Do you cycle with or without data? 👩🏻💻
I'm no racer, but it's incredibly motivating to see my every ride recorded by Strava
No, but check Strava.
How to measure performance..
you ride the same route every day.. and see how fast you can be.. sometimes I measured heart rates.. but it's completely pointless if you're trying to do your best.. zone 2 is made for endurance athletes..
An interviewer asked Usain Bolt.. what is your 800m time.. Usain replied.. I have never run 800m in my life 🤔
A power meter would be a really great thing.. but that doesn't help me to know what I can do either.. it only helps that I can be a little lazy 😁
Life without Strava is better 🎉
I already had a bike computer when I started racing in 1989 and started using a heart rate monitor in 1991. Before 1989 there was a short period of new bike ownership and before that was just playing on a BMX without a computer (although we did have a BBC 'B' Microcomputer 32k indoors for if it was raining)
Who else is watching this when they already have a power meter, heart rate monitor and a bike computer?
Content so good just can't help yourself 😉
Is there any other way 😅
Nailed it! But we are who we are.
No power meter here
I do have all three but like to just look into the data afterwards.
On a long training week it really helped to pace my uphill efforts... first day rest of the team is gone, i stayed at 250W... last day i still stayed at 250W at the climb and was in the first half of the pack😅
I use my internal pain meter :)
Ouch! How high does it go? 🥵
👍
It goes up to V of course!@@gcn
@@gcn it goes to 11, of course!
I have one of those too!
I have Strava on my phone and that's it for my outside rides. During the winter, I ride on an indoor stationary bike with all the data to GCN training videos. When I'm outside, I just enjoy my rides (and ride as hard and fast as I want), but inside, I focus more on the numbers and structured training
With, but it's definitely nice to get off the hills and just ride around a nice flat lake once in a while to soak in the beauty and just enjoy the day
Variation is the spice of life🙌
Basic heart rate monitor. Old school training, no watts! We trained with hr monitor in the 80's.
You can't beat the classics 👌
My Garmin head unit quit one autumn years ago and i did the last few rides without any data. What a freeing experience! I always try now to do a few end of season rides just for fun and not for training.
That's what we call making good out of a bad situation 🙌
I am big on distance. My goal is be able to go 200+ miles in less than than a day. Still working on it but feel that it is achievable. Great videos!
Wow that's going to be an epic day out! Your first 200 miles is a real big miles stone 🙌 Did you check out Ollie and Conors attempt? 👉czcams.com/video/31QXfnmAhgo/video.html
Data is like a newspaper, it's not really interesting to read an old one. I never/rarely look back on old data. It's nice to see the data after the training.
A really useful addition to ANY data is keeping track of how you feel, i.e. your Rating of Perceived Exertion. This can be a lifesaver if you are too reliant on your power and/or HR numbers and you have a technical issue with your gadgets during a training session or race. It can also let you know when you are having a good day (maybe push the numbers a bit) or a bad day (maybe back it off, or check if you've been getting enough recovery lately).
I like blanking the display or covering it and then trying to guess my HR, speed, watts or whatever. It's a good way to equate your output with how you feel.
I do some workouts on Zwift with RPE, and it really works good for me!
Great video Connor, and I'm in love with that tarmac.👍 But oh dear, at about 55secs into the video, that nearside seatstay looks seriously close to that wall.😭
Conor had it all under control. Or so he says!
😂
Interesting. I really prefer when you stay seriously for bit like in this video. Then things get more interesting. Bravo!
I started with a Huret belt drive mile counter. A good basic computer ( speed, mileage, time) is plenty for us non racers.
As an amateur, there’s only one data point that really matters: how much fun did you have?!
Oh yeah! we can get behind that! 🤜
In training for the Tour of Bristol Charity ride.
Good information
I am new to Road bike rides.
Not a text person so a good video.
Plus I am Type two Diabetes so no sugar for fueling rides.
Basic Garmin watch ,heart beats and speed for me it's enough, i'm an old man, almost 69 !
Used to have an HRM when I rode a mountain bike as a teenager. These days I'm just on a commuter bike, but never got around to fitting the very basic computer I bought to monitor cadence.
I don’t earn much due to working part time because of disability. Having tech beyond tracking distance with kamoot is not even a vague option, cycling is already expensive enough without that added cost. I hope that others understand that we might not all be able to join in these convos about HR and cadence and watts. I’ll just go on what I enjoy and m6 body feels able to do
GREAT INFO
Conor, you have no heart without data!
😂
O.k., a bit more serious:
Indoor I have full access to all data at the KICKRbike and Zwift, and I use it for workouts, training rides, fitness tests etc.
On my gravelbike I don't have a power meter or heartrate monitor, just my Garmin computer. With the head unit and the Connect-App I have my riding diary. In front of my house starts my 10k "training range" with much of climbing to bring the indoor effort outside.
That's enough - outdoor just enjoy pedaling, scenery, sunshine, views, longer tours, exploring new landscapes or towns and of course coffee stops!
I like to occasionally test myself on local Strava segments, especially climbs.
I may use a Garmin computer( about several generations old), to record data like heart rate, cadence, time , distance, speed etc. But actually I do look at the computer during the ride every now and then and again. But I more or less ride on feel, if I feeling tired or sore, ride an easier gear. In the age of computers, Although Garmin uploads to Garmin Connect, I also manually record some of the data in an excel spreadsheet, which I also include small notes on how I felt , route etc.
Love this
Data...how much do you need? - depends on how serious you are. Start with the basics - Speed/Distance/Time - Regarding intensity, it's all about the terrain and how you want to ride it. Simple.
I've never used a power meter or app, not to say that those things aren't helpful but they just weren't available when I started racing. I don't think there is any substitute for tuning into your body day-to-day by dialing in your RPE, even with modern data sensors. The combination of both subjective and objective training is probably the best but they are not substitutes for each other.
Oh, Els Angels road looks brand new ! Time to go back to Girona 😊. (Hope they do the same at Rocacorba !)
Would be about time
Mare de deu del mont is better road wise tho
Well i used to ride 150€ 1speed city bike for long time. I think it was pretty effective training because when going uphill you needed alot of strength. 😀
I just use my Apple Watch. As long as you’re out doing something you’re winning, not all of us need to obsess over data.
Outside is winning🙌 We love to hear it!
I do miss my dura ace pedals. Had to switch to 105 for the Assioma duo shi.
Finally, a video for ME !😂
I'm perfectly happy to ride data free. Even on group rides I only use a HRM and my watch.
I didn't always have as much data. Some tools like head unit and power meter can be money you're not ready to spend. But phone app alone or phone app plus heart rate should be pretty achievable for most
Please tell me Connor's bike's seat stays are not leaning against the wall at 0'40"!
I'm still miffed that (most) cycling computers went wireless, becoming more expensive and have to pay more just to get one with a cadence sensor.
Are you still rocking an old school computer? 💻
@@gcn Managed to get the last Cateye Strada Cadence (new in box too) , perhaps in the whole country.
I guess if it's "old school" that automatically makes me cooler lol
There are Chinese bike computers, that support GPS logging and plethora of sensors for like 30$. For 50 you can get even one with maps.
Granted, you won't have the Garmin app/system, but it does the job for me. For the navigation bike computer and 3 sensors (SPD, CAD, HR) less than 100$ - that's pretty affordable, I'd say 😊
@@dtsybulskyi I'm aware, plenty of those in my county (Philippines).
I'm not after GPS features and the like since I already use Strava or komoot together (because we all carry our phones with us anyway) with my "basic" bike comp.
Casio watch stopwatch old school tech I use
Great timing, my heart rate strap has stopped working yesterday evening. Eats a battery in about 30min and doesn‘t connect any more.
If it’s a Wahoo they are pretty good replacing a broken unit if it is relatively new.
@@adamm7001 Unfortunately it‘s a Polar and it lasted about 5 years with almost daily use in the last 3. I don‘t blame them, maybe I should have replaced the o-ring at the battery door at some point.
Connor’s got a playing card in his spokes again 😂
It sounds like you're using a garden tractor for your camera vehicle 😁
I use data when I’m on Zwift. Out on the road, I just ride.
I know you may find this shocking but there are actually cyclist who don't worry about personal performance well at least not high performance, tech and high tech equipment they just ride for the enjoyment of it.
My performance goals ,leave in time to have enough time to get to work without killing myself. 🤣
The majority of cyclists aren't performance driven......Problem is the media/industry thinks they are......
#PartyPace #SlowCycling
I use kitchen timer, I set it to 60min and off we go.
Hahahah is this for indoor cycling? 👀
Best way to save is just to make your own sports drinks. Sugar and water, thats what you pay for in expensive drinks or gels. Usually better for you teeth too.
I can’t understand people who still don’t use a powermeter. They are relatively cheap and can easily result in the biggest performance gains.
I don’t race so I’ve never cared for my riding data. Never used power meter, speedometer, heart rate monitor, Garmin and Strava. Just me and my bike.
Getting healthy in an enjoyable way is my purpose, so I don’t need any of these numbers.
It’s not the bike you’re riding. It’s the rider who riding the bike that does the riding. (Can you possibly use that in a video one day)
Try saying that 10x faster.... Hank 👀
I love this saying. The night before my last sportive I was speaking to a couple at the pub and we were talking about bikes and I said this 😂
All I use at the moment is my smart phone and Strava.
I’m riding a charity ride in July. 350 miles in 3.5 days. I’ve never ridden a century or anything close. Is seat time more important than using training data?
Surprisingly yes. Sure being physically capable is important but being on a bike is just as important
Yes. Easy hours gradually extended will get you there. If it is a big group sit in, stay in the wheels and conserve energy. Good luck on the event.
Like we all used to, back in the Good Old Days (™) .
Old school no more than mph, max speed and average speed, distance, no body data on the bike don't need it i have a sensory perception built right into my body it's called paying attention to my body. What, ya think we were just cave man before "on board data" haha "whippersnapper "
Alright " slim" my man good job mate do keepemcoming
Great to hear you're enjoying some data on your rides 🙌
What type of little motorcycle does the camera man ride?
How to train without expensive tech: get on your bike & ride it. It’s that simple.
where was this filmed ?
Girona-Els Angels
The only data I use is distance, speed and time.
Without. I push the pedals, data does F all
People who have got into the hobby in the last 10years may not have much practice riding by feel. Us dinosaurs had no option in ye olde days.
I absolutely reject data, its of no interest to me. I understand that pro riders need to analyse stuff to guide progress but all I want to do is enjoy the ride, and see the views, I know when I'm not on my game when the café stop has run out of the good cakes. Great vid though...
What is the go to cake at the café?
Carrot cake every time...
@@eshowe66Everyone knows that carrot cake classifies as a vegetable!!!
I'd give up my iPhone before I give back my Wahoo Elmnt Bolt.
Please consult your doctor before testing your limits to make sure you don’t have any underlying issues.
Don't need Strava Google n Apple will both stalk your rides for free well free ish
around 1 min: what are you doing to your nice bike?! ^^
Why have you leaned your bike up against the wall like that 🫨
"How to train without expensive tech."
Don't buy it. 😎🧠
Constant pedal pressure as hard as you can, while nose breathing or holding a conversation. This requires pedaling like hell downhill and going walking pace up steep hills! Also don't eat anything before or during. 👍
Not eating before or during literally just means you won't be able to push yourself as hard physically because you don't have the most amount of energy available for your intense exercise. It's more of a stop block in intense training than anything else. Fasted training has its benefits, but if you're looking to go hard, you're just not gonna be as effective, simple as.
@@madshansen1118 read again. I said while nose breathing or holding a conversation. This should be the majority or your training AND can be done without data, which is what the video is about and why I commented.
Impossible
No Strava is better 🎉
First thing to do to ride without data. Start collecting data 🤦🏻♂️
Just ride faster smh
ur stem is too short
