the same as before, target and sink the Tirpitz.
Operation Catechism was an RAF air raid with specially adapted Lancaster bombers of the RAF’s elite 617 and 9 Squadrons attacked Tirpitz in a remote fjord in Norway, it resulted in the final destruction of the fearsome German battleship Tirpitz.
Tallboys released, from 14,000 feet accelerated to 750 mph approaching the speed of sound. Minutes later the Tirpitz - pride of the Kriegsmarine was no longer.

Imagine spending the war hiding in a bay
- This post was made by the USS Enterprise gang
the nooby tirpitz
@@wut1727 nooby? This "hiding in the bay" laid the foundation for the fleet in being concept, in a way of efficiency the british home fleet couldn't even begin to dream of. The amount of ressources spent on having to protect every single convoy in the vast operational area of Tirpitz simply because she COULD leave port and engage - on top of the ludicrous amounts of man and material spent and lost in trying to sink her in the well protected Fjord massively outmatch even the Bismarcks achievements.
In a way, the Tirpitz was one of the few german ships that actually made up for her construction costs. Don't judge hastily simply because your only definition of military success is going into the fight frontally with all guns blazing.

@@ArxInvicta Sorry to burst your bubble, but the fleet in being concept was invented and coined by Arthur Herbert of the Royal Navy in 1690 when fighting against the French. I love stories like this.
The Germans treated the Norwegians comparatively well, better than the French. Also, these particular men of the Kriegmarine didn't do anything wrong, and that they repaid her kindness with their own shows their hearts.
A norwegian, aren't ya then?
I have never heard Germans act like this
@Harupert Beagleton they were just soldiers doing what their leaders told them. In a war I shall regret killing the soldiers unless they are terrorists.
I can see from my home where the Tirpitz capsized, around 5-6km away. Outside of Tromsø, Norway
Is there a memorial of any kind there?
@@Eyes0penNoFear I think not. The Nazis were defeated and not may memorials were made.

Soon after a frantic rescue mission to free any sailors trapped in air pockets, Shortly after Tirpitz capsized, parties of sailors climbed onto the hull and painted marks on locations where they heard signs of life. But metal cutting torches were not avaliable so the rescue was delayed. But in the end 87 sailors were rescued from the wreck.
87 is still alot, reminds me of the USS Arizona, although they werent as lucky
The torches would have been of little use. We learned that at Pearl Harbor. The torches consumed the oxygen in the enclosed spaces before the holes could be opened.

Group Captain James Brian "Willie" Tait, DSO & Three Bars, DFC & Bar (9 December 1916 - 31 August 2007) was an officer in the Royal Air Force during and after the Second World War. He conducted 101 bombing missions during the war, including the one that finally sank the German battleship Tirpitz in 1944. He succeeded Leonard Cheshire as commander of the famous 617 Squadron and with six gallantry decorations to his name, remains one of the most distinguished airmen in the history of the nations of the British Commonwealth.
I don't care what people say..the RAF,and it's allies needed to something in 1940, onwards as much as I don't think Dresden should have been bombed...they took the fight to the enemy on all fronts.im proud of them especially the RAAF
He probably should have been awarded a Victoria Cross but politics got in the way. Command were worried that awarding a VC might send a signal that the commander of 617 automatically received this award since both previous commanders, Guy Gibson and Leonard Cheshire had been awarded the VC.
To be honest 617 squadron seemed to have way more than its fair share of legendary pilots and aircrew. I also remember that Tait took a demotion from Group Captain to Wing Commander so that he could take command of 617 squadron.
@@bradster1708 I have a copy of the original letter from Air Vice Marshal Cochrane recommending the award of a VC to Tait but it was not to be. He did indeed drop a rank in order to remain flying a plane rather than a desk but I'm almost sure he was promoted to Group Captain after the war not during. He was my father in law and Cheshire, a great friend of Tait was my wife's Godfather.
@@mikeprzyrembel6308 thanks for sharing that. I can only imagine how that would be to know such great men, must be humbling. I hope you have children to pass on the legacy. Cheers mate.
Wow, this one rally hit home, my Great Uncle was a flight engineer in a Lancaster bomber and was stationed at Lossiemouth, we don’t know much about his service as he wouldn’t talk much about it (according to my mum) but we have photos over Berlin on a night raid and you can see the fire even though it’s in black and white. He served between 1944 until the end of the war. Anyway I’m pretty sure he took part in this attack and I’m very glad you made a video of it!

I don’t know why anyone would dislike these videos they’re honestly amazing
I didn't dislike it, but this one is somewhat meh in information presented. For example it is mentioned that previous bomb hits before relocation to Tromso hit rudder and caused minor flooding, when in fact bow was hit and the explosion deformed it in such a way that Tirpitz could not sail faster than 7-8 knots. This is why it was relocated to Tromso as a shore battery. Video mentions crew reduction but never says why (most of the crew involved in sailing was transferred elsewhere as they were no longer needed on a shore battery).
There was also no smokescreen, and the fighters scrambled in time, but due to some communications problems, they flew somewhere else. There were even court martials for it.
Most of the info is just Bull$hit full of errors !!!
I'm impressed. You're able to pronounce Tirpitz correctly
I love how this video came out just when I finished my Model of the Tirpitz
The animators are too powerful, soon they will take over earth.
Yeah well, I’m here for it!
Do u watch PWA?
Living near an airport with a Lancaster that still flies I sometimes get to hear how loud even one by itself can be. Hearing multiple approaching and knowing they're bringing bombs to drop on you would be a harrowing experience

Yarnhub animations are made to be quick, informative and eye catching, they aren't able to make the animations run slower while maintaining the 3 things they focus on.
@@mynose4540 they don't need to extend it. From the moment the bomb explodes in the animation to the 3 second absurd 180 degree turn there are one and a half minutes of the ship standing in the same angle. From the listing it's like ~45 seconds, taking advantage of those could be enough even.
