  • In this video, we'll show you how to achieve the perfect crack resistant seal between your tile edge and your wall using painters tape and DAP ALEX FLEX Premium Molding and Trim Sealant!
    If you've ever installed tile before, you'll know how difficult it can be to 'end' the tile when it doesn't terminate in a corner. There are many great products designed to 'cap' or provide a finished edge (ie. the sides of a backsplash, or in this case, the top edge of the tile wainscotting), however even when you install a tile edge or or a decorative tile nosing, you're presented a new problem all together: what do you do where the tile edge meets the wall?
    The main issue stems from the fact that anywhere two dissimilar surfaces meet (ie. tile and drywall), there will be a propensity for cracking. How do we prevent this from happening? By applying a flexible, durable sealant that will span the gap between the two surfaces. Now you might assume that silicone (because of its high durability and mould/mildew resistant properties) is a perfect fit here- but there is one major drawback that makes it unsuitable for this application. Silicone can't be painted- and for this reason it should NEVER be used on a wall that is (or could be in the future). Thats why for this situation, we always look to caulking to solve the problem. Caulking has many of the same properties as silicone, but because it is latex, it can be painted!
    In this video, we'll walk you through our process for achieving the perfect crack resistant seal between your tile edge and your wall using painters tape caulking!

    Hi can you tell me if I wasn’t doing mid wall but where my floor tile meets the wall, at it seems to have peeled off and left a line of a hole would,it be the same?I find pushing that caulk out very difficult as I am elderly, is it the same difficulty to push out if I use the silicone tube and will silicone on the floor/wall tile edge be ok? Thanks

    Jolly Tile , Schluter Roundec, Jolly or any other companies edge treatment, bullnose tile are all methods that leave a professional looking finished product.

    Great video. What would you do if it was a cut tile edge facing up and it wasn't the same color all the way through (i.e. cutting large tiles into strips for baseboards)? How do you finish that tile edge so that it disappears?

      Hmm that’s a tricky situation. The best case scenario would be to add a tile edge on top (though that’s easier said than done if the tile is already installed). Your options (outside of a good tile edge) will likely be limited to coloured sealants (silicone that matches the tile or grout) 👍

    Thank you for this helpful video. What silicone do you recommend for tile, corners, floors ect? Shower area as well as bathroom walls.

      Great question! We use DAP Silicone Ultra almost every time. Pro tip* for jobs where you want your silicone to ‘disappear’ look for this product in translucent white (different than ‘white’) and keep a couple of tubes handy. On light coloured tiles its translucent enough not to draw your eye, but has enough white pigment to cover up minor gaps and imperfections👍

      Thank you for the reply. I will be grouting and sealing my bathroom walls, shower etc. pretty soon. I had purchased Latasil by Laticrete because of the color match with their Spectralock 1 grout. The Latisil is 100% silicone. What do you think of this product?

    So we also have a backsplash in the bathroom only 6 inches from the countertop
 but it’s also just a cut edge of tile and we don’t know what to put on top of that cut edge of tile. Is there a certain kind of tile trim and where would I find it?

    • @RefreshHomeImprovements
      @RefreshHomeImprovements  Pƙed rokem

      That’s a difficult scenario if it’s already installed unfortunately. Adding a tile edge after your mortar and grout has dried is difficult to say the least. At this point, you could look into adding a tile trim (small tiles designed to look like trim pieces) on top. If thats not an option, you’d likely be looking at something like a coloured sealant (silicone that matches the tile or grout) to conceal the cut edge 👍

    how did you trim the tile at the top of the shower? did you just take the tile to the ceiling with no trim? 8:04 we get a glimpse of what appears to be no trim, albeit terrible angle to make a proper judgement.
