Been on carnivore for 8 months now. For some reason my eyesight improved and my current glasses are too strong. I have lost weight but still have left side pulse noise in my ear. Mental clarity improved. I was paralyzed through a spinal injury and the carnivore along with weight lifting is helping to restore some of my muscles and nerves.

A prolonged water fasting could help further. Or a fasting mimicking diet for couple for weeks. Tinnitus is related to damage cells/mitochondria/capillaries/nerve endings. A fasting induced autofagy not only clears damaged mitochondria from cells or outright destroys damaged cells, but the following period you experience an massive increase in growth hormones and stem cells that further repair the damages to cells, capillaries and nerve endings. Wont cure outright the problem(at least not immediately) but i believe you going to see great improvement. Either way, what do you have to lose?

I think carb cycling in rhythm with the seasons and your geographical environment is optimal for most. You can argue so many ways about carbs being essential or non-essential but the truth is it really just depends. If you’re from Canada and it’s January, does it really make sense to eat tropical fruits and honey? Maybe if you live in Costa Rica. Everyone’s situation is different and a one size fits all approach of eating fruit year round doesn’t make sense. Local and seasonal eating is the way to go.

Yo Paul, your book carnivore code is coming in the mail today. Im on day 4 of meat, organs, dairy, fruit and honey, truly feel a difference already, i feel way way less stressed, less anxiety, more satiated, calmer. Everyday at noon i cant wait to eat that big bite of liver. And at my second meal i have a little goat heart and kidney, the goat heart is eons better than a steak. Its been fun and exciting getting on a good eating path. What ive cut out is a lot of gluten, pizza, pasta, bread, cut out veggies, ate lots of veggies every day with meat, entire body was badly inflamed and stressed. And cut out junky snacks chips, ice cream and chocolate. These last four days my first meal has been ground beef with heritage eggs and melted cheese, some greek yogurt on the side, and 1oz of beef liver, banana, raw honey. Second meal is ground beef creamed with sour cream and a little cream cheese, yellow squash, avocado, and little side of cottage cheese, little goat heart and kidney. Any snacks just apples, bananas, or a lil squirt of honey, or warm glass of bone broth. Already created my second weeks meal plan and shopped this morning. Average $75-80 dollars for each week now. Feels awesome man, thank you. Cant wait to start reading the book later. Me and my fiance just went down such a rocky path with eating. She was a vegan for 7 years, i met her and she got me to go vegan i lasted a year, i went from 175 looking normal and healthy to 130, all my bones showing, weak as hell and my cheeks sunk in, and just slept all day. She moved in and in a month i had us back on steak and eggs haha. And helped her heal layers and layers of health issues. Once we were healthy again we just started eating junk and having fun with food which equally led down a bad path. Went from 130lb vegan back to 170lb normal, now 195, big pot belly, lazy, bad posture, inflamation, stress. 4 days in. And not stopping. No more gluten. No more trash. Lifes worth more than that bullshit.

I’m totally mixed on this topic. On zero carb carnivore I have insane energy and mental clarity, and exponentially better workouts, but I do get the sleep disturbances occasionally. Although I feel so great that even with the sleep disturbances I still operate at 80-90%. This came in handy when I had my first child haha.
If I add in carbs my sleep improves greatly but then I get major brain fog and far less energy for workouts.
I’ve tried to find a middle ground by adding in a few carbs around intense workouts but it’s very hard to find the sweet spot.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Could it be the timing of your carbs or even the source? Do you workout fasted? Also you can email heart & soil and they are incredible about answering questions. Very knowledgeable. I feel like I’ve asked them a hundred questions my self. When you add in carbs do you keep your fat the same or do you lower your fats? I think one of the problems people have when adding carbs back and their energy tanks is because you have switched from using ketones to using glucose. If you train heavy and don’t get enough glucose then you will train poorly. Are you upping your carbs enough before workouts? There’s probably a sweet spot for everyone with carbs and being flexible is the ultimate goal I think. From a biological point of view we are built to bounce back and forth when needed. This also keeps us insulin sensitive. You can become insulin resistant when you never have carbs. Being flexible is ideal. Maybe experiment with your macros. Add a good amount of carbs on training days and less on non training days. Good luck man!

John Yudkin was born in 1910, in the East End of London. His parents were Russian Jews who settled in England after fleeing the pogroms of 1905. Yudkin’s father died when he was six, and his mother brought up her five sons in poverty. By way of a scholarship to a local grammar school in Hackney, Yudkin made it to Cambridge. He studied biochemistry and physiology, before taking up medicine. After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the second world war, Yudkin was made a professor at Queen Elizabeth College in London, where he built a department of nutrition science with an international reputation.
John Yudkin had sounded the alarm on sugar back in 1972, in a book called Pure, White, and Deadly. When Yudkin looked at the data on heart disease, he was struck by its correlation with the consumption of sugar, not fat. He carried out a series of laboratory experiments on animals and humans, and observed, as others had before him, that sugar is processed in the liver, where it turns to fat, before entering the bloodstream.
He noted, too, that while humans have always been carnivorous, carbohydrates only became a major component of their diet 10,000 years ago, with the advent of mass agriculture. Sugar - a pure carbohydrate, with all fibre and nutrition stripped out - has been part of western diets for just 300 years; in evolutionary terms, it is as if we have, just this second, taken our first dose of it. Saturated fats, by contrast, are so intimately bound up with our evolution that they are abundantly present in breast milk. To Yudkin’s thinking, it seemed more likely to be the recent innovation, rather than the prehistoric staple, making us sick.
“If only a small fraction of what we know about the effects of sugar were to be revealed in relation to any other material used as a food additive,” Yudkin wrote in his book, “that material would promptly be banned.” His book did well, but Yudkin paid a high price for it. Prominent nutritionists like Ancel Keys combined with the food industry to destroy his reputation, and his career never recovered. He died, in 1995, a disappointed, largely forgotten man.

A food elimination diet such as carnivore in the beginning is a good place to start as it gives your digestion a rest and kills off bacteria overgrowth such as SIBO. After a few weeks or months, you can then start introducing one food at a time and see if you get bloated or suffer any inflammation. And now we are back to a balanced diet of meat, fruit and veg.

Prior to the Agricultural Revolution, modern humans would have never eaten a significant amount of carbohydrates. A diet where 30% of calories came from carbohydrates would be the upper end of even the most aggressive estimates. Thus modern human physiology and biochemistry evolved in and from this “low” carbohydrate, low glycemic, low insulin environment.
The default diet of modern humans in the wild was a low carbohydrate diet.
If we look at what the world eats now we can see carbohydrates dominate. But perhaps surprisingly there are just four “foods” that contribute to the majority of carbohydrate consumption: wheat, corn, rice, and sugar.
Wheat, corn, rice and grains are thought of as ancient foods, daily staples since the beginning of human existence. But if you put all of human existence (since Homo habilis~3 million years ago) on a 24 hour clock, they didn’t become any significant part of the human diet until 5 minutes ago.
For 23 hours and 55 minutes, humans didn’t eat wheat, corn, rice and grains. Besides requiring agricultural techniques to consume in any meaningful way, they are laced with plant toxins and antinutrients to prevent herbivores (and humans) from eating the plant’s offspring (the seeds).
However, 5 minutes ago we took these plant seeds and made them a significant part of the human diet by artificially breeding and selecting for size and abundance.
Then in the last second, during the Industrial Revolution, we began refining them, thereby further concentrating carbohydrates and their prepackaged toxins.
In this last split-second we altered them even further. We began genetically modifying them. Now about 90% of major crops are GMO.
We’ve engineered new traits into plants that wouldn’t otherwise naturally occur. We’ve engineered higher lectin loads to deter insects. We began spraying them with pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides.
We’ve added preservatives, so we can store and ship these foods around the world.
And all of these changes came with a heavy price:
    - We know sugar - and thus carbs - are addicting.
    - We know that carbohydrates are a nonessential nutrient.
    - It’s clear that simple sugars, fructose, and refined carbohydrates dysregulate our hormones and appetites, lead to overeating and obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, and are implicit in the most deadly diseases today including heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

The staple food of North American Plains Indians was the bison and they ate virtually the entire carcass. The Plains Indians consumed high amounts of animal food on average (76-85%). A man requiring 3000 daily kilocalories consuming one pound of bison meat (26 % of his daily energy expenditure) would obtain 134 grams of high quality animal protein and 23 mg of zinc, exceeding the DRI for zinc by 8 mg. Eating one and a half pounds of bison meat (40.1 % of daily energy requirements) he would achieve 201 grams of protein, 34 mg of zinc (more than twice the DRI). @@beautifulgirl219 I guess you don't know what the gatherer part of hunter gatherer meant? Farming isn't a modern invention. Here it is from Wikipedia if you don't believe me. Plains Indians or Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies are the Native American tribes and First Nation band governments who have historically lived on the Interior Plains (the Great Plains and Canadian Prairies) of North America. While hunting-farming cultures have lived on the Great Plains for centuries prior to European contact, the region is known for the horse cultures that flourished from the 17th century through the late 19th century. Their historic nomadism and armed resistance to domination by the government and military forces of Canada and the United States have made the Plains Indian culture groups an archetype in literature and art for Native Americans everywhere. Then there were the domesticated crops and wild foods. While there were many nomadic tribes that thrived on hunting and gathering, many others became advanced farmers, developing special techniques like irrigation, terracing, and crop rotation to have enough food to survive through winter. Farming in unison with gathering - from simple berry picking to more complicated processes like tapping trees for maple syrup - provided these indigenous people with a variety of healthy sources of food.
Important crops and wild foods included pumpkins, wild rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, eggs, honey, a variety of nuts, cranberries, strawberries, wild plums, roots, greens, and a huge variety of other fruits and vegetables.

@@JoeS97756 You my friend are misinformed. WILD foods in the central plains have a relatively brief growing season and a much shorter ripeness season of around a month. When the U.S. government finally subdued the Native Americans it was primarily from a single tactic--hunting into non-existence its nearly sole food source--the American Bison. That is fact. They didn't need to search out the negligible supply of wild berries for a brief period, there were no vast fields of pumpkins tended by natives, honey & maple syrup is pure sugar, not a nutrient, & if you believe wild roots and wild plums made up more than an incidental supplement, essentially a garnish, to a diet of animal protein and animal fat, you are flatly uninformed. The .1% of the world's wild edible plants that are consumed are historically consumed during famines and food shortages. The potato wasn't grown in Europe until 1600, in the U.S. it was 1720 when Irish immigrants brought it over. The idea that the plains indians had a long cultural history of widespread, persistent, dietarily essential agriculture, is untrue.

Won't your blood glucose lower, regardless of diet, if you lose weight when starting at obese? Also, they're getting fat when they lose weight. They're body uses the fat they've been holding onto. What was their blood glucose level compared to others or compared to a low carb/carnivore after they lost weight a few years later?
As someone who lost weight. I went from 320 to now 130 (5'3), I tried three methods. I started with Keto. It was extremely easy. I got down to 200 in a year. Then I dropped another 20lbs in the next few months after that. I got blood work done and it was far better than when I was at 320 as you can imagine. Everything. At 185, I stayed there for a bit by deciding to take a break and eat "healthy" with carbs. I found myself getting depressed again, and when I decided to lose weight again, I didn't go keto and it was extremely hard. I couldn't get back on track. I then decided to go on an extremely low calorie diet to shed as much as I could in a 3 month time.
In those 3 months I ate what I wanted but limited my calories to 700-1200. I did eat rice, sweet potatoes, chicken etc. I did lose the weight because it's low calorie. I got to 165 in 3 months. I felt awful. I got my blood work done and all was good. But I had a skin infection arise that I never had. I was extremely depressed, anxious, tired. I mean all the symptoms that come with being malnourished, but my lab work was still "good". I went off of it and decided to try carnivore. I still lost weight, but far more quickly. I finished the last 20lbs in just 2 months and another 10 over the next 2 months. I was feeling great. My lab work is far better than at any point. Even my blood work is amazing.
I got pregnant in Oct-Nov and listened to doctors and added "healthy" carbs back in. I added berries all organic as I could, tomatoes, avocados, and peppers were the only vegetables. Then I added some grains like rice. I added these slowly. I ended up having a miscarriage. I don't think it was due to anything I ate but I will say, I gained 10lbs extremely quickly and I really wasn't eating that much. When I was taking it slowly, I saw no real difference in mood or weight with berries, tomatoes, avocados, peppers. I only saw a difference when I added rice and pasta. My blood work was fine.
3 weeks later, I had my blood work taken multiple times and during this the less grains I ate, even though my blood work was fine throughout, it got better. I'm in the process of losing those 10lbs I gained during the pregnancy/miscarriage. I can't eat any carbs including fruit without gaining weight. Milk I can have a glass in the morning but any mid day or night, I gain weight the next day. Even if all I change is the one glass of milk at differing times.
I'm having my blood work again next week and I know it will be better than at any point because I've stuck with carnivore. I will say that I don't think fruit or honey or dairy if you can handle it is bad. I've seen no difference on blood work or mood. I don't even see a difference in weight as long as I'm not trying to lose weight. For example if I'm 130, eating high fat, add fruit, honey, or milk, I stay at 130. However, any other carbs and I'm doomed. I plan to add fruit and honey back in once I get to my goal weight.
My point is I don't think the answer is so obvious and I don't know if that study is the full picture. Also want to point out that I quit smoking as well around the 185 range, and recently before my pregnancy quit coffee (that made a world of difference as well). Then I took up drinking coffee again after the miscarriage, but then quit again and I haven't had a cup since. That improved my sleep more than anything.

I was doing alright on low carb, for a long time, decades ago. I still needed caffeine to prop myself up, but I could sleep, workout, etc.
Once perimenopause hit, everything changed. Now without ample carbs I face insomnia, hot flashes, fatigue, sluggish digestion, just feel terrible. With adequate carbs, all of that stops, all the usual menopause woes. I won't do HRT or take drugs to cope so I had to experiment with diet and lifestyle to manage this drastic change. Even workouts have had to change, a lot.

You don't need to eat carbs. Your liver will make ketones which serve as fuel by breaking down fat in the absence of carbs when your body doesn't have enough sugar to run on. FYI, adding more salt to your diet will eliminate the cramps you'll experience when eating a carnivore diet. I make my own salt capsules and take two once a day. It has eliminated the cramping.

The body can store up to 150g of carbs in the form of glycogen in the liver alone not including what gets stored in muscle tissue. We use up most of our stored glycogen from the liver in one night of sleep. It would make sense to me to at the very least replenish that the following day if you arent active. Obviously the body can convert protein to glucose but you likely wouldnt able to convert enough to replenish what your body uses on a daily basis especially if youre active. Its no wonder lack of carbohydrate could cause sleep disturbances. Unless youre in ketosis every cell in the body is using carbohydrate whether youre actively consuming carbs or not. The brain especially requires alot of carbohydrate.

I like Paul a lot but am not sold on everything he says. You have to remember that he's very active, lifts weights and is extremely physically fit. He's does not have a "normal" family with 3 kids/commuting to work every day/family dinners weeknights/running to kid's activities etc. type of life. I'm mostly carnivorous (eggs, beef, fish, chicken, venison), eat some small pieces of fruit and a half of sweet potato (with farm fresh real butter!!), and perhaps some arugula with olive oil and parmigiano reggiano and fermented veggies on a daily basis. I do cheat every now and have something sweet or organic egg noodles with cream sauce, but that is the exception, not the rule. I'm 50 this year and feeling wonderful. Blood pressure is consistently in the 117/75 range and resting heartbeat is 55. I think we just need to remember to limit/eliminate most sugar from your diet and to exercise (walking 30 minutes a day), reduce seed oils. Don't beat yourself up if you have a small sliver of cake or cookie from time to time and try to fast every so often if you can. Of course, if you are more active, you likely can indulge in more fruit and honey.

I had all those issues as well. Been on and off keto and carnivore over the past 15 years. It's weird but the longer I stay in ketosis the worse I feel, even with all the knowledge i've gained it seems keto does me worse now than ever. Zero carb carnivore nowadays causes electrolyte imbalances within a week, if I do 50 grams a day on keto it'll take a month, at around 100 grams of carbs a day I feel much better. The problem is that my skin is worse with the carbs...always a catch 22 with diet. My eyes are also really dry on zero carb, although my inflammation is non existent. The amount of electrolytes I was supplementing was absurd, I remember when i initially did keto in 2008 with no real online community to get info from and I did fantastic with 0 electrolyte supps. So I tried 0 supps again and that didn't work nowadays, keto/low carb can be tricky, i gotta accept that doesn't work as well as it used to for me...which sucks because my skin is so much better in ketosis.

What are humans designed to eat? Here are 2 hints:
1st hint: For several decades now healthcare has told us to cut down on fats, especially saturated fats, avoid red meat, eat a diet consisting of whole grains and starches, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
Since we have followed these recommendations obesity, diabetes and a host of other diseases and chronic illness have exploded.
2nd hint: Our brains exploded. I’ll explain.
2.5 million years ago and earlier hominid fossils show that our cranial cavities remain fairly constant in size. But 2.5 million years ago our brains begain to explode in size. Growing to 4 times their ancestors size. So what happened 2.5 million years ago?
About 2.5 million years ago the world cooled down and the series of ice ages began which lasted until roughly 10k years ago. So for 2.5M years even places close the equator would have had a climate similar to that of Greenland today.
With long cold winters and short cool summers, there would have been very few plant foods for much of the year. It was inevitable that animals like reindeer, bears, rhino, mammoths had to become our prominent food source.
Ice Age animals tended to be fat, and their fat provided both insulation against the cold and energy reserves. It was this fat that humans ate that built our brains.
Animal fat is a source of ready-made long-chain fatty acids, including 20 and 22 carbon chain fatty acids like AA, DTA, EPA, DHA essential for brain development and found only in animal foods.
The longest chain in vegetable oils - linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) are 18 carbon fatty acids. Humans, just like all mammals can chain elongate and desaturate these to produce the longer chain fatty acids but we’re very inefficient at it.
By eating meat, we fed the brain with preformed 20 and 22 carbon fatty acids. We no longer had to endogenously synthesize these fats from the 18 carbon plant fatty acids. Our brain growth could never have happened without these fats.
Now for the scary part of the story.
10k years ago we invented agriculture at the end of the last ice age. We traded our high-energy, fat-rich foods of animal origin for grains which became our staple food.
In the last 10k years, which is basically overnight in terms of our evolutionary history, our brain has shrunk well over 10%.
I’ll let you decide what you think we are designed to eat.
Sometimes the evidence isn’t right in front of our eyes - but right behind them.

There are 2 ways to lower insulin low carb or low energy, if somebody thinks that eating only rice and fruits and under 1000 kcals a day, for which Kempner was beating up his patients to continue the diet go ahead. Main problem of Paul is he becomes overly dogmatic for which diet he follows at a specific point in time, before it was meat and organs (he couldnt handle even dairy due to his eczema breakout). Now it is all about fruits honey dairy as primary (lets be honest he eats more sugar/fruit/honey then meat).
The cherry picking science is also great, I guess the science and clinical trials showing that keto is putting into remission or at least improving diabetes, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar etc does not matter I guess and we can just disregard it. If Paul was so open-minded as he says he is, he would not bash something that is helping and has helped a ton of people, that does not mean that everybody should follow it but you should be open to the possibility that it is helping many people. It is no wonder that he is not debating or at least inviting someone who is doing low carb/keto/carnivore long term and/or knowledgable people such as Anthony Chaffee (20 years), Robert Sikes (7 years) and many others I could mention. But dont worry Paul, evidence will continue to come out in favor of the ketogenic diet, many trials on their way especially on bipolar and depression.
