He continued it for several years and won 4 amateur bouts before joining Nottingham Forrest. Even though he played professionally, he continued to box to release stress. Let’s see… if we stick to those who succeeded both as players and managers, it would include Beckenbauer, Cruyff, Trapattoni, Conte, Ancelotti, Zidane, Deschamps, Guardiola. Cannot think of a goalkeeper or an out and out striker.
Players like Ferdinand and Fletcher needed pep talks from Roy to keep them on their toes as they were very good players, not great players. Ferdinand was error prone and dropped a clanger by missing a drugs test resulting in him being suspended for a season. Fletcher went missing in most of the finals United lost, but always gave 100% even though that meant losing to better opposition. Van der Saar was almost flawless, so I don't understand how Roy thought Edwin needed a pep talk. No one's perfect, eh?
