- First written in 1973, Keith Fulsher's contribution to the sport, his Tying and Fishing the Thunder Creek Flies is still an outstanding book on this unique and productive style of tying baitfish patterns.

Congrats to David Durler for winning the book. Email me your contact info and I'll get the book in the mail to you!
THUNDER!! Matt, I'd love to have this book. Great fly! Here's a pro tip....tie them on a 90 degree jig hook, hide a few lead wraps in the head so the hook will orient correctly and BOOM you've got the best indicator fly for catching crappie ever created. Also this version is awesome for taking young kids bobber fishing
That sounds pretty cool Shane! Thanks for the tip. :-)
Have to try that
I love how you just dont tie fly patterns but you thoroughly do your research and find out the actual history of the fly as well. Brilliant
Thunder creek flies- been on my wish list. Thanks for offering these drawings.
Thunder! Would be a good addition to the library. Thanks Matt
THUNDER. Matt,Thunder Creek is an hour and a half from my house. I have to put my name in the hat for this one. Thank you for sharing this one buddy.

Thanks Matt, I have not heard about the THUNDER Creek style. I like your site because you find interesting examples of fly tying and the history of the fly. Thank you for that.
I know most of the history of the thunder creek flies.Have tied a lot of them.Tied them in a lot of colors, including the three little trout colors, black nose dace, shiners, darters just to name a few.The book would not help me much, but Cloie would love the book,so I'm trying to win it for her.Thunder Creek Style Flies sounds like a great book.I would like to browse through it.Don't win, will have to buy it for her.Have a great week Matt and everyone and tight lines and happy tying.
Love the way you illustrate the background of tying in all your videos. We know there's a lot more involved behind the scenes. On our end, we experience top quality / commercial grade experiences streaming from a green wall and a red brick room. Great job Matt! Ha e a great week!
What a great comment to read Casey. I do appreciate it. But honestly, I do this because it's fun for me. And getting to interact with all you in these comments makes it even more fun. :-)
I'm always looking to expand my knowledge of Flys so the Thunder Creek would be a great addition.

I have tied a few of these in the past, but now I could have a book that would show how to really tie the Thunder Creek pattern!

Thanks Matt. Really appreciate your book reviews! Thunder
the thunder creek style is an awesome fly, it's so easy to tie and you can use so many different materials.
it always reminds me of a clouser minnow unweighted but cleaner👍👍👍
another book im going to have to add, Damm you Matt, you are making me buy new furniture to hold all these... lol
Hahaha! If you're not careful Thomas you're going to end up like me. Always going down the "buying books I don't need or even have room for" hole. :-)
So Matt I just wanted to say I do really enjoy your videos. I feel like you have one of the best channels out there the look and presentation are spot on so thank you.
We’ll thank you Eric! I appreciate the kind words my friend. 👍
I haven’t tried a ThunderCreek fly on the water yet, but It definitely looks like a great one to t try out. Thank you Matt , everyone have a great week be safe.
Hello sir. Been tying these lately in various colors and sizes. These Thunder Creek streamers are just as much fun to fish as they are to tie. This would be a great book to add anyone's collection. Thank you for this one and have a great week and stay safe my friend.
Thank you Karl! I have confess I've only tied a couple and have never even fished them. I'm going to have to change that soon. :-)
Waitin' on me Thunder... Woke last night to the sound of Thunder.. Hi Matt Great review
And that's a great song Greg! "I woke last night to the sound of thunder... how far off I sat and wondered."
Thanks for a other great video. The book thunder creek flies would be a great addition to the tying library
I must say, I am buying fly tying books ever since I started watching your reviews. I will give this draw a shot Thunder
Ha! I hope I haven't led you astray too many times William. :-)
I love the thunder over in Scotland this book sounds great my friend
It is Jamie! Good luck my friend. :-)
Matt another great book review. Thanks for the chance, Thunder.
We’re in an exceptionally extreme drought here..been a Long time since I’ve heard Thunder. Thanks a lot for the chance at winning a good one. (of course if I don’t win, I’ll probably order it 🫤🙂) Have a great week Matt! 👍🎣
I know you Charlie! You're just like me when it comes to books. :-)
Thanks again for the book review with mine added to my collection thanks again thunder
Nice. TRUE STORY - I recently went to a dedicated fly shop to get a book on fly tying. When I asked what good books did they have. The response was “Don’t get a book just watch CZcams.” I go to CZcams and the video is about what good fly tying book to get. 🤔 LOL. I like the book recommendations. Thanks for sharing.
Hahaha! That's funny Bill. They're not wrong though. You can pretty much learn any technique you want from watching CZcams. Except what you don't learn... the history of the patterns and tiers. That's why I love books. And why I always try to share that in my videos. Thanks for the note my friend. :-)
Great review Matt. Thanks. I love fishing streamers and these Thunder flies would be right up my alley. Thanks for the opportunity.
You bet Richard! Appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Thunder Creek looks to be a promising style.
Great review of the Thunder Creek flies book. Looks like a good addition for any fly tiers library.
Matt, great review. I would love to add this book to my library. Thank you for the chance to win a Thunder creek style book.
Hello Matt! Nice review on the thunder streamers, a nice addition to any flyfishermans library. Thanks for sharing. 😀
thunder. Thank you on your knowledge on different way to fly tying method.
Ah good. Another book for the shelf. Unlike most tomes, I actually read the Stackpole books. What a great name for a stretch of water; Thunder Creek. What fish wouldn't be proud to call it home. Thanks Matt, well done.
Isn't that the truth Don? I love rivers with great names. That's when I first read about the Savage River I said I've got to make a trip out there. And less than a year after that first fishing trip out there, we bought our farm out that way. My next trip is to the Beaverkill up in NY. Another cool sounding one. :-)
Sounds like a great streamer. Thanks for the review. Thunder!
Hi Matt, The Thunder Creek style flies work well over here especially in the salt water, bright pink & white and chartreuse & white are great colours for Pollock.
That's awesome to hear Graham! To think, a fly some guy came up with on some tiny stream here in Wisconsin (a middle America state not many of us ever get to), and it's known the world over. Cool stuff. :-)
Nice review on the thunder creek style. Thanks for sharing and all the time you spend doing so thanks Matt.
You bet Butch! Good luck my friend. :-)
Hi Matt! I would love a thunder creek flies book! Thank you for the review!!
Thanks for the review Matt always enjoy , Thunder .
Thanks, Matt! Looks like a great book. I definitely need to tie and try the Thunder Creek.
All good patterns & interesting to tie. Good choice, Matt.
Thanks Bob! I haven't mentioned yet but next week I'm sneaking off to a campground on the Beaverkill. NY State Parks runs a small campground at the confluence of the Beaverkill and Willowemoc. Apparently there is a famous covered bridge and pool there. Plus I'll get to visit the Catskills museum. I'm hoping for an amazing trip. Now back to the bench if I want to get a video out in the morning. :-)
That would be a nice addition to my reads Matt, thanks for the review!!! Thunder
I may be a little late for this one but thunder, I think this would be a nice addition to the small library of five time books that I have started simply because of history and story. Plus I kind of like win one of those hats with nothing else maybe that can be a consolation prize. Again Matt thank you for all you do I've been pretty busy lately with work and haven't been in and such anticipation as I usually am with a release of your videos because I have so much to do that they come a little bit later. I just want to thank you for all you do, commend you for continuing to keep the art of fly tying alive interesting and something that we can use your knowledge and your videos to share with our younger generation which I do. Thank you dear friend, again thunder, and deep regards from your friend from Kentucky Luke
Well thank you for such a kind comment Luke. I really appreciate your support. I got your order packed up and ready to go out tomorrow, and I added an extra package as well. It's a book I think you'll enjoy. If it's one you already have, just donate it to a young tier who could use it. Have a great weekend my friend. :-)
Gee....Sounds like Keith's Thunder Creek book is a lot like your videos: Not just the "how to" but a bunch of background and history along with an overview of the techniques that make it successful! Looks like a great addition to my small but growing library. Thanks for all you do Matt, have a great week!
You bet Garrett! I always appreciate the kind words my friend. And certainly appreciate you watching my stuff. :-)
Sure enjoy your book reviews. Thanks for sharing such great information. Thunder Creek flies look great.
Thunder creek great classic! Love fishing buck tail! Thanks for the review Matt 👍
You're welcome David! I appreciate the note and good luck my friend!
David- I just did the drawing and congratulations! This comment came up. Send me an email with your mailing address and I'll get the book in the mail to you. matt@savageflies.com
Hi David. Please send me an email with where you want me to mail the book and I'll send it. Thanks!
Cool book Matt, Thunder!!!!!!!!
Anyone that Lew Oatman considers worthy of mentoring gets my respect. Anyone who Joseph Bates considers worthy of tying flies for his plates (including missing Oatman patterns) gets my attention. Throw inventing the Thunder Creek style on top of that, you have someone that I’m putting in my “worthy of an exclusive box” list.
Wow Craig, two legends you just brought up there! I didn't realize that Fulsher was from that generation until I read in this book that he was 83 years old in 2006. So yeah, he certainly overlapped with some of these folks, and would probably been in his 30s when Bates was writing his seminal work. Good comment man. :-)
Check his chapter in Founding Flies. The way Mike describes Keith, he must have been a wonder kid. Both Oatman and Rube Cross elected to mentor him. His “fishing buddy” list was the who’s who of top fly anglers of the 40’s and 50’s
Been watching your content for a while you have helped me a lot from when I first started tying I would love to learn more from you. Thunder
Thank you William! I appreciate the kind words.
Only tied a few and haven’t fished them yet. Love their looks and looking forward to a little Thunder when I do finally try one. 🙂. Thx Matt.
Same here Clyde! The last few times I've been out I've been having too much fun with dry flies to even think about tying a streamer on. :-)
Thanks for sharing the thunder Creek series. Though I have never tied them I have seen them on smallmouth Waters in lower Michigan several times. Keep up the good work Matt!
Thank you Matt, I'd like to make some of these Thunder flies for some bass by my house . Have a great day Matt.
Thunder Always have room for a new book
Matt! You got me again! ( well I got myself) Thunder Creek, nice storyline. So I get up this am, go to CZcams ( check on fly tying videos) your first one on . I make my coffee, start to watch… I didn’t/couldn’t read your heading. I hadn’t put my glasses on yet!
Still I did enjoy your video and when I win the book , I’ll have to try and tie them .( with glasses)
Thanks Matt, looking forward to seeing your next one.
Hahaha! Great comment Brian. I'm just happy you're watching them my friend. :-)
Thunder Creek is about 65 miles from where I live, looks like a must have!
You should check it out! It sounds like a pretty cool, old, under-fished stream.
I love the Thunder creek Minnow!! I use it regularly
Cool to hear Cody!
That sounds like a awesome book! Thunder series got me curious!!
Would love to add the Thunder book to my collection. Thanks for your videos.
Love streamer fishing.thanks matt.thunder.
Great presentation for the Thunder Creek flies and fishing. Here in Florida, our Tampa Lightning ran out of thunder and we're Avalanched. Keep giving us great book reviews and tying videos,Matt.
Haha. That was a tough loss Ed. Better luck next year my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies The Avalanche outplayed them. Congrats and enjoy the Stanley Cup.
Great review, I’ve never tied a Thunder Creek fly nor fished one. Guess I need to catch up! As always, thank you for the video.
By thunder that's a book that I think every tier should have in their library, including me. Since it worked twice before I'm going to say pick me. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.
Hahaha! Yeah I recall you winning something from Brian's channel not too long ago. :-)
Thanks for another great review. I look forward to tying up some of the Thunder Creek style flies.
Thanks Matt for the review of thunder creek review
You're welcome George!
The Thunder Rolls. 😎 ya know… rolling creek / rolling river.. or something like that.
New patterns! Yay! Caught more fish on streamers than others but I haven’t gotten the fly fishing experience that others have.
Thanks for the review video.
You bet Will! I appreciate the note my friend.
Good stuff Matt . i love the thunder !!
Thanks for the review, Matt.
Thunder
Hey Matt. I'm not entering this contest because I already have the book. And everything you said about it is true and then more. It's a wonderful book and you can learn lot from it. Keep reviewing books Matt if I don't win one I'll buy it. Have a great week and go fishing when you can.
Thanks James, I appreciate this feedback! You never know when someone might be considering this book and see this comment. Good stuff my friend. :-)
Hi Matt, seems a long time ago since I won a nice book from your channel, great that you have so many more subscribers now. Fantastic channel, keep it going and Thunder
Thank you Neil! Yeah, that was a while ago. If I recall, it was that yellow covered Dave Hughes' classic. Man, I need to break that thing out again. :-)
I been buying the books you review and you have been very through on your reviews.
I read them and listen to the thunder and rain that us going on here in Florida!
Ha! I appreciate this note Rick. I hope I haven't led you astray yet. :-)
Thanks for the information regarding this book and the Thunder style. This might be a useful concept for me to adapt to the mix of freshwater and saltwater fishing I pursue.
Hi Matt , seems like a interesting Book , Thunder , thanks
Great video Matt:
Been fishing the Thunder Creek series for a few years now. They do work.
Excellent to hear Lincoln! I haven't actually fished them but they're definitely on my to-do list for the next time I toss some streamers. :-)
I think that the Thunder Creek Flies are cool too. Great Video entertainment, thanks Matt. Some of my earliest ties were bucktail Streamers. I had fun playing with the largemouth bass, with an occasional large crappie thrown in.
Bucktails and bass are a great combo Lee. :-)
Really happy to have found the channel. Interested in Thunder Creek flies.
Welcome John! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
These Thunder Creek flies look great. I'm going to tie some up for my next opportunity to visit the surf
Saltwater Thunder Creek flies... from reading some of these comments they definitely work in the surf. :-)
Production value and quality in your videos keeps going up! Keep up the good work pal.
Thank you Lindsay! I appreciate you stopping by my friend. Someday I may get up there in the league with you but I think it would take me years to learn something like that Snatcher you just did. :-)
@@SavageFlies Not at all pal.
That book sounds interesting and the name Thunder I'll have to check out those fly's Thanks Matt
I have a buddy that recently tried tying some Thunder Creek flies to try on some smallmouth. I believe your recommendation on adding this to my library is a great suggestion.
Cool to hear Darrell! Good luck my friend. :-)
I sure enjoy your videos!
Thunder!
I need to start writing down all of the names of these streams that you mention to put on my fly fishing bucket list. Thunder Creek will have to be on my list. Was just in your neck of the woods but not for fishing. Was doing the DC tourist thing with the wife and grandchildren. I looked up the pond in the park where you floundered in your float tube a few videos back. Looks like we weren't too far away.
Hahaha! Yeah, there really are some under-utilized state parks and forests on the outskirts of DC. Lots of hikers and bikers, but oftentimes I'm the only one floundering around in the ponds. :-)
I have a couple of flies in a box somewhere of these Thunder Creek Style flies. There fun to tie and I think there great baitfish flies for salt water where the river meets the sea.
