  • ‪@justflight‬ recently released an MSFS addon of the aircraft on which I started my career as a flying instructor... OBVIOUSLY I was going to give it a go!
    Apologies for the audio during the flight segment, OBS decided to shaft me with its audio channel function, hence the subtitles. Normal service should be resumed next time!

    Just a little correction, LFSN is owned by Liverpool flying school and not Ravenair. I did all my PPL training in a Tomahawk at Liverpool. LFSU actually says above the reg "Liverpool flying school" and not Ravenair, assuming Ravenair have not purchased them from LFS. Both SN & SU verified as Liverpool flying school aircraft by the CAA aircraft register

    The subtitles were actually good as I took notes on the stall & spin sections which you covered really well. Now to practice! Great video on a wonderful aircraft. Thanks a lot.

    Great video, and I, for one, loved the subtitles, as Tended to miss important stuff when the aircraft sounds are too loud. I had the JF PA-38 Tomhawk since launch and never know it had a timer, primer or check list 😂 so you really do learn a lot from a real flight instructor.
    Regards a flight I have gone from Whitewaltham aerodrome, up to Liverpool Airports and back which takes hour and a half each way, or flight around London again another hours and a half round trip. But Tomahawk needed constant attention. But I'm not sure I have the patience to go further than this.

    I watched the whole thing but I always watch your whole videos.
    I think you called it about the pricing. For me, the Arrows and certainly the Comanche, are all the high fidelity, piston singles I need. Plus, I really love piston twins anyway.
    Anxiously waiting for your review of the Duke when it finally comes out. I'm thinking it'll probably be a two hour plus video. 😜

    I was waiting this Tomahawk since long time. Number one on my wishlist even if there are very few remaining in Europe. The last flying here in Switzerland crashed on take off about seven years ago. Many more remakning in NZ and UK. JF, as usual, has made a fantastic paintkit and I will do my favoured livery quite easily.

      @@FlyFromHome both had advantages and disadvantages. The Cessna was easier to trim and fly. I know that because my flight instructor shut the fuel off at about two thousand feet. The engine quit and when I looked at him he said “don’t look at me go through the emergency procedures and restart the engine.” He was a hands on kind of guy. I loved the Tomahawk because I thought if you could master it you got a pretty good education on the basics.

    Great video. Agree completely on the price. That said, I bought it anyway for nostalgia as I learned to fly in one irl. At the time it seemed exotic with its low wing and T tail, compared to the cessna 150s the competing flying school had 😂

    Interesting you mention unstable. I did one flying lesson, it was one of these at my local windy Wellington international Airport in NZ. Now it was rather windy, but it was such a wild beast to handle as we flew over the hills into the city from the south it scared the crap out of me and I asked the instructor to take control. Kinda put me off

    • @antonioiozzi9171
      @antonioiozzi9171 Před 3 měsíci

      Wellington is known for its strong wind. Learning to fly in such condition during school is very useful, because then when you will fly solo you know that is not that terrible. I am a glider pilot and on my airport we have sometimes the Phöen, a very strong northern warm wind coming from the Alps.

      @FlyFromHome  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah that’s a story I’ve heard repeated many times where the Tomahawk is concerned. Hope you weren’t put off learning to fly!

    Sporty! It’s a simulation, exactly where you should enjoy some sportiness without endangering yourself. I’m going to buy it. Crosswind landings in this plane… wing low, or crab-n-kick? p.s. I love trains too.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  Před 5 dny +1

      Oh yes, rather less consequences for hitting the ground in a desktop sim! You can use either method, though I always taught crabbing and kicking as the main crosswind technique since I found students picked it up more easily.

    • @patrickunderwood5662
      @patrickunderwood5662 Před 4 dny +1

      @@FlyFromHome Yes I found it completely natural from the beginning, but it seems to have gone out of favor, officially.

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  Před 3 dny

      That’s strange, because it’s still the method used to land most swept wing jet transport aircraft and many others too! I used to make sure students had an understanding of both methods but they always seemed to prefer crabbing it in.

    I was really looking forward to this plane, first one I ever flew IRL. However, I am on Xbox and after purchase I immediately got it refunded as it doesn’t run smoothly on console at all. Heavy frame loss, black avionics and just like a slide show in use. I think it’s due to the heavy use of 8k textures throughout, such a shame and I wish they had included 4K models for the console release

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That’s disappointing! Hopefully they fix that for console players.

      I’m on the Xbox series X and having none of those problems with the Tomahawk, so I assume you are on the S. (Sorry to hear that). I am though having ABOs and inability to mount the EFB with the new C414AW Chancellor at many airports. Maybe try cutting back on the settings.

    • @alanharris2799
      @alanharris2799 Před 3 měsíci

      @@flybeeson7950 I’m on series X too, and as you know we can’t really adjust much. I’ve also had some issues with the 414 but it is usually OK with EFB and black screens at heavy airports.
      For the PA38 I loaded in at the default Shoreham, and it was basically a slide show for a bit, then it got smoother for a bit. Then on take off it was just unusable. I do run the seafront simulations south east boats addon but this doesn’t cause issues with other aircraft. I usually use Shoreham for new aircraft as it’s so basic. I even tried rebooting the console but the same effect so I requested a refund and uninstalled it.
      Strange you have no issues, but then that is MSFS on console, some people have never had a crash to the Home Screen or black avionics, others get them all the time..

    • @flybeeson7950
      @flybeeson7950 Před 3 měsíci

      @@alanharris2799 Yes, it is strange that we are both on Series X and yet have different problems with different aircraft. I don't know much about this issue technically. I usually just watch CZcams videos and get advice from them and I also find that Discord is useful. If you like we could exchange information via email on our respective settings and add-ons to try and see which ones might be making a difference wrt memory problems e.g. CTDs, avionics blackouts and stutters. I've got quite a lot of information on spreadsheets.
      I tried flying from Shoreham to Goodwood EGHR (Burning BD) and back in the Tomahawk this afternoon and it was fine, just a few slight stutters taking off from Goodwood. On the other hand I'm still having problems with the C414. I tried flying from Shoreham to Goodwood in a GNS530 livery and the GPS course didn't load into the GNS (or VFR Map), also the EFB wouldn't mount. I then tried Salcombe EGZY (my local very basic airport) to Shoreham and everything worked fine. Same with Salcombe to Goodwood. We may have other planes in common in our hangars, so if there is anything you would like me to test out I'd be happy to do so.

      @@alanharris2799 Yes, it is strange that people on the Series X have different problems with different planes. I tried flying from
      Shoreham to Goodwood (EGHR) [by Burning BD] and back yesterday in the Tomahawk and had no issues apart from slight stutters when taking off from Goodwood. On the other hand I did have problems again with the C414. I tried to fly from Shoreham to Goodwood first (in one of the GNS530 liveries) but when I spawned in from the World Map the GPS course had not transferred to the Garmin (or VFR Map) - just got a black screen, and I also could not mount the EFB. I then tried my local airport Salcombe (EGZY) [which is even more basic than Shoreham] to Shoreham with no such problems. Also I had no problems with Salcombe to Goodwood, but when I tried Shoreham to Goodwood the power button on the EFB did not work.
      I was wondering if you would like to exchange information via email on our MSFS settings and add-ons to see if we can work out possible ways to avoid CTDs, stutters and avionics blackouts etc.? I am no expert on the subject and so far I have just been guided by videos on CZcams plus information on Discord. I have several of the high spec GA aircraft in my hangar and would be happy to run tests my system.
