Mini Subs vs Tirpitz

- Conceived in part by Winston Churchill, Operation Source was a daring plan to take out several German ships including the infamous Tirpitz that were positioned in Fjords in Norway. Mini submarines or X-Craft were used to deposit charges nearby the hull. This incredibly brave tactic was a David vs Goliath battle was one that put the Tirpitz out of action for 6 months but it also came at great cost to the men involved in the mission.

Yes sir yarnhub
My grandmother did witness this event. She was helping a family friend (who lived in the fjord, Kåfjorden) with picking up potatoes when she heard a lot of commotion from the Tirpitz. She remembered that she saw some of the british sub-crew on the water while the germans was on deck throwing grenades at them. And later when the bomb exploded, it almost looked like the whole Tirpitz jumped off the water by the impact.
Wow really
Could be fake but imma say sounds trye
@@APersonOnCZcamsX One thing I can say about my grandmother is that she was never a person who exaggerated. She stayed in that fjord because she had tuberculosis and the only place in northern part of Norway where they had a treatment for it was in the town of Talvik, some couple of kilometers from where the Tirpitz laid.
@@karlzen86 i think Yarnhub should make a video of your grandmother picking potatoes with the tirpitz in the background flying out of the water, i mean for that part of norway it was just a typical day really, slight differance in ordnance delivery and scale but weren't there frequent raids and no doubt many, many explosions over several years?

Fun fact : There's a mission in the game Hidden & Dangerous 2 based on this, it's a great game
Was totally reminded of that mission!
A point that should be made: The captured British sailors being held on Tirpitz KNEW there were several large explosive charges beneath the ship which would hopefully sink the vessel. Even though they were sitting on the target, and had no reason to believe they would survive the expected sinking, they said nothing. They simply waited for the blast. That, my friends, is both courage and dedication!
Actually no you are wrong. What you are actually explaining is when a destroyer filled with explosives rammed a french port that could repair Tirpitz, they also set out some british commandos and a lot of the prisoners were taken back on the DD and we're killed from the explosion. The bombs places under Tirpitz would not have killed those men... You people are honestly so stupid.. a blast from the sea floor? Yeah you are a God damn idiot for even saying that they thought they were dead, honestly it never would've sank the damn ship dude
@@duckygaming3536 Last time I checked, it was two commandoes who went up with the Campbelltown. And there were casualties on board of the Tirpits. The explosion send the guys at the anchor up in the air, and one cracked his skull on the anchor chain when comming down. This was AFTER the captain had moved his ship aside as far as the chains allowed. Had all three x-craft been able to place their charges, and had the Tirpitz not moved aside a bit, the explosion could have well sunk her in minutes.
And even when you don't die, having a ship jump up 3 feet while standing on the deck might well reduce your legs to bone-splinter filled sacks...
@@duckygaming3536 A blast from the sea floor is actually the most effective way to destroy ships. It's the same principle behind depth charges and torpedo warheads: using the less compressive properties of water to crack the keel and hull of ships by magnifying the explosive force...
The story is not exactly seen here. I read it and the british guys says about the explosive carges under the ship.
The captain moved the ship a bit but the carges crippeled the ship that she couldn't sail on the ocean anymore.
Without this channel, we would have most likely never known of these brave heroes. This channel is doing an honorable job. I salute you.
There is an amazing book by Patrick Bishop which includes all the actions against the Tirpitz. Churchill was obsessed.

@@duckygaming3536 lmaoooo like what???
The damage inflicted by the X-Crafts wasn't entirely appreciated by the Allies until after the war. The ship was seriously impaired due to damage to a propeller, which necessitated her moving in a drydock (which in the end resulted in her being Tallboy'd out of existence), and turret Dora jumped its bearings due to the blast. It was definitely a stepping stone in ensuring her eventual sinking.
Even if she hadn't been damaged, there was nothing Tirpitz could do.
The moment she tries to move, the British are going to hunt her down. Imagine if she was sent to attack the ships at D-Day? Tirpitz wouldn't last a minute against them. All she could really do was sit in the fjord and be, basically, a useless Fleet in Being.
@@youraveragescotsman7119 The Tirpitz is basically a mountain that rusts after 1942...
@@youraveragescotsman7119 I generally agree on that, but she was not totally useless. PQ-17 is the perfect example, that's why the British were going after her so badly, that is why she was sent there by the Germans; her mere presence is Norway is a potential threat to Allied shipping lanes. But yes, in the end the Kriegsmarine had very few surviving units against the RN and RAF, in a losing war of attrition.
@@youraveragescotsman7119a fleet in being is inherently not useless. The concept of a fleet in being is that it actively curtails and limits enemy movement and actions in it's general area because... Well, it's there. You gotta plan for it to show up no matter what.

Small Correction:
The KMS Lutzow was a heavy cruiser built under the Admiral Hipper-class. She saw combat with the Soviet Navy as the Tallinn.
The KMS Deutschland was the lead ship of her class, but under the worry of the ship named after the nation itself, Hitler ordered her renaming to "Lutzow".
It's either one of these two options, neither were battlecruisers...
You know there's irony here for the Prefix KMS was never used just like HIJMS/ IJN for they're post war terms used by historians for ships of both world wars.
But everything you've said is correct of ship classes.
@@lordwintertown8284 That's a prefix I saw people use, so I just use it.
I think it means "KriegsMarine Ship", though shouldn't it just be KS because "Kriegsmarine"...?
@@stevemc01 All G than mate, As many follow this trend & still you pointed out the proper classes of cruisers.
Anywho Yes I know wiki shouldn't be trusted 100% but they've got a good list of Current & historical ship prefixes inculding ones never used, While there's a few other sites that list similar information on prefixes.

Funny how the Bismarck and Tirpitz got sunk/heavily damaged by the smallest things possible. The Bismarck got sunk by unexperienced swordfish pilots, meanwhile the Tirpitz got heavily damaged by Mini Subs.
Swordfish torpedoes only jammed the rudder. Not to take away from their glory, but the actual sinking was done mostly by Dorsetshire and her torpedoes, after Rodney and KGV had mauled the superstructure. But will admit: the tiny bugs did give her the death sentence.
I believe Swordfish plane were WW1 planes
