Taylor and her sisters are at the orangutan exhibit at the Louisville Zoo in Louisville, Kentucky. One of the orangutans, named Amber, keeps pointing at Taylor's bag while she tries to figure out what the orangutan wants. She holds her purse closer to the window and unzips it and starts taking some of the items out. The orangutan peers inside the bag while continuing to point. Finally, Taylor pulls out a bag of fruit snacks and the orangutan looks satisfied. The orangutan points at the gummy and points at the chain link fence to communicate to Taylor to pass the snack through the fence.

They are captive and probably bored out of their minds.
This is equal parts amazing and horrifying....Amazing that they have such a strong method of communication, but horrifying at the known but ignored realization that they shouldn't be in a damn cage.
Where you see a cage at??...that orangutan is at a sanctuary and they're also an endangered species
@@TheGhostManN One can clearly see mesh fencing on two sides, so can assume with viewing glass on the third side that there is a fourth petition for the purpose of restraining these apes so paid visitors get what they pay for.
@Ghost if you can't see that he's in a cage then there's really nothing for me and you to debate. I'd be talking to a brick wall. He is not on open land. He is in what we call enclosures. It's....enclosed.... If it were an open sanctuary with acres of land for them to roam, they'd be in a vehicle trying to feed him or a closed off cage themselves... But as you can see, he's coming to a window.
@ML Roberts maybe. I'd think they'd like to live in something that resembles their natural habitat though. With space.
I don't know if you know this or not, but we're all in cages. You don't see most of us humans living free and in the wild. We have jobs, bills, and responsibilities.
He's definitely smarter than the human he knew exactly what instructions he was given the human and human could not follow his instructions

This is one of the most impressive great ape videos I've seen.
If you didn't know that he was an orangutan, you would think he was a human. His nonverbal communication is literally as good or better than the average person.
That's pretty true of all the great apes. There is a great deal of cross over between our gestures and theirs. Like the classic "hold out your hand to ask for something" gesture. I've seen it in chimps and orangutans both, and even in some monkeys.
But chimpanzees especially have a very complex pseudo-language of gestures. It's pretty cool to watch. They also, incidentally, make little spears and kill bush babies with them (not all; tool use among chimps is passed down via demonstration and imitation, so local populations have their own tool making and using techniques).

Similar to the orangutan that was beat to death in the smokey the bandit movies.

I truly feel sorry for their freedom being taken away. 😢
Not all animals are caged for our “amusement” some are so bcuz they’re either hunted in the wild or their natural habitats are being destroyed. Some of these places act as sanctuaries for these creatures who otherwise, sadly, would be endangered
@King of Everything not all are, but the majority absolutely are caged just for our amusement. And I will always despise any non-conservation, for profit zoos, which is what the vast majority of zoos are. Animals don't deserve to be caged and gawked at for no reason. In the case of conservation there is a genuinely good reason they are captive, but don't act like that is the majority of zoos, or even the situation for most zoo animals. @@DilbertWhitehead I agree. I think it's time to re-evaluate the "zoos are prisons and jails for animals" thinking. Yes, many zoos are inadequate and terrible conditions for the poor animals.
